Driving in Iceland // 10 Things to Know

Driving in Iceland was such a pleasure, because the Ring Road is full of waterfalls, mountain ranges, fjords, and other stunning scenery.
That said, there are a lot of things I wish I'd known before renting a car!
You can check out my complete guide at:

Here's a breakdown:
1. Only a few rental car companies have service right at the airport. For many, you'll have to wait for a shuttle to pick you up to go to their off-site location.
2. Bring a debit card with a pin for gas, since many gas stations don't take credit cards. Also, be sure to put a travel alert on your card to make sure it works.
3. Signage is good on the Ring Road,
4. The Ring Road is paved nicely, and has very little traffic.
5. Watch out for farm animals and wildlife.
6. Bridges narrow to one lane on the Ring Road.
7. Be prepared for snow on mountain passes most months of the year.
8. Use Road.is for road conditions any time of year.
9. The speed limit tops out at 90 km per hour.
10. We only saw one person pulled over by police, but watch for photo radar traps.

This video is primarily geared toward renting a car, rather than the camper vans which are very popular among tourists.

Some of Our Favorite Travel Videos We Think Other Travelers Would Love

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

Listen to the Iceland Travel Experts | One lane bridges in Iceland

Trying to figure out the Icelandic traffic signs?
Look no further! Our Iceland Travel experts have the perfect advise for you.

Iceland driving advice. How not to cross a one lane bridge.

This is me being the inconsiderate driver at a one lane bridge. It was absolutely unintentional and if I had any chance I would apologise to the driver who I held up because of my rushed driving.

Driving Across a Single-Lane Bridge in Iceland

One-Lane Bridge crossing in Iceland

No one in Iceland ever built a bridge for two, so throughout the country you need to keep an eye out (over and over again) for one-lane bridge signs. They aren't kidding. There is most definitely NOT room for two on any of these bridges. This rainy day crossing will give you an idea what it looks like in your rental car. Happy driving!

Insanely narrow bridge in Iceland

Driving in Iceland is different...

This not too far from Hjarðarholt. If you know the exact location, please add it in the comments.

One lane bridges are not uncommon in Iceland. This one was remarkably narrow. It feels like a car could not possibly fit as you approach. Rarely am I uncomfortable driving, but I was this time.

Driving In Iceland ???????? Ring Road

A compilation of our Ring Road travel experience during our Iceland road trip in the months of May and June in 4K. This video shows what it's like to drive in Iceland in rain, heavy wind, storm, sunshine and blue sky—on apshalt streets as well as gravel roads. It showcases the wild and naked nature of Iceland. We did the Ring Road, taken clockwise, with couple detours, including the coastal Road 76 and the newly asphalted Road 42 near the Fagradalsfjall volcano site.
