Episode 58 - Qacha's Nek to Maseru - Lesotho

This majestic road is called the A5 and runs from south of Lesotho all the way up to the capital Maseru for 225 kms. It was all paved, however I managed to find a good stretch of dirt during the last stretch that was really enjoyable.

In November 2021 I left Malta ???????? for a solo trip around the world on a Yamaha XT600e.
Throughout my journey, I am also visiting a number of missionary projects supported by Missio Malta which projects may be e.g. boreholes, houses, churches, medical equipment, renovations, educational programmes etc…

Lesotho Road Trip to a Remote Mountain Village via Semonkong

This has to be one of the most breathtaking scenic road trips I have done. The trip from the Eastern Cape of South Africa to Semonkong in Lesotho and then up into a remote mountain village is an incredible experience. Some friends and I went to support a local church up in the mountains, by taking blankets and clothes just before their winter cold and snow moved in. The trip from Semonkong to the mountain village of Ha Rameno is only 25km, but due to the wet conditions and occasional drivable roads, it took us 4hrs of 4x4 offroad driving to get there. The footage of the 4x4 driving here is on the good roads ????. I was too busy helping build tracks and helping navigate some of the paths to film the difficult sections, and my cellphone stabiliser, couldn't handle the bumps and g-forces either. I was grateful for the Toyota 4x4 vehicles, they really proved how tough they are.

The road trip through this part of Lesotho to Semonkong is a landscape photographers dream. We travelled at the end of April after there had been some good rainfall. The rivers were flowing just under their normal capacity, but it was wonderful to see so much water. South Africa has been experiencing severe drought, and I can’t tell you when last I saw a river flowing in full force. From the customs officers to the shepherds, the Lesotho people are kind and friendly. The road from the border post to Semonkong is in excellent condition. I have added this trip to my bucket list of places that I am going to ride on my bicycle. You just keep climbing and climbing as one mountain range leads to another.

The countryside is clean and has little villages neatly spread all over the landscape where small subsistence farming is the main activity. Sheep, goats, horse, donkeys and cattle are everywhere, being carefully watched by young shepherd boys and their mountain dogs. I had such a deep feeling of peace driving through this land. Life is simple and slow, but peaceful. There are hardly fences anywhere, something you don’t see in South Africa.

Semonkong Lodge Lesotho - Official Video

Armelle & Jonathan Halse took over the running of Semonkong Lodge, from the Frasers Trading Company, in 1990. The site on which the lodge stands, started by Syd Chaplain of Maluti Treks, was a favourite camping base for pony trekkers and fly fisherman looking to catch the famous brown or rainbow trout. Today, the lodge has grown to 23 stone and thatch rooms neatly positioned on the banks of the Maletsunyane River.

Deeply ingrained in the Semonkong Village and community which is just a stone’s throw away, the lodge is always bustling with activity as the Basotho people go about their daily lives. The balcony outside our Duck and Donkey Tavern, offers a fascinating view of daily life in Lesotho, as the Basotho’s, in their straw hats and traditional blankets, trot gracefully past on their ponies, followed by scuttling sheep, dogs, goats and donkeys. They are constantly transporting food and supplies, including large amounts of beer, from Semonkong to their villages which are sometimes days away.

Semonkong lodge believes in empowering individuals within their local community, using their environment and its conservation as the focal point of all their activities, creating long term sustainable income through tourism for as many people as possible. Please support all these activities as they provide jobs & strive to conserve the environment.

Semonkong Lodge offers you a glimpse of life in “The Kingdom in the Sky”, knowing you will return home refreshed and at peace.

Maletsunyane Waterfall & Visitor Centre, Semonkong, Lesotho.

One of the tallest straight drop waterfalls in Africa at 185m draws visitors from around the world. The new visitor centre is a welcome addition and sports conference facilities, a restaurant and bar and a well positioned viewing deck to enjoy the amazing spectacle of the gorge which is often shrouded in mist during the rainy season, hence the name Semonkong (Place of Smoke).
