Discover Gros Islet Town in Saint Lucia, West Indies (4K UHD)

Join me as we travel trough the beautiful town Gros Islet.
Gros Islet (English: Large Island) is a community near the northern tip of the island country of Saint Lucia, in the Gros Islet Quarter. Originally a quiet fishing village, it has become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country.
History
Originally settled by the Carib (and possibly Arawak), the area was first identified as Gros Islet in a French map from 1717.

The community was a Roman Catholic parish, and the first priests who arrived on the island settled in the village in 1749

In 1778, the Anglo-French War broke out between France and Great Britain. As part of the conflict, the British Royal Navy captured the island of Saint Lucia and built a naval base at Gros Islet Bay in 1782, temporarily changing the name to Fort Rodney. The island has changed hands between the British and French throughout its existence.

Between 1991 and 2001, the population rose 54%, the biggest increase in the country.
In 2001, the population of Gros Islet was 19,409, making it the second-most populous community in Saint Lucia, up from 13,505 in the 1991 census and 10,164 in the 1980 census.
Of that number, 9,307 were male and 10,102 were female

Saint Lucia Drive, Walk and Flight Around Volcanic Pitons

Brief summary of all day VIP excursion from Celebrity Cruise to the fascinating Volcanic Pitons in Caribbean island nation Saint Lucia. The journey includes driving through rain forests around town Soufriere, lunch visit to the Lanera resort and catamaran ride back to the cruise ship.

According to the Wikipedia

Saint Lucia (UK: /sənt luːˈsiːə, -ˈluːʃə/ (listen), US: /seɪnt ˈluːʃə/ (listen); French: Sainte-Lucie) is an island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.[8] The island was previously called Iyonola, the name given to the island by the native Arawaks, and later Hewanorra, the name given by the native Caribs, two separate Amerindian peoples. Part of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238 square miles) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. St. Lucia's largest city is Castries, its current capital, and its second largest is Soufrière, the first French colonial capital on the island.

The French were the first Europeans to settle on the island. They signed a treaty with the native Island Caribs in 1660. England took control of the island from 1663 to 1667. In ensuing years, it was at war with France fourteen times, and the rule of the island changed frequently. In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West after the Greek mythological character, Helen of Troy.

Representative government came about in 1840. From 1958 to 1962, the island was a member of the West Indies Federation. On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations as a Commonwealth realm. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law.

The volcanic island of Saint Lucia is more mountainous than most Caribbean islands, with the highest point being Mount Gimie, at 950 metres (3,120 feet) above sea level. Two other mountains, the Pitons, form the island's most famous landmark. They are located between Soufrière and Choiseul on the western side of the island. Forests cover about 77% of the land area.

Saint Lucia contains five terrestrial ecoregions: Windward Islands moist forests, Leeward Islands dry forests, Windward Islands dry forests, Windward Islands xeric scrub, and Lesser Antilles mangroves. It had a 2019 Forest Landscape Integrity Index mean score of 6.17/10, ranking it 84th globally out of 172 countries.

A species of lizard, Anolis luciae, is named for and is endemic to Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia geologic map indicates presence of Miocene/Oligocene volcanic rocks, Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, Quaternary volcanic edifices, flows, and pyroclastic deposits

The geology of St. Lucia can be described as composing three main areas. The oldest, 16–18 Ma, volcanic rocks are exposed from Castries northward and consist of eroded basalt and andesite centres. The middle, central highlands, portion of the island consists of dissected andesite centres, 10.4 to 1 Mya, while the lower southwest portion of the island contains recent activity from the Soufriere Volcanic Centre (SVC). This SVC, contains pyroclastic flow deposits, lava flows, domes, block and ash flow deposits, and explosion craters. This depression's perimeter includes the town of Soufriere, Mount Tabac, Mt. Gimie, Morne Bonin, and Gros Piton. At 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) in diameter, though the western portion is open towards the Grenada basin, the depression formed as recently as 100 kya. The depression is noted for its geothermal activity, especially at Sulphur Springs and Soufrière Estates, a phreatic eruption in 1776, and recent seismic activity (2000–2001).

The capital city of Saint Lucia is Castries (population 60,263) where 32.4% of the population lives. Other major towns include Gros Islet, Soufrière, and Vieux Fort. The population tends to be concentrated around the coast, with the interior more sparsely populated, due to the presence of dense forests.

The local climate is tropical, specifically a tropical rainforest climate (Af) under the Köppen climate classification, moderated by northeast trade winds, with a dry season from 1 December to 31 May, and a wet season from 1 June to 30 November (referred to by locals as the hurricane season).

Average daytime temperatures are around 30 °C (86.0 °F), and average nighttime temperatures are around 24 °C (75.2 °F). Since it is fairly close to the equator, the temperature does not fluctuate much between winter and summer. Average annual rainfall ranges from 1,300 mm (51.2 in) on the coast to 3,810 mm (150 in) in the rainforests.

driver view bus ride south on Castries-Gros Islet Hwy. from Monchy Rd. to Castries on St. Lucia

This is a driver view bus ride southbound from Monchy Rd. in Gros Islet, St. Lucia all the way into the capital city, Castries, on the Castries-Gros Islet Hwy. on 3/2/18. To be technically correct, the highway actually changes names to the John Compton Hwy. at the second roundabout about 12:12 right where the airport starts, but as you can see there is no indication of the name change by signage along the roadway. Also, the Compton highway continues right through town and when we turn left by the airport we are continuing on the same John Compton Hwy. and in fact don't turn off of it until the right turn at Rubis gas station at the very end. The highway is named for the first prime minister of St. Lucia upon independence from Britain in 1979, John Compton. When I looked at Google maps to confirm the identity of the highways given the lack of on ground signs, it showed red at exactly the places where in the video the traffic moves very slowly at times. Amazing that you can find that stuff without being a government or a special costly subscription to some specialized geography site or something like that.

driver view bus ride south on Castries-Gros Islet Hwy. and John Compton Hwy. from Choc to Castries

This is a driver view bus ride southbound on 2 of the named highways on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean, the Castries-Gros Islet Hwy. and the John Compton Hwy. We begin on an unnamed street coming from the Rainforest Aerial tram and soon come to a roundabout in the community of Choc where we take the Castries-Gros Islet Hwy. south until a second roundabout at around 3:57 which will be obvious because that is where the airport also starts. The John Compton Hwy. then takes over after the roundabout and our driver view bus ride on that highway continues to proceed south towards Castries and continues to do so through the city center, so we when we make a left turn by the airport we are still on the Compton Hwy. headed south and stay on it until the right turn by the Rubis gas station, which is the access road to the cruise terminal. Diligent searches on Google maps and Bing maps failed to reveal a name of the street we begin on before coming to the roundabout.

Incredibly, at least to me, in addition to the near complete absence of informative signage regarding the roads and streets, it actually turns out most of the streets and highways on St. Lucia don't even have a name, number or anything. It still amazes me that they can deliver mail there with so few street names and virtually no visible address numbers for houses or business. The date is 3/2/18 and we are coming back to our Viking cruise ship after a morning excursion. For anyone interested, the Compton highway is named for the first prime minister of St. Lucia upon independence from Britain in 1979, John Compton.

St.Lucia | Walking to Pigeon Island National Park - Gros Islet

Finally, I got to spend a night and day in Gros Islet. Gros Islet is a town near the northern tip of the island country of Saint Lucia. Originally a quiet fishing community, it has become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country because of number of things you do in and from Gros Islet.

My Airbnb was close to the street where the famous Gros Islet Street Party happens every Friday. I didn’t get to go but, on this episode, I will show a bit of the neighbourhood on my walk from Justinn Apartment (my Airbnb in Gros Islet highly recommend) to the Pigeon Island National Heritage as well the hour I got to spent at the public beach.

Before that lets talk a bit about the Gros Islet Street Party also known as Friday Night Street Party, in the heart of town every Friday except for good Friday at sunset, the residents of Gros Islet fire up their barbecues, ice down the Piton beer, set up table-top bars in the streets, and get ready to welcome thousands of enthusiastic visitors to the colourful fishing town’s narrow streets. Street vendors, Restaurants and bars offer a wide variety of Saint Lucian cuisine that feature chicken, pork, conch, lobster, and several fish species caught in the coastal waters nearby.

Otherwise, you visit several beaches, water parks, Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National park from Gros Islet. This is a 30 minutes’ walk from where I stayed so come along let’s check it out
