Kiribati Travel Guide

Kiribati Travel Guide: Curving its way above and below the equator, the Republic of Kiribati (pronounced 'Kiri-bas') encompasses the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, and was known under British rule as the Gilbert Islands. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation of just over 810 sq km, but its 33 atolls span a huge 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific. Most atolls surround turquoise lagoons and barely rise above the surrounding ocean, so it's rare to be out of the sight and sound of the sea.

Kiribati's recent colonial and WWII history has had little impact on the outer islands, where the people subsist on coconuts, breadfruit and fish as they have done for centuries. Even on the main island, Tarawa, most locals live in traditional raised thatched huts. Western influence is increasing, though, in the form of cars, bars, movies and the Internet, and inevitably there's an escalating urban drift from the outer islands to Tarawa.

The people of the islands are known as I-Kiribati. Wide-eyed children may chirp a bold 'mauri' (hello) to passing strangers, while their elders tend towards a laconic raise of an eyebrow in greeting. Nothing happens fast here, so wind down, relax and enjoy living on island time.

Visit Kiribati

On our trip around the world we wanted to go a little off the tourist trail and found our way to Tarawa, Kiribati. You can find Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands quite North from New Zealand above the Equator.

We had two weeks in Kiribati, and it was an experience. The islands are not ready for tourists but still make an effort welcoming travellers in. The last two nights we spent at Tepon Te Keekee Ecolodge. It was gorgeous. After crossing the channel with the ferry man we walk to a totally deserted resort with no one home. We continued snooping until we found an overwater bungalo with 2 chairs, a bed and a mosquito net and I assumed that it was our new home. Later in the day we found someone in the kitchen and decided to have lunch. They made battered fish, and fish curry served with fresh vegetables which are hard to come by in these islands! Continueing into the evening someone eventually asks us if we are staying there... we say yes... and then i assumed that was our 'Checking in'.

When in Tarawa we stayed at a place called Dreamers with Richard and Beta. They definitely became our home and really make you feel like you are part of their family while staying there.

Drive around Betio in Tarawa - Kiribati : Feb & March 2013

A short video clip around BETIO in Tarawa between the 14/02/13 to 07/03/13, throughout my 21 day stay i was able to get out & about in my hired vehicle.

[part 2] Driving around Tarawa in Kiribati during Feb & March 2013

Continue driving around Tarawa at different time during the day, trying to navigate between the terrible potholes in the road & the bad uneven road, avoiding & looking out for the humps in the road & trying to drive without being to distracted with the beautiful views & watching out for young children playing games along the roadway, watch out for the aggressive nature with the speeding buses & don't presume they are going to indicate when pulling out or stopping, there are no set bus stops & the buses will just stop anywhere, be patient with the road condition & keep to a low speed, night time isn't easy to film due to no street lights, on many occasions during the evening after darkness I would miss the humps in the road, apparently the locals change their tyres on a regular basis due to the terrible road conditions. Lots of local talk that the new road system & complete overall / renovation & construction should start later in 2013 & this of courses will be a very long & expensive project........... Happy driving !!!
Finally I was most surprised that fuel was cheaper in Tarawa than in Sydney Australia, travelled over 1100km during my 21 days in Tarawa as a tourist.

Flight arrival & Departure: Bonriki International Airport / Tarawa Kiribati / 18-2-13

During my 3rd visit in Tarawa & staying for 21 nights from the 14/02/13 to 07/03/13. I was staying at TAD'S GUESTHOUSE & the accommodation is only a 5 min's drive away from the Airport, with only two flights per week with AIR-PACIFIC on their BOEING 737-700 AIRCRAFT, Flight schedule are on Mondays & Thursdays & only a 3 hour direct flight from Nadi, this certainly is one of the highlights for many of the local people viewing the arrivals & departures, the departure flight leaves Nadi at 5am & 8am arrival into Tarawa, the departure time back to Nadi should be 9am, however these flights rarely leave on time & my flight departing Tarawa on the 07/03/13 was delayed for over 3 hours & missed my connecting flight back to Sydney Australia. Stayed in Nadi for one night [expense to the airline] & flying out direct to Sydney on the 08/03/13.
