Day Trip to Hidden Houston ???? (FULL EPISODE) S9 E5
If you look past the towering skyscrapers of this giant Metropolis, you'll find that some of Houston's biggest adventures are the most hidden. International cuisine, incredibly creative artworks and inspiring historic communities are just a few of the things you'll find on your trip through hidden Houston.
Climb deep underground to explore Houston’s city below the actual city. In this network of tunnels, you’ll find tons of shops, restaurants and, of course, tons of Houstonians!
Under the streets of Houston are the truly historic 1926 cisterns that once stored the town’s drinking water. It’s one of 5 cisterns in the world that are open for tours and the ONLY one in the nation. The dark quarters are equal parts incredibly cool and creepy.
Head to the Mosbacher Bridge in downtown and push the big red button for a crazy surprise in the bayou below. It’s something you’ve gotta see for yourself to truly understand.
In the Third Ward you’ll find a truly inspiring example of history that’s been turned into art. These homes were built as housing for freed slaves, but now they have been opened up to resident artists who create amazing rotating art installations 3 times a year that highlight issues in the community.
Take a walk on the weird side at one of the craziest installments of the Houston art scene. Built by a retired postal worker in his spare time from 1956-1979, the folk art of The Orange Show is both educational and confusing. Much of his art may not make sense to you and me, but that’s sorta the point!
Next door to The Orange Show is another folksy art spot with all sorts of structures covered in tile mosaics made by the community. You’ll see everything from a giant fish to a throne fit for a king!
Because Houston is so ethnically diverse, you can find all sorts of amazing international cuisines! One stop you’ve got to make is to the Mahatma Gandhi District (known as “Little India”) where you’ll find all sorts of authentic Indian eats.
The most acclaimed of the Indian restaraunts in the city is Himalaya Restaraunt. It might be in “Little India” but the flavors at this authentic Indian and Pakistani joint are BIG and delicious! I highly suggest the Chicken Tikka Masala and the samosas!
Head to the 5th Ward to chow down with the Houstonians at the Nickel Sandwich Grill (or “The Nickel” as the locals call it.) You’ll find a little bit of everything here, from barbecue and burgers to fried shrimp and boudain. It’s an authentic experience you can’t miss!
Since the “Bayou City” was originally setteled to be a major shipping port, it only makes sense that to truly experience it, you’ve gotta see the city from the water. Hop on a tour by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership to cruise this bayou that goes straight through town and learn the history of how it all started.

This is my latest video in a series of videos about moving to houston 2019 and moving to Houston 2020. I figure, I'm doing videos for traveling around the world, I might as well go over my current home town.
Especially since it seems that everyone is moving to Houston Texas, or Texas in general. If you are moving to Houston Texas 2019 or in 2020, I hope to offer more information on where to stay, why move here and the benefits and downside to moving with your move to Houston.
If you're relocating to Houston, like I said before, it's a good thing. Well, let me say, it depends on where you're coming from. I came from Washington DC, and let me tell you, there's way more benefits. If you ask me, why move to houston, I'd say number one, that the people are nicer than where I come from. Its population is extremely mixed, which makes me feel comfortable. Way more comfortable that the Washington DC metro area. Why move to houston texas instead of Dallas, San Antonio, or Austin? Well, I guess that will depend on if you're moving for a job. I love Houston and the people here. No slight against the other major cities, but Houston is perfect for me. But I do like to visit the others as often as I can. San Antonio would be my next favorite. We have the Houston Rockets, the Houston Astros and the Houston Texans. Winning teams. There are always lots of Houston events.Our Houston food is also all that, since we have food of all types. Lots of Houston fun. Houston Texas is the place to be. A great place to move. Twenty feet beneath downtown Houston are six miles of tunnels. When it gets hot, we go below ground. The tunnels have restaurants and shops to enjoy. They link to many of the downtown buildings. Tourists explore the tunnels, but weekdays are the best days to get access to it all. You'll be able to get to the tunnels via many of the buildings' lobbies.
I always get lost because the tunnels do not follow a grid pattern or any pattern.
If you travel to Houston, go beneath the city and explore.

Why Are There Miles of Tunnels Underground in Downtown Houston?
While in Houston for the Global Poker and Astros Poker Night, Sarah Herring heads out to explore the mystery behind Downtown's 6-7 miles of underground tunnels. The tunnels are climate controlled, contain restaurants, shops, gyms, and more, and connect more than 95 city blocks. Where did they come from? Why are they there? Who is in them? Herring talks to people in the underground system to get the story.

Tunnels under Houston, Texas
The Houston tunnel system is a network of subterranean, climate-controlled, pedestrian walkways that links 95 city blocks 6 metres (20 feet) below downtown Houston's streets. The system is approximately 11 kilometres (7 miles) long and is similar to tunnels in Dallas, Montreal and other cities around the world.
The first link in the Houston tunnel system was built in the 1930s by a business owner who wanted to connect two of the neighboring buildings he owned. Nowadays the entire system of tunnels are widely and heavily used by office workers and tourists. Only one building, Wells Fargo Plaza, offers direct access from the street to the Tunnel; other entry points are from street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators inside buildings that are connected to the tunnel. Access is allowed to the general public into these buildings with few restrictions, during normal operating hours, in order to reach the Tunnel where all kinds of shops and businesses can be accessed.
The City of Houston's website said it this way, The downtown Tunnel System is an interconnected series of restaurants, shops, etc. servicing all those who wish to avoid the characteristic Houston weather, while walking around in air conditioned comfort over the course of several miles.

Houston Underground!
If you are new to downtown Houston, you may wonder where all the people are? Where are the bustling city hordes of people out for lunch or going from building to building?? Well in the Bayou City, they are underground! It all started in the early 1960's when the Bank of the Southwest Building wanted to be linked to it's garage. Almost 50 years later, this tunnel system links 95 city blocks and runs 6 miles long! Ernie and Crew meet up with Houston Greeter Ken Steinhardt to take us down under to explore the Houston Downtown Tunnels.
