Doubtful Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand [Amazing Places 4K]

Doubtful Sound is the second most famous tourist destination in New Zealand. It is a beautiful fjord in Fiordland National Park, in the south-west of the country. Doubtful Sound is the deepest and second longest (40 km/25 mi) of the South Island's fjords. Some people prefer Doubtful Sound to the more famous Milford Sound because of its remotnes and solitude.

To reach and cruise the Doubtful Sound you first cruise by boat lake Manapouri, get on a bus to drive you over Wilmot Pass, and then board the main cruise boat (1:14).

Recorded February 2019 in 4K Ultra HD with Sony AX700.

Fiordland, New Zealand (4k Ultra HD) | Travel Guide 2022

TOP DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD - Fiordland, New Zealand

One of New Zealand's most spectacular and dramatic regions is Fiordland. By water, air, or hiking, take in the spectacular assets of this area.

The environment, which has been shaped by glaciers over 100,000 years, features waterfalls that plummet hundreds of meters into deep black fiords, old rainforest that clings to mountains, dazzling lakes, and granite peaks that still appear much as they did a thousand years ago.

Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds are located in the Fiordland National Park, which is a World Heritage Site. Rudyard Kipling called Milford Sound the Eighth Wonder of the World, and a picturesque flight over it will show you why.

While you can kayak across some of the fiords, if you want to view the less accessible fiords, eco-tours are available.

But this is the ideal location for hiking. Milford, Kepler, and Routeburn Tracks, three of New Zealand's great walks, are located in Fiordland National Park. Possibly the most well-known walk in New Zealand is the Milford Track. You travel approximately 53 kilometers from Te Anau to the Sutherland Falls, New Zealand's tallest waterfall, through the most breathtaking landscape, including mountains, lakes, and vast valleys.

Beautiful waterfalls in Milford Sound & Fiordland, New Zealand in 4K Ultra HD

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a fiord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor) and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination.[4] Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the World.

Milford Sound is named after Milford Haven in Wales, while the Cleddau River which flows into the sound is also named for its Welsh namesake. The Māori named the sound Piopiotahi after the thrush-like piopio bird, now extinct. Piopiotahi means a single piopio, harking back to the legend of Māui trying to win immortality for mankind—when Maui died in the attempt, a piopio was said to have flown here in mourning.

As a fiord, Milford Sound was formed by a process of glaciation over millions of years.

Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point (also named after a location close to Milford Haven in Wales)—the mouth of the fiord—and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) or more on either side. Among the peaks are The Elephant at 1,517 metres (4,977 ft), said to resemble an elephant's head,[7] and The Lion, 1,302 metres (4,272 ft), in the shape of a crouching lion.

Milford Sound sports two permanent waterfalls, Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. After heavy rain temporary waterfalls can be seen running down the steep sided rock faces that line the fiord. They are fed by rain water drenched moss and will last a few days at most once the rain stops.

Milford Sound is home to a variety of marine mammals, including Seals and the southernmost wild population of bottlenose dolphins. Whales, especially the Humpback and Southern Right Whales, are increasingly observed due to recoveries of each species. Penguins are also common within the sound, which is a breeding site for the Fiordland penguin and has subsequently been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.

As a result of Milford Sound's high rainfall and the density of saltwater, the surface of Milford Sound is a layer of freshwater containing tannins from the surrounding rainforest. This filters much of the sunlight which enters the water, allowing for a variety of Black coral to be found at depths of as shallow as 10 metres, significantly closer to the surface than usual.

Milford Sound attracts between 550,000 and 1 million visitors per year. This makes the sound one of New Zealand's most-visited tourist spots even with its remote location and long journey times from the nearest population centres. Many tourists take one of the boat tours which usually last one to two hours. They are offered by several companies, departing from the Milford Sound Visitors' Centre.

Tramping, canoeing, and some other water sports are possible. A small number of companies also provide overnight boat trips. There is otherwise only limited accommodation at the sound, and only a very small percentage of tourists stay more than the day. Tourists usually stay in Te Anau or Queenstown.

The Milford Discovery Centre & Underwater Observatory is located in Harrisons Cove on the north side of the fiord. Situated within the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, the underwater observatory allows visitors to view the fiord's unique marine environment at a depth of 10 metres. Due to a natural phenomenon called 'deep water emergence,' deep-water animals such as black coral can be viewed in the shallow waters surrounding the observatory. A dark surface layer of fresh water, stained brown by tannins from the surrounding forest, along with cold water temperatures allow the black corals to grow close to the surface throughout Milford Sound and Fiordland.

Milford Sound is also a destination for cruise ships.

The long distance to the sound means that tourist operators from Queenstown all depart very early in the day, arriving back only late in the evening. This ensures that most tourists visit Milford Sound within a few hours around midday, leading to some congestion on the roads and at the tourist facilities during the main season. The peak-time demand is also the reason for the large number of tour boats active in the sound at much the same time.

There are a variety of plane charter companies that fly to Milford Sound. Most of the companies fly out of Queenstown International Airport. These companies include: True South Flights, Glenorchy Air, Air Milford, and Milford Sound Scenic Flights.

Spectacular scenic beauty has earned this region a reputation as a significant walking destination and a must-see for anyone travelling to New Zealand.

Milford Sound is the most famous and easiest to access among the fourteen fiords in the Fiordland National Park. The Milford Road is a unique alpine journey considered one of the world's finest drives. The magnificence of this drive even amazes locals used to New Zealand's breathtaking scenery. Travel along sparkling clear-blue lakes, through valleys flanked by towering rugged ranges, over wild cascading rivers, through lush rain forests, and around majestic cliff faces. After reaching the high alpine Homer Tunnel, emerging to reveal a dramatic, picturesque glacier-cut valley before finally reaching the utterly stunning and iconic Milford Sound.

Fiordland offers many activities and opportunities to discover every aspect of its unique environment, from boat cruises and kayak options, scenic flights, glow-worm caves, or the unique Discovery Centre underwater observatory.
Located 20km from Te Anau, Lake Manapouri provides an excellent base to discover Doubtful Sound and offers services such as a café, restaurant, small shop and service station. Guided tours depart from both towns daily to visit the fiords or to explore the many other features within Fiordland National Park.

The picturesque lakeside township of Te Anau provides a perfect base to explore the area and provides visitors with various services. It is the closest service base to Milford Sound and is known as the “walking capital of the world” due to its proximity to the many outstanding walking tracks, including the Great Walks of the Milford Track, Routeburn Track and Kepler Track.

When you travel to Fiordland, you are visiting one of the most beautiful and dramatic parts of New Zealand. It is the perfect location for enjoying all outdoor activities or relaxing and taking in stunning mountain vistas.
