Dominica, Eastern Caribbean, march 2018 - 6 months after hurricane Maria.

Quick mix of drone shots showing progress of recovery after hurricane Maria - a monster which had max. winds up to 240 miles/hr. Different parts of island come back in different speeds. Unusual attack of vines looks interesting but strangles many trees. Some trees are doing well and bloom, while in other parts they have hard time to awake...

This clip is more about nature recovery than about people.

ep18 - Dominica, 6 months after hurricane Maria - part 1- HR54 Cloudy Bay - April 2018

s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) spent 10 days in Dominica, discovering an amazing destination for the ones looking for active vacations, and meaningful tourism. Dominica has spectacular scenery with breathtaking views over the volcanoes peaks or from the top of them. Truly a nature island.
We visited Dominica 6 months after hurricane Maria left deep scars, but even so we loved it all, imagining just how much more beautiful it must have been before Maria.
In part 1, we visit the south half of the island: Roseau, Trafalgar Falls, cool swim at Titou Gorge, hike the 6 miles of the Boiling Lake trail, relax our muscles in Wotton Waven hot springs, swim in Emerald Pool, visit Scott's Head and snorkel at Champagne Reef.
It was all an unexpected surprise, way above expectations, and we felt very safe both in the anchorages and while visiting inland. April 2018

Dominica - Three Years After Hurricane Maria. Journey in 4K

Today, on 18th of September 2020, on third anniversary of Hurricane Maria striking Dominica, I share with you this video, full of footage never seen before. Lots of this footage is my personal, showing damage to our home at the time, and of us salvaging our stuff, and cutting a path through fallen forest to our neighbours. Well, it is time to share it all.

I noticed, that busy with everyday life, we tend to forget noticing how far we progressed through just three short years. I do hope this video will show it to you, and - if you watch from abroad and did not experience this hurricane - it will also give you a better idea what we all went through.

Lots of it is filmed in 4K, but some shots are shaky, from a small hand-held camera. I hope it is ok, as it adds authentic feel to it, and not always I had a chance to film well at these moments.

If you like it - please SHARE it with friends, and SUBSCRIBE for more videos. Such important moments in life deserve being seen and shared, I believe.
Thank you for watching, I hope I won't have a chance of filming anything like that again. Still - I am ready, if so.

(Video received an award at Tagore International Film Festival 2020 in India, and is shortlisted for Southampton Short Film Week 2020 in UK).

Roseau before and after Hurricane Maria in Dominica, floods, surge, winds, damage,
Hurricane Maria, enormous damage in Dominica ,floods and collapsed houses in RoseauDominica[edit]
Rainfall ahead of the hurricane caused several landslides in Dominica as water levels across the island began to rise by the afternoon of September 18.[23] At 21:35 ATS that day (1:35 UTC, September 19), the core of Maria moved directly over Dominica with wind speeds of 160 mph (260 km/h), or Category 5 intensity. The extreme winds blew the roofs off many houses, including the official residence of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who required rescue when his home began to flood.[24] Reports from Roseau indicate total devastation, with half the village flooded, cars stranded, and stretches of residential area flattened.[25][26] Most of the island was left without cellular, radio, or internet service. Skerrit called the devastation mind boggling and indicated immediate priority was to rescue survivors rather than assess damage.[27] As of September 19, according to an update from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), there have been 6 deaths on Dominica as a result of the hurricane, based on preliminary information.[21]

According to Wikipedia

Hurricane Maria was a deadly Category 5 hurricane that devastated Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico in September 2017. It is regarded as the worst natural disaster in recorded history to affect those islands and was also the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Mitch in 1998. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017, Maria was the thirteenth named storm, eighth consecutive hurricane, fourth major hurricane, second Category 5 hurricane, and deadliest storm of the hyperactive 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. At its peak, the hurricane caused catastrophic destruction and numerous fatalities across the northeastern Caribbean, compounding recovery efforts in the areas of the Leeward Islands already struck by Hurricane Irma. Total losses from the hurricane are estimated at upwards of $91.61 billion (2017 USD), mostly in Puerto Rico, ranking it as the third-costliest tropical cyclone on record.

Dominica (/ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/ DOM-ih-NEE-kə; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the West Indies.[9] The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located near Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.

The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for Sunday. It was later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Great Britain took possession in 1763 after the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as its official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.
