St George, Bermuda
This is a short video of St. George's Bermuda, a Unesco World Heritage Site. For details, go through
The town of St. George, which is located in St. George's Parish at the eastern end of Bermuda is steeped with history. This is where the first settlement of Bermuda began in 1609 when Sir George Somers and his crewmen arrived after their sailship wrecked on a reef nearby.
The Harbor town was the first capital of Bermuda before Hamilton City became the new capital. Other than many historic buildings, churches and museums, the place has many quaint shops, cobblestone narrow streets that still bear the names of the first parishioners, old pastel-coloured houses with slanted white roofs made of limestones, beautiful gardens & parks... it's a different world altogether.
There are many historic forts in St. George that were built by the British during the colonial era. Among them, Fort St. Catherine located next to St. Catherine's beach is one of the most popular and showcased. Construction of the Unfinished Church could not be completed due parish infightings and lack of funds. These are all today part of the Unesco World Heritage Site.
Out of several lovely beaches, Tobacco Bay Beach is the one which is most visited because it's not only great for snorkelling, it has full amenities including showers and change rooms, a beach bar, beach & snorkel rentals etc. There are many great restaurants as well as bars and boutique shops in St. Georges. Water Street is the main street here and most of the prominent shops and eateries are located along this street.

If you are in St. George's, head out to Mama Angie's to get an amazing version of this local classic. A popular lunch spot among locals, Mama Angie's is open for both breakfast and lunch, serving hearty omelettes, sandwiches and burgers alongside Bermudian favorites. It sits behind a shuttered door in the Hall Building on York Street, at the corner of King Street across from Somers Garden. The basic fish sandwich recipe is mostly the same island-wide: deep-fried fillets of fish with tartar sauce piled on raisin bread toast. Sounds a bit weird, but it is strangely scrumptious! If you are visiting Bermuda, then here are some of the culinary delights that you must try out... some of them are Bermuda's very own.
CODFISH BREAKFAST is one of the traditional and balanced breakfasts which is prevalent in Bermuda since the time of early settlement on the island. At present, many Bermudians enjoy the treat mostly on Sundays. It comprises of salted codfish topped with a sauce, hard-boiled egg, chopped banana, boiled potatoes, and avocadi slices. Several local restaurants serve the dish including Paraquet Restaurant located in Paget.
CODFISH CAKES are also equally popular on the island. These too are made using salted codfish, boiled potatoes and several other ingredients. Some of the great places to try them out are Art Mel's Spicy & Dicey located at the outskirts of Hamilton City and Paraquet in Paget.
However, Art Mel's is really famous for its superb FISH SANDWICHES that are made with raisin bread and fried local fish such as Rockfish or Wahoo. You can get other types of bread as well including wheat bread. The quantity is huge. Another great place to try out Fish Sandwich is at Rosa's in Hamilton.
Another great item here is the BERMUDA RUM CAKES... these cakes are prepared with a little dash of local rum and they come in different wonderful flavours including lemon and vanilla. You can get them at Bermuda Rumcake Company located at the Royal Naval Dockyard.
A must-try soup in Bermuda which is served in most Bermudian restaurants is BERMUDA FISH CHOWDER. It is usually prepared with ground heads of rockfish, Outerbridge's Sherry Pepper and Gosling's Black Seal Rum.
If you are fond of seafood, then do try out BERMUDA SPINY LOBSTERS that are usually available from September through March. These are smaller in size compared to the ones from Maine, but their tails are longer and meatier. You can get them in all seafood restaurants here including Lobster Pot, Blu Bar & Grill etc.
Another traditional favourite in Bermuda is MUSSEL PIE... ingredients for fillings include mussel meat boiled in fish stock or water, diced carrots, celery, onion, potatoes, butter, flour, thyme, salt, pepper etc. Few other traditional dishes include SHARK HASH which is available only in selective places these days, PEAS N' RICE etc.
TRADITIONAL AFTERNOON TEA is very popular in Bermuda and almost all Bermudians indulge in this between 3 to 5pm daily. It is like a traditional full English tea and comes with finger sandwiches, scones, sweets and cookies and of course fine tea served on china pots. Several places including Sweet P at St. George serve afternoon tea.
Bermuda doesn't have any international fast-food franchise like the Mc Donalds except for one outlet of KFC in Hamilton. However, it has its own fast-food franchises like Buzz, Mr. Chicken etc. Try out Swiss & Mushroom Burger at Mr. Chicken... it's excellent.
Out of the alcoholic beverages, one name that stands out is Bermuda's GOSLING'S RUM which is produced by Gosling's Brothers Limited and they have a large outlet in Hamilton City. This rum is used as an ingredient in various island cocktails such as RUM SWIZZLE and DARK N' STORMY. You can try them out in Bermuda's famous and the oldest pub SWIZZLE INN located in Hamilton Parish. They are the proud inventor of the cocktail Rum Swizzle which is created using Gosling's rum, fruit juices, bitters and sweeteners.

Since opening on March 24th 2009, Pearl has consistently been one of the premier sushi spots in Bermuda. Pearl is simplistic in their approach, serving classic maki, nigiri, and sashimi that everyone is familiar with, but simultaneously awe inspiring with their ability to diverge from these staples and deliver fresh, unique, and creative options. The chefs are very experienced and you have a wide variety of protein options to choose from: salmon, tuna, rockfish, chicken, eel, squid, beef and so on. But they make sure not to leave out vegan/vegetarian options if you subscribe to this sort of eating preference. The staff is always smiling and they make sure you’re taken care of. Pearl is world class dining with an amazing view of Hamilton Harbor. The atmosphere is intimate and inviting. If you live or visit Bermuda you definitely have to check them out.
