They Just Let Us TAKE a Catamaran! [Seawind 1160 Lite Sailing Review/Vlog #1] Learning the Lines

This video is the first in a multi-part sailing/cruising review of the Seawind 1160 Lite. We had the opportunity to cruise aboard a Seawind 1160 Lite for three days alone to really get a feel for if this boat will be right for us. We vlogged about our trip and we'll be sharing what our thoughts are about the boat as much as possible.

We're seriously considering the Seawind 1160 Lite for our next boat because of the long list of positives this catamaran has to offer. Here's just a few of the most important ones to us:

Size - We don't want a huge cat.
Seaworthiness - Plenty of Seawinds have circumnavigated.
Performance - The Seawind 1160 lite is designed to sail well first and foremost.
Livability - She's got a lot of accommodation and room for a 38' boat.
Price point - At a $310,000 base price for a new boat, the Seawind 1160 lite is the most affordable performance cruising catamaran in existence.

All of that combined with the fact that we can set one up with electric outboards, daggerboards, and lifting rudders means we think that the Seawind 1160 Lite might be the best boat possible for our budget and lifestyle.

What do you think?

Base price for a Seawind 1160 Lite:
$310,000

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Catamaran vs Monohull - A comprehensive review from owners of both

Part 2 right here:

A debate as old as time itself! Which is better, a catamaran or a monohull? I'll give away the answer here: like all boats, both are a compromise. However, they each are better for different missions. In fact while we love our Leopard 46, we will own monohulls in the future.

HH55 Catamaran. Guided Tour & Our Review. Perfect Balance of Performance and Comfort.

We took a guided tour of the HH55 Catamaran at this year's Annapolis Sailboat Show. You can tell by looking at its sleek shape and daggerboards and it's all-carbon fibre design that this catamaran is built for speed and sailing performance.

Usually, with a performance boat, you end up with very slim hulls with very little in the way of comfort and cabinets to carry the numerous belongings that you would need to live full time on a Catamaran. So, usually, Janice and I are not huge fans of the performance focussed Cats as a full-time liveaboard option.

This boat was different. The furnishings were beautiful and comfortable and the cabins and heads seemed spacious enough and well-appointed. We were very impressed, but, what does all of this performance and comfort cost?

Watch the video to find out what we thought of the boat and see if you like it enough for the price you have to pay, to make it your next boat.

If you found the video informative our helpful, please like and share this video.

Having a self-sufficient boat isn’t negotiable for us.  Because we spend weeks and sometimes months away from civilization.  So, managing our resources is a must and we’re always looking for better ways to do so.  And that is exactly where Hybrid Electric comes in.

It’s all about drastically increasing our range, efficiency, redundancy and a whole lot more.  Any manufacturer who isn’t installing a similar system will.  Because Parallel Hybrid motors have all the benefits of both electric and diesel propulsion but with even more functionality…like hydrogeneration. This system is one of the big reasons we were drawn to HH Catamarans.

It’s a simple system but it has many modes and that is why we have dedicated an entire video to our hybrid electric set up.  So, if you’ve been curious about what it is, how it works or who it’s for…this one is for you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Catamaran Outremer 55. The perfect balance between performance and comfort

Announced at 2020 Boot Düsseldorf boat show, The Outremer 55 performance catamaran is the next generation of performance yachting. Hull #1 was launched November 2020!

She is easy to handle, short-handed or alone. She offers large living spaces, circulation on board, light and ventilation, setting new standards within the performance Catamaran world.

Key Features of the Outremer 55 Performance Catamaran
High average speeds and good course keeping allowed by the retractable daggerboards shorten passage times meaning you can get to shelter ahead of bad weather.

The CFD (Computational Fluids Dynamics) models have reduced drag and forward resistance, while allowing for higher carrying capacity when blue water cruising.

All sail handling maneuvers are brought back to the helm station, controlled by winches set lower for easy control, allowing you to manage the boat single-handed.

A new feature for an Outremer, the twin helm stations can be tilted either inboard, into the cockpit, or outboard to the side-deck. This allows you to be comfortably sat on the double bench seat on deck, with a perfect view of the sail plan. In heavy weather, or under too hot a sun, you can pivot them down to the lower position. You will then benefit from optimal protection under the bimini while keeping an unobstructed view through the saloon windows.

The large island galley, the boat’s nerve center, is very friendly. With its foldable extension, it allows you to dine with excellent visibility forward, or allows you to keep an eye on the course while cooking, and still be able to chat with those in the cockpit or saloon.

Extensive research was carried out on the choice of materials with low environmental impact for the design and construction of the Outremer 55. For example the use of reusable infusion devices (silicone sheet type) and optimized on-board energy management.

Increased outboard motor horsepower by more then 20%!

This week on the channel, we walk through how we increased the horsepower of out Tohatsu 8hp dinghy outboard motor to 9.8Hp, a 22.5% increase. In doing so, our 9' 8 aluminum rib now planes with 3 people aboard where it would don't do the with 8hp.

We love the ocean and boating! We cruise in our 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge, Calypso II, on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands. Join us on our adventures - we share favorite ports and places to visit, favorite boating products, and how-tos.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

+ Our current boat - Calypso II, a 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:

In 2019, we wanted a new boat that was bigger and had a longer range, so we targeted 40-footers with diesel power to achieve both of these goals. With our criteria and budget, we searched for a diesel-powered Sea Ray 400 Sedanbridge 2001 or newer. After scouring the Internet we found a boat on the Chesapeake Bay which would become Calypso II.

+ Specs - 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:

• Length: 40 feet
• Beam: 14 feet
• Draft: 4 feet
• Fuel: diesel 350 gal
• Power: 2 Caterpillar 3126 inboard straight-shaft turbocharged diesel engines 350hp each

---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Dinghy

2021 North Atlantic Inflatables, 9 8 Aluminum RIB
Tohatsu 8Hp outboard motor

---------------------------------------------------------------------

+ Where we cruise:

Calypso II is moored in Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA - in Buzzards Bay. We use our boat to explore the islands, ports, coves, and harbors of this amazing place.

For overnight boating, we often head to Cuttyhunk Island, Martha’s Vineyard Island or Nantucket Island, off the coast of Massachusetts. In 2021, we plan to head to Maine to explore some of the beautiful harbors and ports of Southern and Mid-Coast Maine.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Our commitment to the sea:

Because we enjoy boating and the fun it brings our family, we are committed to protecting the bays, harbors, and oceans we cruise on, as well as the ones we dream about. Starting with following no-discharge rules, not using disposable plastic bottles, and only using biodegradable products on Calypso II, we try to do our part to preserve this invaluable resource.

What is a Trawler!? Allow me to explain...trawls, trolls, and displacement hulls!

Welcome aboard my Trawler for a Tech Talk with Captain Butch. I discuss the origination of the term Trawler, and what justifies calling a certain type of boat a trawler. This has always been a commonly debated topic among the cruising community who has a particular affinity for Trawler Style vessels and the Trawler Lifestyle as a whole. I give you my take and opinion on the matter, which is quite timely because I was recently invited to join the infamous Jeff Merrill and Mark Pittman Jr. of JMYS Trawler Specialists to be part of one of their signature Cruising Conversations episodes down in Stuart, FL at Trawlerfest for the @JeffMerrillYachts Youtube Channel. That video will be live on May 6, 2023, so be sure to check it out and subscribe to the JMYS YT Channel if you haven't already done so.

Do Outboards Make Sense on a Performance Cruising Catamaran?

As we get nearer to completion of our Seawind Catamaran we are starting to finalize our options for the boat. One of the most important options choice for us was if and which engines to upgrade to. The debate of inboard diesel vs gas outboard engines is a very interesting one in the sailing catamaran world. It is one that really had us on the fence. For now let’s go over all the engine options for the Seawind 1160 and although we are talking about this boat specifically the same points can and mostly do apply in some way to any other catamaran that may be debating inboard vs. outboard engines.
