Diving Double Reef Curaçao | The Shore Dive Collection | TropicLens - 4K

Appropriately named Double Reef has lots of sea life across both the inner and outer reef. It also has quite a bit going on above ground as the Park Lucha Pa Libertat or Fight For Freedom Park is a popular destination for fishing, tours and exercise.

Although the dive site entry is a literal walk in the park, it is quite long at 650 feet (200 meters); but well worth the effort. We documented our first convoluted barrel sponge here and also spotted a few uncommon critters including a cornetfish and juvenile blue parrotfish and jackknife fishes. As usual, the video explains everything you need to know about how to dive Double Reef.

We want to encourage more shore diving, so this video provides some guidance where the site is, how to dive it and what you may see there. If you want to skip to or review specific topics, the section timings are as follows.

UNCOMMON SEA LIFE AND FIRST TIME CAPTURE IDENTIFICATION

We primarily use two sources to validate sea life we don’t recognize. The first is Florent's Guide To TheTropical Reefs which can be found at Its free and has lots of pictures, but is not comprehensive. The second is “The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)”. The box set can be found on Amazon; however with all our travels, we also purchased the eBooks ( so we don’t have to carry an extra five pounds of paper in our luggage. :-) We also reference other sources from time to time as well.

Here are some links to more information/images about creatures from this video.

Freediving the ship wreck at Playa Santa Cruz, Curacao: GoPro 2014

This was a great day freediving in Curacao. Daniel made this video while we were on the island going to medical school.

The Blue Room Cave, Curacao (45 minute hike to an amazing underwater cave)

The Blue Room Cave is located on the northwest side of Curacao. It takes about 45 minutes to hike there from Playa Santa Cruz. This underwater cave has a wide opening that opens and closes with the water going up and down and you can swim through to access this large cave. As the sun reflects through the opening, it gives the entire cave a blue hew.

Diving Playa Piskadó Curaçao | The Shore Dive Collection | TropicLens 4K

Playa Piskadó is easily one of our favorite west side dive sites. There are schools of silversides, scads, white mullets and palometa as well as pods of squid and regular turtles that joyfully play with divers and snorkelers…and that’s just in the shallows!

We also saw black margate, octopus and a shameface heart crab, which was first time capture for us. There is a statute of Neptune looking out over the expansive reef that drops down to more than 100 feet and a terrific ecosystem under the cliffs to the right.

This is a fantastic location that is serviced by food vendors, showers, bathrooms and watersport rentals. If you have a car, definitely consider a drive to the west side and make Playa Piskadó a day trip.

We want to encourage more shore diving, so this video provides some guidance where the site is, how to dive it and what you may see there. If you want to skip to or review specific topics, the section timings are as follows.

Diving The Caribbean Sea | Curacao

This video was created during our stay at Scuba Lodge on Curacao in the Caribbean Sea in September 2021. It gives an impression of scuba diving on Curacao and a few dive sites like Porto Mari, Cas Abou, Vaersenbaai, Alice in Wonderland, Tugboat, La Palapa, Superior Producer and Scuba Lodge Reef(all shore dives).

It lead to some beautiful dive encounters: a seahorse, frogfish, sea turtles, barracudas, secretary blenny, trunkfish, banded coral shrimp, sharptail eels, green moray eels and spotted moray eels.

Filmed with a Panasonic GH5 and a Nauticam NA-GH5 Underwater Housing, Nauticam Compact Macro Converter CMC-1, Atomos Ninja V Monitor, Weefine Solar Flare 12000 Video Light, Weefine ambient Light Filters for Solar Flare 12000.

Diving Playa Caracasbaai Curaçao | The Shore Dive Collection | TropicLens 4K

This was the very first shore dive we made in Curaçao and it made quite an impression. Overall, many of the shore dives have very easy entries with lots of life in the shallow just a few feet from shore and they only get better on the reefs.

Playa Caracasbaai is almost like three reefs in one with the main reef right in front of the beach, a second reef under the rocky cliffs on the west end and a fairly long finger stretching into the bay on the east end. We also saw quite a bit at night as well…so plan on making a number of dives here to get the full experience!

Notable sightings for us included a viper moray, spotted eagle ray, mosaic sand dollar and cornetfish.

We want to encourage more shore diving, so this video provides some guidance where the site is, how to dive it and what you may see there. If you want to skip to or review specific topics, the section timings are as follows.

Freediving at Cas Abou Beach - Take a PADI Freediving Course in Curacao
If you think freediving is just like snorkeling (but going really deep) – think again. Freediving is an entirely different way to experience the underwater world. You’ll dive deeper, stay down longer, and feel part of the ocean itself.

Freediving can also be a competitive sport. Divers around the world train for years to set world records in static apnea, dynamic apnea, free immersion and constant weight freediving.

What is Freediving?
Diving into deep waters on one breath and without any breathing apparatus is referred to as ‘freediving’. Freedivers use inward control, discipline and power to descend into the ocean while holding their breath until they resurface. Freediving is both a recreational and competitive sport, with many freediving competitions being held regularly around the world.

About Cas Abou Beach
“Cas Abou Beach, Curaçao: Ringed by reefs, Curaçao hides a Caribbean underwater wonderland, and this beach is one of the few sandy ones on the arid island, with a bar and a shop to rent snorkel gear. Slip straight into the shallow crystalline bay alive with sea fans and coral, tropical fish, sponges, sea turtles, and more.” says Kimberley Lovato from National Geographic

History of the Area
The Cas Abao plantation has existed in Curacao since the 17th century and used to include almost a thousand acres of land. It used to be named Engelenberg after its owner, Willebrord van Engelen, who also owned the Van Engelen plantation in the heart of Willemstad.

The main activity was agriculture, while salt mining was also practiced. The plantation incurred heavy damage during the slave rebellion of 1795 and the English sackings which took place some 14 years later. It was completely restored around 1970, at which time a number of modifications were applied to facades, dormers and windows.
