Info from Wikipedia about the Solomon Islands:

Solomon Islands is a sovereign state consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania lying to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu and covering a land area of 28,400 square kilometres (11,000 sq mi).The country has a population of 652,858 [7] and its capital, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal. The country takes its name from the Solomon Islands archipelago, which is a collection of Melanesian islands that also includes the North Solomon Islands (a part of Papua New Guinea), but excludes outlying islands, such as Rennell and Bellona, and the Santa Cruz Islands.

In 1568, the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to visit them, naming them the Islas Salomón.[8] Britain defined its area of interest in the Solomon Islands archipelago in June 1893, when Captain Gibson R.N., of HMS Curacoa, declared the southern Solomon Islands a British protectorate.[9][10] During World War II, the Solomon Islands campaign (1942–1945) saw fierce fighting between the United States, Commonwealth forces and the Empire of Japan, such as in the Battle of Guadalcanal.

The official name of the then British administration was changed from the British Solomon Islands Protectorate to the Solomon Islands in 1975, and self-government was achieved the following year. Independence was obtained, and the name changed to just Solomon Islands (without the definite article), in 1978. At independence, Solomon Islands became a constitutional monarchy. The Queen of Solomon Islands is Elizabeth II, represented by the Governor-General.

SOLOMON ISLANDS: Children diving from pier in Ghizo Island (Pacific Ocean) #travel #solomonislands

Island of Ghizo, Solomon Islands, Pacific Ocean - local children jumping in Ghizo (Gizo) the water in the Solomon Islands. Let's travel to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean and let's visit the island of Ghizo to view local children diving from a pier in the sea. Here are a few, very funny, clips of young children diving in the sea (Pacific Ocean) from the wharf at Ghizo Island, in the Pacific Ocean, in the Solomon Islands. I had such a great time videotaping this!! Ghizo Island, home to Gizo, the capital of the Western Province, Solomon Islands. The island is named after an infamous local head-hunter. It is located west of New Georgia and Kolombangara.
Ghizo is relatively small when compared to the surrounding islands, the island is 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) long and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) wide, with a summit elevation of 180 metres (590 ft) (Maringe Hill). The Bilua language is spoken on Ghizo Island.

This is why I dive the Solomon Islands.

Remote and truly beautiful the Solomon Islands is a diver's dream destination. Part of the coral triangle with a staggering diversity of marine species, coral and dive sites, it somehow remains one of the least dived areas of the world. Diving the Solomon Islands - USS Kanawha

USS Kanawha, like the USS Aaron Ward and RNZN Moa, was sunk on the 7th of April 1943. She stayed on station to complete refuelling duties and was at the exit of Tulagi harbour when the air raid struck. The Kanawha was hit in both the forward fuel hold and rear mechanical spaces.

The fires were severe and during the evening, due to water from the fire tugs and sprung hull plates, she could not remain afloat and passed below the waters off Tulagi’s eastern point.

The Kanawha, US Navy Fleet oiler 476’ long, was also a supply vessel for the US Marines. Though it lies in 60 metres it is only 40 metres to the forward deck and 45 metres to the stern deck

Uepi Island Resort - Marovo Lagune - Diving Amazing Solomon Islands

From their website :

Almost one thousand tropical islands stretching in a gentle arc from the eastern end of Papua New Guinea to the northern reaches of Vanuatu. Dominated by ocean expanses, dense green rain forest, endless blue lagoons, stunningly diverse coral reefs, and prolific fish life. Populated by Melanesians and Polynesians, the majority of who live in traditional rural villages and utilise traditional skills, knowledge and 'kastom' in their daily lives.

Marovo Lagoon
Marovo Lagoon is the longest saltwater lagoon in the world. The two major volcanic islands of Vangunu and New Georgia bound it on its southern and western sides. The northern boundary consists of 130 kms of raised barrier reef with about 100 individual islands along its length. A smaller third volcanic island, Gatakae Island, occupies the southeastern corner. The inner lagoon also has numerous islands. With its many and complex terrestrial and marine habitats, the natural beauty and environment of Marovo Lagoon is outstanding.

Uepi Island
A classic raised barrier reef island, covered in impressive rainforest, outlined by fringing reef and sandy beach; flanked by the warm lagoon waters on one side, and the oceanic depths (6000ft/2000m) of The Slot, a deep marine abyss, on the other. Uepi Island is approximately 2.5 km long and 300 metres wide, and the whole area, aside from the resort's cultivated tropical gardens, is covered with tropical rainforest interspersed with walking tracks. Uepi Resort is the only occupier of this remote island.

underwatercam is a nature, diving and marinelife related video production and stock footage library. We expand our range of films constantly. Films about nature and relaxing in nature are taking recently more of our focus We don't have to save nature and the oceans, we simply have to save or take care of ourselves as we are nature. With every natural and wild habitat we destroy, we kill a part of us. By understanding this and by understanding the fact, that nature and the oceans and the planet are the base of our physical being, we understand destroying and harming the planet, is harming our body and soul and threatens our surviving as a species. We like to show more of natures beauty to create the feeling of aw, gratefulness and respect.
We hope we reach you with this message and hope you subscribe and share our work and intentions. Ocean greetings, Peter Schneider

Kennedy Island and the story of PT109:

Kennedy was a lieutenant during WWII and captain of the PT109, boat that was wrecked during a japanese attack. Kennedy and his crew swam to Plum Pudding Island, which will later be renamed Kennedy island. Because they had no food or water, they decided to swim South to Olasana Island, and later Kennedy went to Naru Island to find help.
