Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

Travel Guide to Lesotho

►Read the blog:

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

Have you ever wondered what Swaziland is like? Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in Africa, but it is now starting to boom because of the full support of their government in promoting tourism. It has so much to offer in such a small space.

The highlight of our trip was the visit to Hlane Royal National Park, which is the largest in Swaziland and the best park to see the big five.

Lesotho Daily Life

Lesotho (le-soo-too), officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. The first settlers were Bantu speaking people who called themselves the Basotho.

Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, and easily accessible from Johannesburg, Lesotho is a vastly underrated tourist destination. In comparison to South Africa, Lesotho's Basotho people are unique in culture, along with the highland terrain, which is a topographical extreme. The country's hospitable mountain lodges and trading posts will give travelers a refreshing perspective of Southern Africa.

Lesotho is essentially an alpine country, where villagers on horseback in multi-coloured balaclavas and blankets tread precipitous terrain. The hiking and trekking is often made on a famed Basotho pony, in order to enjoy the world class infrastructure of its three stunning national parks.

The 1000m-high lowlands offer craft shopping and sights, but don't miss a trip to the southern, central or northeastern highlands, where streams traverse ancient ground where dinosaurs flourished.

From Lesotho, we journey to a nearby fishing village just beyond the kingdom's peripheries, near Johannesburg.

A Journey through Rural Lesotho | Travel Documentary

Lesotho Kingdom in the Sky. On this episode of Adventure Calls we travel through Rural Lesotho in a rented 4WD Nissan which had been outfitted for true adventure. We would go horse trekking deep in the Lesotho mountains, visit one of the world tallest waterfalls and drive through the roughest terrains imaginable towards South Africa. We also got an opportunity to donate school materials which was donated by fans, friends and family.

You can learn more about the Malealea Development Trust here where you can also donate to those in need

Lesotho was our very first travel documentary that we filmed.

Lesotho is a fantastic place to visit and a place we highly recommend. If you stay longer and plan to drive around the more rural areas you should highly consider bringing or renting a good 4WD car (the cheapest and easiest option is in Johannesburg, South Africa). Many places are inaccessible without.

We hope you will enjoy this video and please subscribe to our channel for more adventures around the world. Please leave any comments and questions below. We love to interact with our viewers :)

A huge thanks to Darren Lowe for composing our theme music tracks. Fantastic job my friend.

MASERU: The Capital City of LESOTHO | 10 INTERESTING FACTS

Maseru, the largest city in Lesotho, is the capital of the Maseru District and is the only city. The name ‘Maseru’ is a Sesotho word meaning ‘red sandstones’. The city lies directly on the Lesotho-South Africa border, on the Caledon River. In the 2016 census, Maseru had a population of 330,760 people. Lying in a shallow valley at the foot of the Sehlabeng-Sa-Likhama foothills of the Maloti Mountains, Maseru has an area of about 138 square kilometers. In this video, we will discover 10 facts about this beautiful African city.

The border between Lesotho and South Africa is 909 kilometers long and forms a complete loop, as Lesotho is an enclave completely surrounded by South Africa. There are 11 fully functional road borders between South Africa and Lesotho. Maseru bridge is one of them. It is open 24hrs and is located in the town of Maseru which is in Lesotho. Passports are needed to enter Lesotho or go back to South Africa. They must be valid for a minimum of 6 months.

Other requirements(optional) are; Original vehicle registration papers, vehicle license papers, valid driver's license.
It is advised to have a red emergency triangle. You are not allowed to take plants out of the country. The toll fee for entering Lesotho is determined by the weight of your vehicle. Compulsory vaccinations should be taken for Yellow Fever only if coming into the country from an affected area. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus and Polio. All visitors must hold documents and tickets required for their return or onward journey and enough funds to cover their stay. Visitors who wish to stay longer than 14 days in the country, are expected to apply for extensions at the Lesotho Immigration Authorities within the initial 14 day period.

Lesotho’s parliament building is located on Mpilo Hill in Maseru. It was designed by China Northeast Architectural design and Research Institute and constructed by the China Yanjian Group. The parliament complex covers an area of 43,273 square meters. This includes a four storey building that houses the National Assembly offices, accessory buildings, parking lot, the debate chamber, open grounds, the reception checkpoint, and a retaining wall.

The parliament building opening coincided with a change in the Lesotho electoral system which introduced legislators chosen through a mixed-member proportional (MMP) representation. Due to the instability of the coalition governments, the building ended up being seen by most Basotho as the epitome of political dysfunction.

The building was inaugurated in 2012. The debate chamber roof is designed as a mokorotlo, the traditional Lesotho hat which is a distinctive national symbol. There are several hotels close to the magnificent building offering accommodation like, Avani Maseru Hotel, City Stay West, Scenery Guesthouse Stadium and Lapeng Ha Mamosa.

The Mokorotlo hat is a national symbol of Lesotho. This is a type of straw hat used for traditional Sotho clothing. It is made from an indigenous grass known as ‘leholi’ or ‘mosea’. An image of the Mokorotlo started appearing on Lesotho license plates as well as the country’s flag after independence. It is believed that the shape of the hat was inspired by Lesotho’s Mount Qiloane which has a conical shape. The hat is also known as ‘molianyeoe’ meaning, `he who executes judgment in court’ in Sesotho.

Adopted in the early 20th century, tribal chiefs began to wear the hat and sing a song called ‘mokorotlo’ at certain ceremonies. It was originally exclusively worn by males to gatherings. In 1950, new designs were made for women as well.

At Kingsway, Maseru, you will see a building shaped as a Basotho Hat. It offers a wide range of handicrafts like baskets and weavings produced in Lesotho. A very worthwhile stop in Lesotho to stock up on gifts and souvenirs. Free on-street parking is available in the area.

Adventures with Rafiki - Part II - The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho

Part 2 of unknown. Filmed over a 14,000km months' long trip through the heart (and heat) of southern Africa with our trusty Hilux, Rafiki.

We coerced poor Rafiki through thousands of kilometres of coast, mountains, desert, savannah and vast African heat. We set off from the Cape headed east South Africa, inland through Lesotho, continued to Kruger to meet Otto, and into Botswana where we left Hadley standing between the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. We carried on west to Namibia and down the harsh Atlantic coast back to South Africa where it all began.
