Is St. Maarten safe for visitors? That's a question that would require no hesitation in early 2017. However, the eastern Caribbean island of St. Maarten was devastated by hurricane Irma in September of 2017 and was somewhat slow to recover. Winds of up to 182 mph battered the island and torrential rains flooded most low-lying areas.
We were a bit hesitant at first when we booked a trip back in November of 2018 that included a stop in the popular cruise ship destination. We learned a lot about the island and the people in our visit to St. Maarten.

The island is recovering but the damage is noticeable throughout Philipsburg. A beautiful island which is well worth visiting and is one of our favorite places in the Caribbean

After Hurricane Irma: St. Maarten is Open for Business
St. Maarten was one of a handful of Caribbean islands to suffer significant damage from Hurricane Irma, which made landfall in September 2017. The cruise port was closed for three months, while recovery efforts were underway to get beaches, restaurants and other tourist attractions back up in running; affected islands relied on tourism to help get them back on their feet. We were one of the first to return to the port, after it opened in December 2017, during a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas. Here’s a look at what we saw during our visit.

Experiencing the Devastation of Hurricane Irma in St Maarten / St Martin
I saw hurricane destruction up close and personal for the first time in my life when I visited St. Maarten / St Martin.
When Hurricane Irma struck the island in September 2017, winds of 180 mph tore through the island, destroying everything it it's path. It wasn't bad enough dealing with Irma, but they had to deal with Hurricane Jose and Hurricane Maria in the following weeks.

Hurricane Irma hit St Maarten St Martin the 6th of September and destroyed many residential building, hotels and houses.
But the island is strong and everyday progress is made.
So visit St Maarten the Caribbean island.

On September 6th, a catastrophic category 5+ hurricane with wind speeds never measured before hit the island of St. Maarten - St- Martin. Here is the first look into our story of being stranded on Sint Maarten last September through the devastating Cat 5 storm Irma. We're excited to say that this glimpse is just the beginning of a larger project to provide awareness and support to disaster relief.

This is day 4 of our 7 Day Eastern Caribbean Cruise. Today we spent the day taking a very informative and scenic view of the island learning about the Dutch and French heritage that makes this island as unique as it is. Unfortunately, hurricane Irma 's effect still shows today. May God and all our prayers help them to a speedy recovery. After the tour we relaxed and enjoyed a few activities around the boat and ate all the food we could handle and played our new game we love to call most expensive things on the Oasis. Sint Maarten/Saint Martin in November (2018) is Beautiful!: Our Last Royal Caribbean Oasis Port
So far, the Caribbean has been amazing (even though it's Fall). Saint Maarten/Saint Martin was beautiful! Although we didn't get to go to the originally-planned beach, the Great Bay Beach was still gorgeous and was lots of fun. Again, if you want to save some extra cash, you can head over to the beaches on your own, which is what we did once again.
Since this was our last port from our Royal Caribbean Cruise, we decided to just take it easy and just relax on the beach. If you like this video, don't forget to like and SUBSCRIBE!

The Caribbean's legendary hedonistic vacation destination had temporarily lost some of its glamor when Category 5+ Hurricane Irma slammed into St. Maarten (SXM) on September 6th. The eye of the storm went right over the island and brought wind-speeds which have never been measured before!
The recovery of the island is in full swing, the spirit of our cosmopolitan community is returning. If you decide to visit during the next months, you will have a great time!
