Developing 35mm Color Film at Home: Tetenal Colortec C-41 (Snippet 30)

People have been recommending we start developing film at home for so long and we've heard you in the comments and are so grateful for that extra push to try something new!!

Before we got started, Lou did a lot of research and with the help of great video's like our friend Ed's ( he was able to figure out which supplies we would need to build our little home development station.

We haven't made a film video in a long time as we were a bit frustrated with having to outsource this part of the process and are so happy that we finally got around to figuring out how to own the full process now. It's cheaper, more fun, and you have way more control of the end result. We also put up a blog post with a bunch of the photos from this roll so if you want to see them check out

We're so inspired to get back out into Berlin and start shooting film again, so stay tuned because February we have a fun series coming your way :)

Question of the Week: Last week's video was all about The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and a few people mentioned that it would be fun to share what books we are reading in the comments, so.... let's start! Right now I'm reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami and Lou is reading Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa. Can't wait to hear what you have on your shelf!

How to Shoot 35mm Film (Story 1)

Film Camera: Canon A1 with a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens -- FujiColor Superia 200
Video Camera: Canon 5D3 with a 35mm Summicron F2 (1970) Leica lens

This is our first STORY in our new Snippet/Story style and we are so very excited to share it with you.

This week we tried to weave the beautiful experience of film photography with a bit of a how-to-video with the hopes of inspiring you to get out and capture your environment.

The entire experience of shooting film from choosing your film stock, to manually loading the film, to the sexy sound of winding the film after each photo, well it all just begs you to slow down, to focus on the moment at hand, and take it all in and then... the most important part... to stay present. No checking how the photo turned out, no re-taking the selfie, not even the need to see how many likes it got. Nope, a film camera gives you the luxury of hoping that you captured the moment and letting that be enough.

And while I can go on and on about the lessons that film has already taught me - and this was just my first roll ! - the main thing that making this story taught me is how lucky I am to have a partner as patient and thoughtful as Lou! His work ethic is unlike anyone I have ever met and the passion he pours into creating these beautiful moments each week never ceases to amaze me.

I'm grateful for this week's video for reminding me of time spent: hanging at second hand camera stores, capturing special moments with dear friends, and enjoying perfect moments of summer when you feel surrounded by love.

Developing B&W Film

I was given a 1957 Rollei magic II. It came with some very old Kodak Tri-X film. I exposed the one roll, as the others were already exposed. Before getting the darkroom going we went out and I shot some Ilford FP4 in my Leicas. I mixed up Kodak D-76 and Kodak Fixer to process the film.

Film Tutorial #2 Developing film

In the second tutorial we go over the entire process of developing black & white film.

How to Scan and Organize 35mm Film Negatives (Snippet 16)

We got a lot of questions about this so we thought we'd make a quick little tutorial on how we scan and organize our 35 film negatives. It's a pretty simple system once you set it up and it's been working really well for us so hopefully someone else will find this useful!

Shooting 35mm Film in Neukölln - Film February - Part 4 (Snippet 34)

This is the last video in our Film February series! It has been so much fun exploring different neighborhoods in Berlin each week and trying out different film stocks. This week we went to Neukölln and shot Portra 400.

We really hope that you have enjoyed the series and have been able to learn with me as I continue to get to know my Canon A-1 better and better. We appreciate all the support and love you've shown us in the comments. Focusing on capturing the city around us has definitely made our February better and now that the sun is peaking back into our life we can feel the city waking up from it's winter hibernation.

Favorite moments of this video:
- our surprise run-in with Bridget in Tempelhof (go check our her project Barter Barber:
- shooting portraits of our beautiful friend Eva (@evadawn_illustrations)

Favorite moments of the series:
- dogs outside grocery stores
- playing with reflections in water
- pretty faces and trees
- exploring our city with my main man

Question of the week: What has been your favorite part of Film February?

Shooting 35mm Film in Schöneberg - Film February - Part 1 (Snippet 31)

Welcome to our first edition of the four part series we call Film February!

We will be shooting a different roll of color film each week this month on our Canon A-1. This week we shot Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 and explored Schöneberg and I have to say the coolest thing that happened (spoiler alert!) was getting spotted on the street by Arianne and Pierre-Henri. We get to chat with so many of you here in the comments or over email, but to actually meet on the street and get to chat about life was such a special moment for Lou and I. We also loved getting to see the Gasometer covered in the thick fog.

Film February is all about pushing ourselves to keep exploring this city we call home even if it is freezing cold and has never ending bleak grey skies. It is already helping counteract our natural tendencies to hibernate this winter! It is also helping us to capture the city we love so dearly before we take off on our van journeys later this year.

Question of the Week:
What is one thing you have done this month to make you feel creative?

Shooting 35mm Film in Kreuzberg - Film February - Part 3 (Snippet 33)

This is definitely my favorite roll of film of the series yet!! Playing around with double exposures and getting to spend some time with friends made it a really special experience. (My friend Luisa's instagram is @luyanoms - go check out her photos!) I highly recommend anyone watching who has a analog camera to figure out how to take double exposures and start experimenting. I already have so many other ideas swirling in my mind of what I could do with layered textures, with a tripod which would allow for more static shots, or with mixing photos of daytime and nighttime.

If you're like me, it is very easy to remember to take photos when you're traveling. Everything is brand new and you want to remember the trip, but then when you are in your own home, own backyard, own neighborhood (in the case of this video!) well sometimes it doesn't seem like that special of a moment to capture, but that is when we forget how precious the space around us really is. It provides us a vehicle for so many of our experiences. And while travel does create some fantastic memories, so many more of our memories are made closer to home, so I am really happy we were able to shoot a roll in Kreuzberg and capture the neighborhood that we love. This week helped me remember how lovely it is to capture the spaces we find ourselves in most often.

Question of the Week: Have you ever taken double exposures? What two types of images are your favorite to combine? If you haven't what do you think would be a cool idea?

Was it all a dream? (Snippet 28)

We are back in Berlin! After over a month living at home--and some massive life moments--it feels great to be back in Berlin, and for the first time in two years it really does feel like vanlife is fast approaching. Until then, here's a little snippet Lou threw together today ; ) It's a short one but it definitely captures the current mood we're in!

London 35mm Film Shoot - Portraits of Strangers (Snippet 20)

Every roll of 35mm film I shoot on our Canon A-1 turns into an adventure. I try to think up goals for each roll, whether it's capturing a new city, or focusing on light, or my consistent goal of getting things in focus!! Well, this roll was a mix of a bunch of things and hope you stick around through the whole video because the second half gets interesting as we take to the street and start talking up strangers in London :)

Ever since our first film video where I took portraits of a bunch of our friends here in Berlin, I've been wanting to do more of just that - getting in front of people and trying to capture the energy of the moment. While I am still getting my feet underneath me as a hobby photographer, this was such a fun way to push my limits.

And for this week's question for the lovely souls who read these video descriptions: What is something this year that you've done that was out of your comfort zone??

Shooting 35mm Film in Mitte - Film February - Part 2 (Snippet 32)

Lou and I continue with our Film February series where we shoot a different roll of color film each week this month on our Canon A-1. This week we shot AgfaPhoto Vista plus 400 Color Negative Film and explored Mitte.

You can feel the history of this city as you walk around Mitte, looking at all the iconic monuments like the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and the TV Tower (which, sadly for this video hid from view behind thick grey skies!).

My favorite part of this area of the city is the dichotomy of new and old architecture. I think the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders Haus - the square building with the huge circular window directly on the Spree - was the most fun to photograph of the entire day. I was able to find a few different angles to capture the building and it was really fun to play around with the reflection in the Spree.

I have to admit though that trying to make buildings come alive in this grey, chilly weather has been a bit of a challenge! Looking forward to sharing our Kreuzberg adventures with you next Tuesday :)

Question of the Week: Have you ever tried being a tourist in your own city? What did you think? For me, being a tourist in Berlin makes me appreciate how culturally rich the city is. It's so easy to forget when you just move around in your normal neighborhoods, but then when you plop yourself down in the touristy area, and see all these people who are here on their vacation, taking the time to get the most they can on their week(end) away, well it makes me remember to take advantage of all the city has to offer!

Getting film developed

35mm film photography. So hipster...
Ok, back in August I was given an old film SLR camera. So of course I buy film for it. Here I am taking my first roll of film to get developed in over 10 years.

Intermission (Snippet 35)

Lou just finished the edit and its 9:12 on Tuesday night and I asked him how he's feeling and despite being exhausted from pushing through way more than is humanely possible to accomplish get this video out on time, he is sad. Sad to be ending this streak of videos we've created, sad to be taking a break from YouTube, but to be honest there is also a great deal of joy inside us that comes from letting go. We know that with space from our second home here on the internet there will be a great deal of time to move towards our dreams. We want to build our first home together and that takes a lot of focus and preparation, so we appreciate your support and understanding as we focus our energy elsewhere for the moment...

If you want to stay in touch with us (and we'd love that!!) please join our mailing list. You can sign up here:

We love creating here and hope to be back as soon as possible!

Much love,
Dana
