[4KHDR] Driving in Sweden and Denmark: E20 from Malmö to Copenhagen - The Øresund Bridge

In this video you can drive along on the E20 from Malmö to Copenhagen via the impressive Øresund bridge. Ever since watching an episode of National Geographic megastructures on this bridge as a kid, I have wanted to cross it. Finally, almost 20 years later, I crossed it and it did not disappoint ;-)

What was surprising as we approached the toll booth, is that the RFID device for toll that I had in the car for Norway actually worked here as well. The border between Sweden and Denmark is just towards the end of the bridge part. The tunnel part of the Øresund crossing is on the Danish side.

Opened in 2000, it was one of the largest if not the largest bridge and strait crossing in the world. The highest bridge pylons reach 204 meters and the crossing has a total length of over 7 kilometers. It features both highway and railway infrastructure, mitigating the travel time between both cities to just 15-20 minutes. It currently costs about 65 EUR to cross the bridge, a hefty price but there aren't really any other options out there.

There is also a Swedish series called 'The Bridge' that was named after this bridge. I can recommend it, it's called Bron / Broenn in the local languages.

The Öresund or Øresund Bridge (Danish: Øresundsbroen; Swedish: Öresundsbron; hybrid name: Øresundsbron) is a combined railway and motorway bridge across the Øresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. It is the longest in Europe with both roadway and railway combined in a single structure, running nearly 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the Swedish coast to the artificial island Peberholm in the middle of the strait. The crossing is completed by the 4 km (2.5 mi) Drogden Tunnel from Peberholm to the Danish island of Amager.

The bridge connects the road and rail networks of the Scandinavian Peninsula with those of Central and Western Europe. A data cable also makes the bridge the backbone of Internet data transmission between central Europe and Sweden. The international European route E20 crosses via road, the Øresund Line via railway. The construction of the Great Belt Fixed Link, connecting Zealand to Funen and thence to the Jutland Peninsula, and the Øresund Bridge have connected Central and Western Europe to Sweden by road and rail.

The bridge was designed by Jørgen Nissen and Klaus Falbe Hansen from Ove Arup and Partners, and Niels Gimsing and Georg Rotne.

The justification for the additional expenditure and complexity related to digging a tunnel for part of the way, rather than raising that section of the bridge, was to avoid interfering with air traffic from the nearby Copenhagen Airport, to provide a clear channel for ships in good weather or bad, and to prevent ice floes from blocking the strait. Construction began in 1995, with the bridge opening to traffic on 1 July 2000. The bridge received the 2002 IABSE Outstanding Structure Award.

BRIDGE:
At 7,845 m (4.875 mi), the bridge covers half the distance between Sweden and the Danish island of Amager, the border between the two countries being 5.3 km (3.3 mi) from the Swedish end. The structure has a mass of 82,000 t and supports two railway tracks beneath four road lanes in a horizontal girder extending along the entire length of the bridge. On both approaches to the three cable-stayed bridge sections, the girder is supported every 140 m (459 ft) by concrete piers. The two pairs of free-standing cable-supporting towers are 204 m (669 ft) high allowing shipping 57 m of head room under the main span, but most ships' captains prefer to pass through the unobstructed Drogden Strait above the Drogden Tunnel. The cable-stayed main span is 491 m long. A girder and cable-stayed design was chosen to provide the specific rigidity necessary to carry heavy rail traffic, and also to resist large accumulations of ice. The bridge experiences occasional brief closures during very severe weather, such as the St. Jude storm of October 2013.

It is capable of bearing vertical loads up to 96,000 kN in a longitudinal direction and up to 40,000 kN in transverse direction.

Vibration issues, caused by several cables in the bridge moving under certain wind and temperature conditions, were combatted with the installation of compression spring dampers installed in pairs at the centre of the cables. Two of these dampers were equipped with laser gauges for ongoing monitoring.

PEBERHOLM:
The bridge joins Drogden tunnel on the artificial island of Peberholm (Pepper Islet). The Danes chose the name to complement the natural island of Saltholm (Salt Islet) just to the north. Peberholm is a designated nature reserve built from Swedish rock and the soil dredged up during the bridge and tunnel construction, approximately 4 km long with an average width of 500 m. It is 20 m high.

DROGDEN TUNNEL:
The connection between Peberholm and Kastrup on Amager island, the nearest populated part of Denmark, is through the 4,050-metre (2.52 mi) long Drogden Tunnel (Drogdentunnelen). It comprises a 3,510 m (2.18 mi) immersed tube plus 270 m (886 ft) entry tunnels at each end. The tube tunnel is made from 20 prefabricated reinforced concrete segments – the largest in the world at 55,000 t each – interconnected in a trench dug in the seabed. Two tubes in the tunnel carry railway tracks, two carry roads and a small fifth tube is provided for emergencies. The tubes are arranged side by side.

Oresund Bridge: More than just a connection between Sweden and Denmark

The Öresund is the shortest sea route between the North and the Baltic Seas. For centuries it was a bone of contention for many maritime nations. But not all ships can sail through it, because the shipping channel is only eight metres deep in some places. This means that heavy commercial ships and fully laden tankers have to navigate the twists and turns of the Great Belt. Denmark and Sweden have been connected by the Oresund Bridge for ten years. The result is that Copenhagen and Malmö have almost merged.

Denmark & Sweden: E20 Øresund Bridge

A drive across the Øresund Bridge and tunnel between Denmark and Sweden. From Copenhagen to Malmö.

World's Most Unique Bridges and Tunnels. Amazing Engineering has come a long way from ramps & arches

Amazing Feats of Engineering To Cross (previously) Uncrossable Seas. The World's Most Amazing Road Water Crossings include The Eysturoy Tunnel (Eysturoyartunnilin) & Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge (HKZM Bridge)...

1. Eysturoyartunnilin was completed in 2020 in the Faroe Islands. The Eystoroy tunnel is almost 7 miles long, and it connects not two but three different places. How does it do that? They put an underwater intersection / roundabout / road circile in the middle!

2. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is 34 miles long, it’s the longest sea crossing in the world. It combines 20 miles of viaducts over the open water with 3 separate 1000+ foot bridges, a 4 mile undersea tunnel, and 4 artificial islands that connect them. Drivers also switch from left-hand to right-hand driving while on the bridge and then switch back at both ends.

3. The Bund Sightseeing tunnel connects two parts of Shanghai in style. It technically uses the same tunnel as the metro, but for about $10, you are treated to a light and sound show to make your crossing a lot more fun.

Hope that wasn’t boring! ;)

The underwater tunnel between Denmark and Sweden

THE ORESUND BRIDGE, ends overwater and continues underwater #oresundbridge #underwatertunnel #facts

The Oresund Bridge is a combination bridge and tunnel that connects Denmark and Sweden. Building it began in 1993. A tube tunnel of concrete segments was installed underwater and an artificial island was created to connect it to the bridge.

It's not just a road bridge, though - the 16km (10 miles) link across Oresund, a strait between Sweden and Denmark that's known for its rough weather, is also part tunnel and part island. It cost 30bn Danish krone ($4.3bn; £3bn) and was built in just five years, opening in June 2000.

At five miles in length, Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden is Europe's longest combined rail and road bridge.

The bridge connects the road and rail networks of the Scandinavian Peninsula with those of Central and Western Europe. A data cable also makes the bridge the backbone of Internet data transmission between central Europe and Sweden.

The Oresund Bridge, connecting Sweden with Denmark, ends overwater and continues underwater.
