Hamlet's Castle | The Exciting History of Kronborg Castle
Kronborg Castle in Denmark was one of the most fortified Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. But it's also known under a different name: Elsinore Castle from Hamlet.
Around the year 1600 William Shakespeare wrote a play called The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. All of the play takes place in Denmark, at a specific castle - and that castle is Kronborg Castle. Kronborg is located in the town of Helsingør, and is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe, and it’s been a UNESCO world heritage site since the year 2000.
In this video I walk you through the impressive castle, show you the original interior, and I also tell you of the history of the place - including how it fell into Swedish hands during the Dano-Swedish War of 1658 - 1660. But I also tell you of the castle's connections with Hamlet and Shakespeare, and of Hamlet performances that typically take place at the castle.
There are other legends about the castle, though. This castle is also the resting place of a mythical warrior called Holger, or Ogier, the Dane. He was a paladin at Charlemagne's court, a lover of Morgan le Fay, and he now sleeps in the catacombs underneath the castle - ready to rise to defend Denmark if his home country is ever in danger...

The 600-year-old Kronborg Castle sits at the edge of Denmark's northern shore, overlooking Sweden. A twenty-mile drive north of Copenhagen will take you straight to it.

About 50 minutes by train from Copenhagen, Helsingor is a great day trip. A visit to Kronborg Castle will delight, and the town itself is worth a look.

On this episode of Wandering we take a walk back through Danish history and visit the home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
We visited the catacombs in Kronborg Castle!
Kronborg Castle, located in Helsingør, Denmark, is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list.
It is also immortalized as Elsinore in Shakespeare's famous play, Hamlet.
We go around this castle almost every time we're in Denmark but this is the first time we got to go inside and it was definitely worth it!

Work began on the construction of this outstanding Renaissance castle in 1574, and its defences were reinforced according to the canons of the period's military architecture in the late 17th century. It has remained intact to the present day. It is world-renowned as Elsinore, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Il castello di Kronborg, in danese: Kronborg Slot, è una fortezza situata a Helsingør, in Danimarca. Sorge sulla punta estrema della Selandia, nella minima distanza tra la Danimarca e la Svezia. Qui lo stretto, largo soli 4 km, aggiunge un'importanza strategica alla costruzione. Tra le curiosità questo è il castello in cui Shakespeare ha ambientato l’Amleto. Kronborg Castle Dungeon, Denmark (Vlog!)
Hello! Here's a quick video of my day trip to Kronborg Castle. This was back in late January when the temperature was *cold* and little to no tourists. It's a big place to explore and have some fun in! There's also a library/ cafe on the street before where you can stop and get some coffee. It was awesome! If you go down to the dungeon which is labeled under the color black... make sure you bring a flashlight. IT IS DARK. Trust me... TY! LV U! :D
