Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Trek to Everest Base Camp Day 1 - Terrifying flight to Lukla the world most dangerous airport

Day 1 - Bhaktapur to -- Kathmandu Airport to -- Lukla Airport to -- Phakding

We took the hair raising and terrifying flight to Lukla Airport in Nepal
where the starts of our trek to Everest Base Camp. Our first stop is Phakding at 2652m / 8,701 ft

I experienced the world's most dangerous airport landings and the precious wonderful feeling of seeing the Himalayan mountain range where most of the highest mountains in the world are located.

The landing and take-off strip in Lukla is very short. The airport operates at an altitude of 8,000 feet (2,438m) and has virtually no modern air traffic control features. Not even lights, and very little electric power at all.

Days 1 & 2 Everest Base Camp Trek | Kathmandu | Amazing Flight to Lukla! | Episode 1 of 4

1st of 4 videos of EBC trek - filmed Oct. 2021. A world like we've never seen before! Come with us on this 13 day journey! This is a luxury trek which means we stay in nicer lodges with our own bathroom on the lower part of the mountain, sometimes with electric blankets. There is no heat in any of the rooms we stayed in anywhere on the trek. We share our journey, food, lodging, and more. What an incredible place!

We used Adventures Within Reach for this trek. We have used them for most of our worldwide adventures and they are excellent! We highly recommend them!

Amazing helicopter ride to Lukla - Everest Base Camp Trek Day 1

This helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Lukla was unexpected, but wow! All my flights go cancelled so I completely let go and got a last minute ticket to fly to Lukla via helicopter to begin my Everest Base Camp trek!

Once arriving in Lukla Airport, I met my guide and we walked for 3 hours in the dark to Phakding which was the location of my first teahouse.

I very quickly learned that Nepal was so natural, rural and beautiful, a complete contrast from Kathmandu, and seeing it from the helicopter like that really put the scale of the Himalayas into perspective.

BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

Hi, I'm Leah! In October 2019 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Nepal to complete the Everest Base Camp Trek. I was lucky that my dad was able to join me on this incredible journey! I hope you enjoy this #travelvlogs and join in the adventure!

A Flight to Mount Everest + World’s Most Dangerous Airport - Lukla

Our helicopter was one of the first to take off at sunrise around 6:20am from Kathmandu Airport. There are many helicopter operators offering tours to see the majestic mountains in Nepal but there’s only a small window of season to do this. I’d recommend going in April or October when the weather is at its clearest and not so cold.

Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest. There is no road so no car can get there. A flight to Lukla is 25 minutes on a fixed-wing airplane or 40 mins by helicopter. We arrived there at 7am.

We took off again after refueling and headed to Mt Everest, on the way we passed Namche Bazar, Syangboche airstrip, Khumbu Icefall…

Mount Everest is the one with the sharp peak with snow blowing at the top. We were almost at 20,000 ft but Mt Everest stood really tall from where our helicopter was. We were trying to get up to Camp 2 of Mt Everest which is the absolute limit of the helicopter.

We eventually landed at Kala Patthar. I was so frantically taking photos and videos and started to use the oxygen supply from the helicopter. Our next stop is the pristine Gokyo Lake. On the way, we saw the world’s highest glacier, Khumbu Glacier. It really amazes me how close we fly to those mountain terrains. After a brief stop on the lake, we headed towards the world’s highest hotel, hotel Everest view for breakfast.

The whole trip took about 5 hours. The cost of doing it is about $1200 per person sharing on the helicopter. Helicopters don’t just bring tourists, they also bring cargo and bring down sick and fatigue trekkers from the mountain down on a daily basis.

Way Point of our helicopter flight:

1. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)
2. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
3. Namche Bazar (11,290 ft / 3,440m)
4. Syangboche (12,402 ft / 3,780m)
5. Khumbu Icefall (17,999 ft / 5,486m)
6. Mt Everest (29,031 ft / 8,849m)
7. Kala Patthar (18,519 ft / 5,644m)
8. Cho La Pass (17,782 ft / 5,420 m)
9. Gokyo Ri (17,575 ft / 5,357m)
11. Hotel Everest View (12,729ft / 3,880m)
13. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
14. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)

Trekking to Everest Base Camp from Start to Finish - Nepal March 2023

FAQ: we trekked MARCH 20-31, 2023.

Hiking Everest Base Camp with my husband and in-laws was both incredible & challenging. The trek was a bit tougher than I imagined, but not impossible. I wanted to share a realistic portrayal, so even though I have a few cringe moments in this video, I wanted to be sure to communicate my honest experience hiking EBC. We experienced freezing temperatures, slush and snow, as well as witnessed the most beautiful sunrise of our lives. Altitude sickness is also not a joke, so trek safely, slowly, and be sure to get travel insurance!

We came home full of memories from our time in Nepal. Our trekking guide Karan and our porters, Harka & Rajan, all local to Nepal, made our experience & we cannot imagine a better trip without them. We are forever grateful for them to share their beautiful country with us and be such positive lights in this world.

Nepal is full of breathtaking mountain ranges, and I would perhaps recommend taking the paths less traveled. Everest Base Camp is a bucket list trek for sure, but there are many other options in Nepal too, so I encourage you to hire a local trekking company & check those out as well.

If you made it this far- this video took my channel to the monetization stage & I just want to say how grateful I am. Unfortunately there was a song that needed to be switched out, so you may have noticed a very weird music transition. Regardless, thanks for being with me on this Youtube learning journey. I appreciate the support.

Everest Base Camp Trek Day 1 Flight From Kathmandu to Lukla

————————————————————————————————
The first day of my Everest Base Camp trek started early for me.
Fortunately and unfortunately the infamous 30 minutes flight from Kathmandu airport to Lukla was not dramatic as many youtube video makes it out to be.. at least for my flight.
It was loudly but otherwise pretty stable and comfy. :)

The first day of trek was quite alright for me. It wasn't too tiring and I found. nice lodge to spent my first night in.
The temperature did drop drastically during the night and I had to bring out my 0 degreee sleeping bag in order to sleep well.
It's a first taste of how cold the nights will be for the next 12 nights.

Everest Base Camp Trek Day 1 - Kathmandu to Lukla to Phakding

Everest Base Camp Trek, our day 1 from Lukla to Phakding! We have many challenges... from our flight to Lukla from Kathmandu being delayed over and over, to food poisoning, to weather challenges! I share with you the first day of our incredible trek experience, the helicopter ride, and our accommodations in Phakding.

Everest Base Camp Trek - Day 1 - Kathmandu flight to Lukla (2,800m) and hike to Phakding (2,652m)

DAY 1 - KATHMANDU 1,350m/4,428ft TO LUKLA FLIGHT 2,800m/9184ft AND PHAKDING 2,652m/8,698ft

Walking Distance: 8km (4 hours)

200m Descent 50m Ascent

We were up at 4.15am, the electricity was off, but the hotel provides emergency low level lighting. By 5am we were all in the taxi, with bags strapped on the roof, through the empty streets to the airport. I was apprehensive of the flight to Lukla airport with good reason. Lukla is described as one of the most dangerous airports in the world, as the plane lands on a very short runway surrounded on three sides by cliff faces.

Over the years there have been a few fatal crashes, the worst being in 2008 where 16 trekkers and 2 crew members died when the plane hit the cliff. We boarded the twin engine plane at 6.15am for the first flight of the day, the weather tending to be better for flying before 9am.The stewardess issued us with cotton wool for our ears, and sweets to eat and securely fastened herself in for the trip. The journey takes 35 minutes, flying over numerous valleys, however if the plane had a sudden problem there would be nowhere to land! We were all very relieved when the plane landed safely, we disembarked looking at the memorial to previous flight passengers and crew who had died there.

Lukla is at 2,800m/9184ft and the main jumping off point that the majority on this trek take. If not wishing to take the plane an alternative would be to take a bus from Kathmandu to either Jiri or Phaplu then trekking for about 5 days, to arrive in Lukla. However, this option is not that popular, even though it would avoid the flight and aid acclimatisation.

We met our friendly Sherpa guide Pasang, and the porters who would be carrying our bags and accompanying us for the trip. All were very friendly. After some breakfast at The Nest at Lukla we started our trek, the group was buzzing with excitement to start our trek. It was a truly beautiful walk with a couple of suspension bridges over rivers - no time to be scared. Made more frightening when, herds of yaks are driven onto the bridge at the same time!! After 3 hours of walking we checked into the first of many tea houses, this one owned by Pasang and his wife. It was lovely inside, with real wood floors, a shared outside toilet and basin, with a mirror!!. After a lunch of vegetables and rice, we were treated to a walk with the guide up the valley to an old monastery which was being repaired after the earthquake. Back at the tea hut at 3pm, resting before an early dinner and early to bed.

Everest Base Camp Trek - Day 1 - Flying into Phakding and Trekking to Monjo | Trek Tips

➤ In this video, the group begins the trek to Everest Base Camp! When poor weather shut down the Lukla airport, our guests luckily boarded helicopters to Phakding (8,600') and trekked about 3 hours into Monjo (9,300') for their first night in teahouse lodges in the Khumbu Valley en route to Everest Base Camp.
