The Celts: A Sceptical History - Simon Jenkins

The history of the Celts is the history of a misnomer. There has never been a distinct people, race or tribe claiming the name of Celtic, though remnants of different languages and cultures remain throughout Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall. The word keltoi first appears in Greek as applied generally to aliens or ‘barbarians’ - and theories of Celticism continue to fuel many of the prejudices and misconceptions that divide the peoples of the British Isles to this day. Often seen as unimportant or irrelevant adjuncts to English history, in The Celts Simon Jenkins offers a compelling counterargument. This is a fascinating and timely debate on who the Celts really were - or weren’t - and what their legacy should be in an increasingly dis - United Kingdom.

Simon Jenkins is the author of the bestselling A Short History of England (Profile), England’s Thousand Best Churches and England’s Thousand Best Houses, Britain’s 100 Best Railway Stations and most recently A Short History of Europe. From 2008 to 2014 he was the chairman of the National Trust, and the former editor of The Times and Evening Standard and a columnist for the Guardian.

Michael Hodges - Neolithic Calendars & British Folklore - FULL LECTURE

Subscribe here: - - Filmed at the Megalithomania Conference in Glastonbury, UK on 23rd May 2009 by Nautilus AV Productions. A detailed look at how megalithic structures were used to correctly time the planting of crops and how many of these technologies were recorded in Folklore. He has also identified a number of long distance alignments local to his home in Dorset, that appear to be Neolithic farming calendars and have been published in his book 'Here be Dragons'. He has found similar alignments on the Mendips and on the Isles of Wight and Purbeck. His book 'St. Catherine's Hill' also identified some long distance Roman signal routes which could have been based on prehistoric alignments.

After a long and varied career, Michael was elected as a councillor and served as Mayor of a Borough and became involved in local history and archaeology. Michael began writing on local history in the 1980's and became interested in alignments and folklore. He has been chairman of the Society of Ley Hunters and the Dorset Earth Mysteries Group; also of the Christchurch Local History Society which with well over 300 members is the largest of its kind in Dorset. Michael serves on the Dorset History Forum and the Dorset Archaeological Committee and represents the latter with Wessex Archaeology.

Brexit: A View From a Drawbridge

The UK is isolating itself from the rest of Europe and the rest of the world. Many great things are happening in Europe. Brexit doesn't have to mean we close the drawbridge on Europe and the rest of the world. We need to fight against our island mentality - for our own sake.

What happened to Kentish & why schools don't teach it: The English Language in Kent from 597 to 2022

A livestreamed talk as part of Winchester Heritage Open Days 2022.

A story to take us back over sixteen hundred years - involving accents, dialects and even food. Join Professor Christopher Mulvey of the English Project and the University of Winchester to examine the demise of royal Kentish.

Every county has its English language story to tell, and among the most interesting are the stories of Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Hampshire, and Kent. A thousand years ago, they were heartlands of the royal dialects of Old English: Northumbrian, Mercian, West Saxon, and Kentish. Northumbrian evolved to become the royal dialect of Edinburgh; Mercian evolved to become the royal dialect of Westminster. West Saxon evolved to become the republican dialect of Virginia.

On past Heritage Open Days, the English Project has told those stories. Now is time to ask what happened to royal Kentish? Why is it nowhere a socially-dominant dialect? There was a chance that it might have become the international dialect of printed English. That did not happen. Why not? The answer involves Saint Berta, Saint Augustine, William Caxton and Tracey Emin.
