Timor-Leste - Country Life

We experienced traditional post-war country life in Timor-Leste when we made a 4x4 tour through the eastern part of the country. We visited friendly villages, met the nicest people, drove through beautiful countryside, crossed rivers because of collapsed bridges and experienced horrible roads. Much road improvement work was going on. One night we spent with a local family. A visit to Dili, the capital, gives a good impression of Timor-Leste, but this countryside trip gives a whole dimension to a visit to Timor-Leste.

Dili
Capital of Timor-Leste
Dili is the capital city of Timor-Leste, or East Timor, on the country's north coast. The large Cristo Rei de Dili statue is on a hilltop east of the city, with views of the bay. IN A HEART OF TIMOR-LESTE: Aileu, Maubisse and local life on a day trip from Dili

I left Dili at 8:00 AM and headed south to the highlands. Dare Memorial, a museum about Timor-Leste during WWII was closed and I proceeded to the city of Aileu, the center of pro-independece party Fretilin during Indonesian occupation, where Portuguese fort and library can still be found and explored.
After lunch at Projeto Montanha Restaurant, next stop was Maubisse town in Ainaro Municipality with Portuguese hotel (Pousada de Maubisse) on the hill, overlooking the town.
On a way back I found traditional Timorese houses in the rural areas of Timor-Leste.

There are officially 193 countries in the world today. Chances are, you don't know all of them, and chances are even better you don't know Timor-Leste (East Timor). A tiny, majority Catholic nation located right in the middle of the majority Muslim Indonesian archipelago, it became the newest country in Asia in 2002. But to get independence, it had to go through some real shiiiii...

I arrived there on the day of a solar eclipse. Outside of the rare Australian who got on the wrong flight to Bali, tourists don't come here. In fact, it's hard to even take out money. This was gonna be a weekend of adventure, and I had no idea what to expect. Enjoy the ride.

In Dili, the capital of East Timor - Officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste,Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km2 (5,794 sq mi). The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) resisted a Timorese Democratic Union (UDT) coup attempt in August 1975, and unilaterally declared independence on 28 November 1975. Fearing a communist state within the Indonesian archipelago, the Indonesian military launched an invasion of East Timor in December 1975. Indonesia declared East Timor its 27th province on 17 July 1976. The UN Security Council opposed the invasion and the territory's nominal status in the UN remained as non-self-governing territory under Portuguese administration.

The East Timorese guerrilla force (Forças Armadas da Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste, Falintil) fought a campaign against the Indonesian forces from 1975 to 1998. José Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, second President of East Timor The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and an East Timor solidarity movement grew in Portugal, the Philippines, Australia, and other Western countries. Following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto, a UN-sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal allowed for a UN-supervised popular referendum in August 1999. A clear vote for independence was met with a punitive campaign of violence by East Timorese pro-integration militia with the support of elements of the Indonesian military. With Indonesian permission, an Australian-led multi-national peacekeeping force (INTERFET) was deployed until order was restored. On 25 October 1999, the administration of East Timor was taken over by the UN through the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET).The Constitution of the Democratic Republic of East Timor came into force and East Timor was recognised as independent.
Timor's indigenous Austronesian and Melanesian cultures. East Timorese culture is heavily influenced by Austronesian legends. For example, East Timorese creation myth has it that an ageing crocodile transformed into the island of Timor as part of a debt repayment to a young boy who had helped the crocodile when it was sick. As a result, the island is shaped like a crocodile and the boy's descendants are the native East Timorese who inhabit it. The phrase leaving the crocodile refers to the pained exile of East Timorese from their island. East Timor is currently finalising its dossiers needed for nominations in the UNESCO World Heritage List, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, UNESCO Creative Cities Network, UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Network. The country currently has one document in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, namely, On the Birth of a Nation

Portuguese legacy and RICH HISTORY of a small Asian capital: exploring Dili, Timor-Leste

I've spent a day on November 6, 2022 exploring Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, learning its rich history while admiring Portuguese colonial legacy.
Started my walk at the Government Palace, I walked to Motael Church and took a taxi to Timor Plaza. In the evening I visited Colmera neighborhood.
The other day, on November 9, 2022, I visited Santa Cruz cemetery to learn about how some sad events changed the history of the country towards independence.
