After a knocking on the rear of my BMW 118D it finally identified its self by failing totally... rear drive shaft replacement taking about 45 minutes and costing me £116 ........ hope it helps

Video of the rear differential to try and see if I could understand where the loud Clunk noise comes from when shifting from park-reverse-drive or from a dead stop to start moving. It turned out to be the rubber bushing at whats called the final drive mount

This issue ended up being a broken pinion gear inside the diff. The solution for me was replacing the differential.

The problem ended up being a broken pinion gear in the differential. I swapped out the entire center section and the problem was completely solved, then I opened up the old one and found the broken tooth from the pinion gear.
