Turtledog Hammock Stands DIY - Cross County Construction

I hate tent camping so Scott decided we needed to try out hammock camping, but we would need a hammock stand. Unfortunately, many state and national parks do not allow you to attach your hammock to trees. Plus there are many parks that do not have any trees to attach your hammock to. So, what are we supposed to do?

Scott found hammock stands at a big box outdoor store but did not like the price so he decided to find out how to build some. He found the Turtledog Hammock Stand plans and proceeded to try one out. It worked out so well, he made a second one. Watch our video today and see just how easy it was!

Turtle dog stand

This video describes how to build , set up and use a turtle dog stand for hammock camping. Turtle dog stands are a useful alternative to hammock camping in situations where there are not suitable trees or in situations that you are not allowed to hang hammocks from trees. If you already have a similar turtle dog stand I made a modification to this design that I have found to be really nice. I'm putting a time stamp to the part in the video that shows that modification if your just interested in that.
5:25 is where my modification on this design can be found.

DIY Hammock Stand

I had some conduit so I just got the bolts at the supply house. I would go with 4 1/2 inch or 5 next time. The 1 inch EMT is strong and I would say might hold up 300lbs (maybe). You will need to judge for yourself. Be careful, while one person can set it up,a helping hand can keep you from bending your lower bolts as I did.
Now, for some paint and end caps to keep the dirt out of the conduit. Take your time building, I spent about 40 minutes.
The conduit can cost $10 to $ 15 each. The eye Hammock Sbolts were $4.

Hammock Stand made for camping.

We purchased this Hammock Stand that is very portable a little over a year ago. It is a great addition to our car camping essentials. Sometimes there are no trees to tie onto and with this, it won't matter. Weighing in at around 25 pounds and with a zippered carrying bag, we have put this piece of equipment to use many times. The stand is easy to load up and has minimal parts. There is enough room in the bag for our hammock as well as some other things if needed.

Here are some links to the Hammock stand and the hammock if you need one.

DIY Camping Gear - Indoor Hammock Stand and Hammock Made from Tablecloth

Our number one question at Two Weeks in a Hammock is about our gear. This DIY hammock stand is made with 2x4 boards and some simple hardware. The DIY hammock is made from a tablecloth. Enjoying our hammock at home is a great way to get extra use out of our gear. The hammock stand is also used for testing new DIY hammocks as Vince builds them.

I wanted a backyard hammock but didn't have usable trees. So I built a hammock stand that is fairly portable.

HAMMOCKS - The three big mistakes people often make

When a hammock is purchased, they usually do not come with any instructions. When I first purchased a hammock, I thought like most people. Find two trees, attach it, and then lay in it. Through trial and error, I finally found the best way to hang a hammock and to lay in a hammock. This video is how to hang a hammock and how to properly lay in a hammock.
