LESOTHO: The Country Located ENTIRELY inside of South Africa

Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence. It is a country in Southern Africa with an area of over 30,000 square kilometers and a population of about 2 million people. It was previously a British Protectorate. Lesotho gained independence on October 4th 1966 and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and Southern African Development Community(SADC). Maseru is its capital and largest city. ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates to ‘The Land of the Sotho’. Its people are referred to as Basotho and its currency is Lesotho loti and South African rand.

Lesotho’s position is unusual. It is the Southernmost landlocked country in the world. It is the largest of the world’s three independent states completely surrounded by another country’s territory. San Marino and Vatican City are the other two states. Lesotho is also the only state of its kind outside of the Italian peninsula and is a microstate as well. The country is simply an enclave.

In this video, you are going to discover Lesotho through many facades, so please watch it until the end.

Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

The Fisherman's Cottage

Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life as you embark on a getaway to The Fisherman's Cottage, located near the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. This family- and pet-friendly haven is your ticket to tranquility, just 15 km from Mooi River and 25 km from the charming Nottingham Road.

Embark on an unforgettable escape at The Fisherman's Cottage with fantastic rates for this 8-sleepr lakeside gem. During the in-season, revel in the tranquility for R6000 per night. For midweek getaways from Sunday to Thursday, out-of-season bliss awaits at R5000 per night. Make your weekends exceptional with a stay from Friday to Sunday at the year-round rate of R6000 per night. As the year draws to a close, experience the pinnacle of luxury from 01 December 2024 to mid-January 2025, with our high season rate at R6500 per night:

Now, let's delve deeper into the heart of nature's canvas by embarking on an enchanting kayaking experience. As you gracefully glide across the pristine waters of the dam, feel the gentle rhythm of your paddle creating ripples, echoing the whispers of tranquility that surrounds you.

Fort Nottingham Road

Roadtripping through South Africa will leave you speechless. Leaving The Fisherman's Cottage in Mooi River, we ventured into the heart of nature's grandeur in the Suzuki Jimny 5 Door.  Gravel roads, mountain views, and 160 km of  adventure with a view via Fort Nottingham Road and the Underberg! This is a route that you have to experience!

Sani Pass

Embark on an epic journey through the legendary Sani Pass, connecting KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho in South Africa. Once a mule track, now a thrilling mountain pass between the Sani Pass Border Post in South Africa and the Lesotho Border Post. The elevation gains are incredible reaching 2873m. At this altitude, the views are spectacular. Traversing the famous Sani Pass crossing river beds and tackling loose rocky terrain, the Suzuki Jimny 5 Dorr handled the challenges in 4H most of the timewithout breaking a sweat. 4L was only needed on some of the steep rocky switch backs towards the top of Sani Pass.

Maliba Lodge, Lesotho

Exact location:

We discovered the charm of Maliba Lodge, Lesotho's exclusive 5-star ecolodge nestled in Tsehlanyane National Park. From luxurious stays to self-catering options, it caters to all, making it the ultimate retreat for families, friends, and couples. We stayed in the Mountain View Rooms for R1100 per night (for 2 people). The views are second to none! Nestled in the northern part of the Maluti Mountains, we dined at the restaurant, relaxed in the private lounge and soaked in the gorgeous Mountain View’s from the deck.

More than a getaway, Maliba Lodge embodies a vision of empowering local Basotho through eco-tourism, fostering community growth and contributing to education, economy, and society.
Maliba Lodge is situated only 48km from the Caledonspoort Border Post making it highly accessible for those travelling from South Africa.

We embarked on a soul-refreshing hike and would you believe it's just a short drive from Clarens, South Africa (less than 2 hours). Hiking through the enchanting Maluti Mountains at Maliba Lodge in Lesotho, the 4.7 km trail unveils breathtaking landscapes and leads us to the pristine Holomo Waterfall.

Lesotho (route from Sani Pass, South Africa)

We embarked on a breathtaking journey across Lesotho, the Southern African Mountain Kingdom. In the Suzki Jimny 5 -door, we conquered the Tlaeng Pass, the highest road in Southern Africa at 3240m, via the A1 from Sani Pass, South Africa.

Our adventure unfolded with lively dances among the locals, the sun tenderly kissing the towering mountains, weaving through picturesque villages, encountering sheep strolling the roads, and climaxing with a mesmerizing fire sunset.

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

A Journey through Rural Lesotho | Travel Documentary

Lesotho Kingdom in the Sky. On this episode of Adventure Calls we travel through Rural Lesotho in a rented 4WD Nissan which had been outfitted for true adventure. We would go horse trekking deep in the Lesotho mountains, visit one of the world tallest waterfalls and drive through the roughest terrains imaginable towards South Africa. We also got an opportunity to donate school materials which was donated by fans, friends and family.

You can learn more about the Malealea Development Trust here where you can also donate to those in need

Lesotho was our very first travel documentary that we filmed.

Lesotho is a fantastic place to visit and a place we highly recommend. If you stay longer and plan to drive around the more rural areas you should highly consider bringing or renting a good 4WD car (the cheapest and easiest option is in Johannesburg, South Africa). Many places are inaccessible without.

We hope you will enjoy this video and please subscribe to our channel for more adventures around the world. Please leave any comments and questions below. We love to interact with our viewers :)
