How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods ????

HOW TO WINTER IN CANADIAN WILDERNESS

We've escaped to the wilderness & we're building our home at a cabin in the woods ... a phrase that was very fun to say in the beautiful fall weather in Canada BUT how are we coping with these cold, winter days? Here we were thinking that the renovations to our cabin were going to be our biggest challenge with this project. We've quickly learned that keeping warm *AND STAYING SANE* while living in the woods alone will be our biggest hurdle yet!

We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! This week we share our very Canadian morning routine of taking an ice bath in the lake (inspired by Yes Theory's recent episode with Wim Hof) , then move onto a neglected project of insulating the loft and paneling the ceiling. Then we're off to split wood to keep us warm and try to help keep some of our homeless warm too!

This week:
✔️ Spray foam insulation throughout cabin (including crawl space)
✔️ New windows for sun-room
✔️ DIY Metal roof installation

Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! This week we get our biggest snowstorm yet and simultaneously have the cabin spray foamed for some much-needed insulation. We also transform our screened-in porch by adding Lexan sheets over the windows so we can enjoy the room (and more importantly the VIEW) year-round!! And last we become roofers and tackle the very scary job of replacing our roof on the very steep screened-in porch.

FIXER UPPER!! Abandoned Little Cabin

Found this abandoned little cabin out in the Mojave Desert. It appears that someone is trying to fix it up and use as a shooting cabin. There was some fairly new stuff inside.
BUT, you have to see the very end; I did my part to cleaning up the desert.

Nautilus Motor Inn - Woods Hole - Buckminster Fuller Geodesic Dome

Filmed October 2019. The oldest extant Buckminster Fuller designed geodesic dome in the world is on this site.

The hotel has unfortunately has been abandoned and let fall into ruin – it will be demolished.

Completed in the summer of 1954 by Fuller and his students to serve as the dining room for the Nautilus Hotel in Woods Hole. The hotel is an accomplished if modest modern structure designed by architect Gunnar Peterson, an accomplished early Cape cod modernist , who reached out to Fuller for the design of the dining pavilion. The Dome has been abandoned for a number of years and its condition is deteriorating – though it has proven surprisingly resilient considering the delicacy of its construction.

The geodesic dome at the Nautilus Motor Inn was built in 1953 by internationally known modernist architect and mathematician R. Buckminster Fuller and owned by late Falmouth architect E. Gunnar Peterson. The structure originally housed the popular Dome Restaurant, but has been vacant since 2002. In December 2016, the 5.4-acre property was sold to a local developer and is slated to be redeveloped into age-restricted townhouses. Current plans are to restore the geodesic dome to its original condition.

Longfellow Design-Build, a local developer, bought the entire Nautilus parcel – including the dome – and The Dome at Woods Hole, a non-profit constituted to try to save and restore the Dome, have been trying for a couple of years to come to an agreement that would give the non-profit control of the Dome and enough land around it to ensure its survival and re-birth as a community resource of some sort.

As the negotiations with Longfellow have broken down of late, the developer is proposing an over-scaled highly historicizing condominium complex which would “save” the dome, but would use up all of the land around it, placing it directly adjacent to the condominium. In addition, the developer is proposing his own “preservation plan” for the building based upon a hastily commissioned, superficial analysis of the structure that as we understand it, risks the possibility of doing irreparable damage to this delicate structure.

Lockdown Project Autumn 2020 - Toyota HiAce Conversion

This is my conversion of a Toyota Reguis HiAce van into a self contained campervan. Here in New Zealand there are strict compliance regulations to gain a self self-containment certificate.

I picked up the van as the country went into lockdown and spent the next five weeks working on it for a couple of hours a day. I was limited to the tools and materials that I had as all the shops were closed, hence some of the use of painted pieces of MDF. The rough total cost of the conversion was around $1200. Well worth shopping around for things as it can serious reduce the cost.
