Μπήκαμε στο Κονγκό περιμένοντας πως θ' αντιμετωπίσουμε την τρομακτική κατάσταση που επικρατεί στη γείτονα χώρα, τη Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία του Κονγκό. Προς έκπληξή μας, συναντήσαμε μόνο φιλικούς αστυνομικούς κι ανθρώπους με μια ευγένεια που μας είχε λείψει! Η οδήγηση στους ερημικούς χωματόδρομους που διασχίζουν την παρθένα ζούγκλα ήταν ιδιαίτερα απολαυστική, αν και δύσκολη. Κάπου εκεί διασχίσαμε τον ισημερινό κι επιτέλους γλιτώσαμε απ' τις βροχές!

When we entered Congo, we expected to face the horrible situation which exists in the neighboring country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Surprisingly, we met only friendly policemen and people with a politeness that we had missed! Riding on the dirt roads which cross the virgin jungle was a highlight, despite it was rough. Those days we also crossed the Equator and we finally escaped from the rainy season!

Με την ευκαιρία, εγώ έπιασα δουλειά στο εστιατόριο της ελληνικής κοινότητας του Lubumbashi! Πάντα ήθελα να ζήσω για λίγο στην Αφρική και ήταν μια ενδιαφέρουσα εμπειρία...

By the chance, I got a job in the restaurant of the Hellenic community in Lubumbashi! I always wanted to live for a while in Africa. It was definitely an interesting experience...

Mozambique is a country that is close to my heart… I stayed away from the touristy south and visited the unexplored north, which until recently was plagued with conflicts. It was there that I discovered pristine landscapes, exotic beaches and people who were sincere and friendly. I felt as if I had found a hidden and unknown paradise!

Επισκέφτηκα τα άκρως ενδιαφέροντα, εγκαταλειμμένα αδαμαντωρυχεία του Kolmanskop, αλλά και το δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο φαράγγι του κόσμου. Κάπου εκεί, όμως, η μοτοσυκλέτα μου έπαψε να λειτουργεί όπως θα έπρεπε...

Going on with my adventure in dreamlike Namibia, I headed south through off-road routes in the dry and deserted landscapes. I visited the really interesting, abandoned diamond mines of Kolmanskop, as well as the second largest canyon in the world. Unfortunately, it was there where my motorcycle stopped working properly...

Αν κι η Νιγηρία ήταν η πιο επικίνδυνη χώρα που έπρεπε να διασχίσουμε, γνωρίσαμε ενδιαφέροντες ανθρώπους και κάναμε φίλους. Τα χρήματα που μας έκλεψαν κάποιοι αστυνομικοί, τελικά τα έβγαλα παίζοντας σε μια ταινία του Nollywood! Φεύγοντας απ' αυτήν τη χώρα, τα συναισθήματά μας ήταν ανάμεικτα, αλλά σίγουρα νιώσαμε μια ανακούφιση που την αφήναμε πίσω μας...

Despite Nigeria was the most dangerous country we had to cross, we met some interesting guys and we made friendships. The money that some immigration officers stole from us were earned when I acted in a Nollywood movie! Leaving this country, our feelings were mixed but we definitely felt quite relieved when we were out of it...

Burkina Faso was a nice surprise for us due to both its natural beauty and the good friends we met there. In March, however, the weather became too hot. So, after one month in this country, it was time for us to move south again...

Η μικρή κι άγνωστη Γουινέα-Μπισάου, με το πορτογαλικό αποικιακό της παρελθόν, διαφέρει από τις γειτονικές της χώρες. Για πρώτη φορά στην Αφρική μέναμε σε πόλεις χωρίς ρεύμα και τρεχούμενο νερό. Μας αποζημίωσαν, όμως, οι φιλικοί κάτοικοί της κι η διάσχιση της σαβάνας μέσα από όμορφες, εκτός δρόμου διαδρομές!

The small and unknown Guinea-Bissau, with its Portuguese colonial past, differs from its neighbours. It was the first time in Africa that we were staying in cities without electricity and running water. However, we were compensated by the friendly locals and the crossing of the savannah through beautiful, off-road routes!

Οι εκτός δρόμου διαδρομές σε χωματόδρομους και κυρίως στα ατελείωτα μονοπάτια της χώρας, κέρδισαν την καρδιά μου!

Tanzania has it all: huge national parks packed with wild animals, exotic beaches with crystal clear waters, like the ones in Zanzibar, as well as emerald green mountains, such as Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain! The country’s off-road routes through dirt roads, but mainly through endless single tracks, won me over!

Η καταπράσινη Ουγκάντα με μάγεψε με τα υπέροχα, τροπικά της τοπία, τα δάση, τα ποτάμια, τους καταρράκτες, αλλά και τον πολιτισμό του λαού της. Είχα την ευκαιρία να κάνω σαφάρι και να θαυμάσω τ' άγρια ζώα από τη σέλα της μοτοσυκλέτας μου, αλλά και ν' απολαύσω το rafting στα ορμητικά νερά του Νείλου, κοντά στις πηγές του!

The emerald green Uganda enchanted me with its magnificent tropical scenery, its forests, its rivers and waterfalls, as well as the civilisation of its nation. I had the chance to go on a safari on my motorbike and marvel at the wild animals, while I also went rafting in the Nile’s fast-flowing waters, near its source!

Rwanda, a geographically small state, is called the “land of a thousand hills”, while it is also termed “the Switzerland of Africa”, as it is a clean country, where the laws are being implemented. It is a well organised and orderly country, something rare in this continent. Its recent history, however, has been tragic and the genocide trauma is still fresh.

Μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη ήταν και οι κάτοικοι αυτής της χώρας, που δεν έζησαν το απαρτχάιντ κι αυτό φαίνεται στη φιλική συμπεριφορά τους.

I've had my eye on the small mountain Kingdom of Lesotho ever since I started planning the “mad about Africa” adventure. It is the only country in the world that is entirely located at an altitude higher than 1,000 m (3,281 ft)! So, I was looking forward to exploring its isolated mountains. The inhabitants of this country were a nice surprise too. They have not experienced apartheid and their friendly behaviour shows that.

Το Τόγκο μπορεί να είναι μια απ' τις μικρότερες αφρικανικές χώρες, αλλά είχαμε τη χαρά να το εξερευνήσουμε ενδελεχώς και να μπούμε κάτω απ' την επιδερμίδα του χάρη στους υπέροχους ανθρώπους που γνωρίσαμε. Στα νότια της χώρας, που διαφέρουν πολύ απ' το βορρά, δραπετεύσαμε για λίγο απ' τη ζέστη κι απολαύσαμε τα βουνά!

Togo is one of the smallest African countries. We were delighted to have explored it profoundly, having been under its skin, and all this thanks to the wonderful people we met. On the south, which is different than the north, we escaped the heat for a while and we enjoyed the mountains!
