Famagusta Gate is the entrance to the district of Tacht El-Kala with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. The Icon Museum and old Orthodox John Cathedral form the frame of the central Macarius Square. The massive construction of the Napa-Ayia Church dominates the old town and the pedestrian zone provides interesting shops, restaurants and street cafes. The city is changing more and more into a modern city. Outside Platanistasa, the Stavros Tou Agiasmati Church stands alone within the wooded mountain scenery. In Orthodox Christianity the figures were meant to depict images of a true archetype of a divine and holy nature, not one created by man. In Lagoudera a large barn roof protects the Panagia Tou Araka Church in which once gathered the first people beyond Palestine and the Holy Land, who discovered the Holy Gospel. The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been separated from the European mainland since the Miocene Period. Man has left traces here that indicate the early development of this region. Between the tenth and eight centuries B.C., hunters and gatherers became farmers and herdsmen and settled within a fixed location, they bred domestic animals and plants and began to develop basic skills. It was a time of constant learning. On the island of Cyprus it has been impossible to show a constant line of habitation. However, it is known that the island was inhabited between 10,000 and 8,000 B.C. Then followed around a thousand years of which nothing is known. However, suddenly village communities came into existence with agriculture and the breeding of livestock. The village of Emba is one of the island’s fifty excavation sites and since 1976, archaeologists from Edinburgh University in the UK have been excavating a small village in this location. Here, circular huts of a Bronze Age settlement have been built based upon the original foundations and this has also served to test the durability of the building materials of that time. The Stone Age settlements of Cyprus will most likely always remain a mystery because they contain no traces of human enhancement. But what is here is well worth all the years of archaeology that have gone into revealing some of its ancient past.

An ancient ruined city of immense dimensions, Kourion is one of the most interesting archaeological sites on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Tourists from all over the world visit the impressive ruins of the ancient city that is spectacularly located on a cliff seventy metres above the sea. The city’s well preserved and restored theatre was once an Hellenistic complex and was transformed during the Roman period. It featured three and a half thousand seats and a splendid view across the beach, the Akrotiri Peninsula, and the sea. Each performance must have been a veritable adventure! The House Of The Gladiators is a large private Patrician building, named after the fascinating battle scenes on its floor. The House Of The Achill is a residence whose floor mosaics feature various geometrical patterns and ancient heroes dressed in female attire. Outside the former city wall is the Stadium. The remains of its stone tribunes line the two hundred and seventeen metre long arena. Alas, in the seventh century Arab invasion caused Kourion’s eventual downfall.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital with an almost circular old town that is completely surrounded by walls from the Venetian period. Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

In ancient times, Paphos was for six hundred years the capital of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and an archaeological location that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area inludes Palea and Kato Paphos. In the thirteenth century B.C,. the Phoenicians began to settle in the region and in the twelfth century, Mycenae times, a sanctuary was constructed, the centre of the cult of Aphrodite that was created for the worship of the goddess of love, beauty, lust and fertility. The Greek-Macedonian Ptolemäer kings who resided in Egyptian Alexandria, selected Paphos as the capital of the island and it remained so under Roman governance. Its prosperity continued until the fourth century when it was struck by a devastating earthquake. Soon, the coast became marshy and the inhabitants of the Ottoman period moved to the more elevated terrain of the hinterland and built the town of Ktima. Paphos enjoys an exceptional place in history and contains the monuments and artifacts from prehistoric and Roman times right up to the Middle Ages. The rich heritage of an ancient world!

Cypress, the third largest island in the Mediterranean that, due to its proximity to the Holy Land, was one of the first countries to which Christianity was introduced. With their well preserved churches, the Troodos Mountains are located in the heart of the country. In Pedoulas, a small village in the Marathasa region, is the Archangel Michael Church that dates back to the fifteenth century. From the outside the church looks like a barn but inside are a number of colourful Byzantine wall paintings. Referred to as ‘barn-roof churches’ the buildings often served as a refuge for persecuted Christians and as a hiding place for those art treasures threatened by iconoclasm. Some distance from the village of Platanistasa, the Stavros Tou Agiasmati Church stands alone amid a forested mountain landscape. In around 1500 A.D., Philippos Goul painted the internal walls which once belonged to a monastery, long since decayed. On the Troodos Mountains the guardians of faith, history and tradition most certainly found fulfillment in their quest for peace, sanctity and silence.
