Cycling 70km Across 6 Islands In Japan | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Japan's Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.

Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!

So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.

Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido (ALL 70 KM ????) | One of the World’s BEST Cycling Routes

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido was a challenge… but I had to bike this world-famous cycling route that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, passing over six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea, before I would leave Southern Japan and move to my permanent home in Japan.

I am Noah takes the world. I am obsessed with hiking and biking in scenic places. The Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan’s most scenic biking routes. I started my route at Onomichi Station and ended at Imabari Station.

Japan's BEST Cycling Route 00:00-00:51

Onomichi 00:51-01:33

Mukaishima 01:33-01:54

The first of the islands, most of the highlights you’ll find here run along the blue-marked cycling route. The route runs along Tachibana, a stretch of coastline with some popular pit stops, like cafes, an artisanal chocolate store, and a verdant torii gate overlooking the water.

Innoshima 01:54-02:26

The journey through this island is short, only about 8 kilometers or so, meaning that if you really want to see the island and its sights, you’ll have to go a little off the main route. Innoshimaohashi Memorial Park is probably the most popular and easily accessed highlight on this island. Here you’ll find an unexplained, giant white dinosaur statue and rest facilities—seats, public toilets, vending machines, and the like—nested right by Shimanami Beach. If you have the time, energy, and motivation to go a little deeper, the island also boasts Mount Shirotaki, home to 700 Buddhist statues and spectacular views of the Innoshima Bridge.

Ikuchijima 02:26-03:03

Tucked neatly in the middle of the journey, Ikeuchi is possibly the most touristic island of the route, making it an excellent place to stop, take a rest, explore the area on foot, and even stay for the night. The biggest attractions here are Kosanji Temple and the Hill of Hope.

Omishima 03:03-03:16

Although it’s the biggest of the islands on the route, the journey through Omishima is short, about 5 kilometers running along the island’s east coast. If you want to explore in more depth, there are plenty of options to do so, with shrines, modern museums, and stunning nature spots dotted throughout the island’s landscape.

Hakatajima 03:16-03:42

If you stick to the main cycling route, Hakatajima is only briefly covered, as the road runs along the island’s western coast. If you’re so inclined, it is quite doable to cycle the island’s circumference, which clocks in at 20 kilometers and is relatively flat. Alternatively, you could scale the 149-meter high Hirakiyama mountain, which in spring offers incredible views with the landscape blanketed in soft pink cherry blossoms.

Oshima 03:42-04:36

Along this way, you’ll find beautiful long sandy beaches, quaint fishing ports, and impressive shipyards, and sweeping views across the water to the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, an iconic view of the Shimanami Kaido.

Imabari 04:36-06:01

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido | 24 hours in Onomichi | Japan's Best Cycling | Japan in Summer

Onomichi is a cruisy sea-side town that offers hiking, ramen and more cycling than your butt can handle. Ferry across the peninsula and cycle the Shimanami Kaido as it slowly dawns on you how woefully wrong you were to overestimate your cardio fitness.

Why I want to do the Shimanami Kaido ????????????

Why I want to do the Shimanami Kaido, one of the world's best cycling routes in Japan, from Honshu to Shikoku.

The Shimanami Kaido is a 70km cycling route over the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. It's a beautiful track across several tall suspension bridges and islands, and the views are amazing. It's also a great way to get from Honshu to Shikoku if you're travelling around Japan. The video covers how long it takes, hiring bikes, places to stop, what there is to see and what to do if you get stuck. I'm just as excited about going to Onomichi, a town at the start/end of the route, which has a beautiful temple walk, a cat alley and a lucky cat museum!

What to know and prepare for on the best scenic cycling route in Japan! (Part 1)

One of the most magnificent coastal scenic views in all of Japan - the Shimanami Kaido is still one of the best-kept secrets even in Japan as only a few Japanese know the Shimanami Kaido. In this video, I will tell my story of how to get to Onomichi which is the start of the Shimanami Kaido, and then the logistics of some of the things I had to do to prepare for the ride for the next day. If this is your first time cycling the Shimanami Kaido, then watch this video Part 1 and then Part 2: the actual story of riding the Shimanami Kaido and sharing my problems and mistakes:

The entire Shimanami Kaido one-way route is 75 kilometers, crossing over six islands and six massive suspension bridges. The last bridge before Imabari, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, is the world's longest suspension bridge at four kilometers long. If you are planning to visit Japan or presently live in Japan and enjoy cycling, the Shimanami Kaido is a must on your bucket list!

Shimanami Kaido | The best cycling routes in Japan

I hope you enjoyed our trip to Shimanami Kaido. It is a beautiful bicycle route that runs through the islands. It connects Ehime prefecture with Hiroshima.
We started our trip in Ehime, but the route can also be started in Hiroshima. There are many places where you can rent bicycles (price: 2000円/60zl per day). We rented cyclo-cross bikes this time, so it was fun to ride, not counting the sore butt. There is also an option for lazy people with an electric bike. If you ride a bike and walk, the route is free. Unicycles, cars have to pay to cross the bridges.
We went there at the beginning of December, and at that time in Japan the temps calmly reach 15C. Unfortunately, as we came to face the route there was a temporary breakdown in the weather. We couldn't rebook our tickets, so we decided to just dress better. It wasn't so bad until the rain came.

The people in these parts of Japan were very friendly and hospitable. For example, when we encountered children returning from school along the route, they often greeted us. People there were more willing to strike up a brief conversation than in busy Tokyo.
Besides, the campaign from the government to support smaller areas of Japan continues in Japan. For one night's stay at a hotel, if one meets the criteria (PCR, or vaccination) one gets vouchers to use locally (in a given prefecture) in the amount of PLN 100 per person. It is worth taking advantage if one has the opportunity.
If anyone has any questions, please write in the comments, we will help as much as we can.
From us, that's it, we recommend Shimanami Kaido wholeheartedly and we'll see you in the next episode.

Cycle the Shimanami Kaido

Shikoku is waiting for you! The Shimanami Kaido runs from Onomichi (near Hiroshima) to Imabari (in Ehime). Some people do this 70km journey in one day, but we encourage guests to explore this area slowly, to go swimming, to climb mountains, to really get a feeling for the pace of life of this area. We provide detailed maps with cultural and historical information, advice on where to go and what to eat, and make hotel arrangements. We can arrange guides if needed. We also provide luggage transfer, breakfast and dinner at the hotels, bike rental, and (if needed) bike support and phone rental. We work with small local hotels - an inn owned by a fisherman who serves what he catches and a more traditional ryokan with only four rooms. We believe our 2 night/3 day tour offers travellers the chance to experience the best this area has to offer!

For more details of this tour, please visit our website:

Island hopping by bike: Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido cycling route runs 70 kms from Onomichi in Hiroshima, to Imabari in Ehime prefecture. It winds through islands, and over the bridges connecting them. July might not be the most comfortable time to ride it, as we discovered, but it was still a lot of a fun.

Japan Bike Tour Vlog Day 12 - Tobishima Kaido

On the twelfth day of our tour, we bid farewell to our beautiful home in Omishima island and made our way towards the next chain of islands towards Kure via the Tobishima Kaido.

On Omishima Island, we rode to the Munakata ferry port where we would take the ferry to Ocho port on Okamura island. From there, we climbed a series of bridges into the next island where the historical town of Mitarai awaited.

In Mitarai, we chose to stay at a self check-in historical guesthouse, Hatagoya Kusushi, which has been around for a hundred years and was formerly the residence and clinic of the local doctor.
