Cycle Touring Japan: Shimanami Kaido, Shikoku in Winter

Japan's Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.

Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!

So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.

Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

10 Things you should know BEFORE you Cycle the Shimanami Kaido in Japan!

Cycle the most beautiful coastal scenery route in Japan! CNN Travel wrote that this is one of the most incredible cycling routes in the world! And surprisingly, it is still the best-kept secret in Japan! Not many Japanese are familiar with the Shimanami Kaido cycling route from Onomichi, Hiroshima to Imabari, Ehime in Shikoku. In this video, I will cover 10-18 different observations and suggestions on what you should know before you attempt to cycle the Shimanami Kaido. There are a lot of YouTube videos about cycling, vlogging, and experiencing the Shimanami Kaido, but none of them cover in detail what you should know if this is your first time cycling the Shimanami. This video tries to cover everything that I noticed and wish I knew before I started cycling the Shimanami Kaido for three days.

The entire Shimanami Kaido one-way route is 75 kilometers, crossing over six islands and six massive suspension bridges. The last bridge before Imabari, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, is the world's longest suspension bridge at four kilometers long. If you are planning to visit Japan or presently live in Japan and enjoy cycling, the Shimanami Kaido is a must on your bucket list!

Cycling Japan: Kyushu and Shikoku During Cherry Blossom Season // World Bicycle Touring Episode 43

After taking a ferry from Busan to Fukuoka, we cycled across the island of Kyushu and took another ferry to Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. The rural seaside villages of Japan were a delight to cycle through, and the scenery on the islands varied between quiet mossy forests, gorgeous blue mountain streams, and rocky coastline.

Japan is an absolutely wonderful cycling destination due to its many route options, incredible food, and amazing people. Shikoku was a big highlight of our two month tour in Japan despite some challenging weather conditions. We hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

Shimanami Kaido: Cycling Japan's most scenic bike route DAY 2

Hello everyone,
In this video, I head to Hiroshima Prefecture to begin my 2-day biking challenge along the Shimanami Kaido bike route! The Shimanami Kaido is an 80km long bicycle route that stretches across 6 different islands starting in Onomichi, Hiroshima, and finishing in Imabari, Ehime.
The Shimanami Kaido is listed as one of the world's most scenic bike routes, which I can definitely attest to.
Follow me on my journey across the Shimanami Kaido and see for yourself how beautiful this famous route is.

What to know and prepare for on the best scenic cycling route in Japan! (Part 1)

One of the most magnificent coastal scenic views in all of Japan - the Shimanami Kaido is still one of the best-kept secrets even in Japan as only a few Japanese know the Shimanami Kaido. In this video, I will tell my story of how to get to Onomichi which is the start of the Shimanami Kaido, and then the logistics of some of the things I had to do to prepare for the ride for the next day. If this is your first time cycling the Shimanami Kaido, then watch this video Part 1 and then Part 2: the actual story of riding the Shimanami Kaido and sharing my problems and mistakes:

The entire Shimanami Kaido one-way route is 75 kilometers, crossing over six islands and six massive suspension bridges. The last bridge before Imabari, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, is the world's longest suspension bridge at four kilometers long. If you are planning to visit Japan or presently live in Japan and enjoy cycling, the Shimanami Kaido is a must on your bucket list!

Japan's Must-Visit Cycling Journey | Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido cycle across Japan's Inland Sea is Incredible. To be honest you have to do it for your self to really feel how incredible it is. Even if it kills you for the next two days, you will not regret it. Even though it was really tough in the scorching hot temperatures, I decided on the bus back to Onomichi that I would come back here soon to cycle again.
Besides that, if you ever come make sure to wear cycling pants Tommy regretted not wearing any.

The Shimanami Kaido: The best bicycle route in Japan しまなみ海道

Subscribe to my channel here. Thank you so much for a thumb-up!

Behind the scenes:
The Shimanami Kaido is 70-kilometer-long bicycle route that stretches from the city of Onomichi on the main island of Honshu to Imabari on Shikoku. It crosses several bridges and islands, offering a different side of Japan. All the bridges have designated bicycle lanes. In my opinion, this is the best bicycle route in Japan. We did this travel adventure in May 2018 within two days, spending the night in a ryokan on Omishima Island.

Technical infos:
I fixed a DJI Osmo+ (the DJI Osmo Pocket didn’t exist at the time) and a Crystal Sky display on the front of my bicycle. Additionally I used a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the aerial shots.

Cycling along Shimanami Kaido in Imabari || 2021-10/11 Shikoku Travels

Next up on my Shikoku trip was Imabari, which is a port town north of Matsuyama. Here, I rented a bike and cycled partway across the Shimanami Kaido bridge, which is something I had always wanted to do in Japan! Unfortunately due to time limitations and me not being used to cycling, I was only able to cross the first two bridges before I had to turn back to return the bike.

The next day, I continued exploring temples which are part of the 88 Temple Pilgrimage. This time, I visited temples #54 to #56. I also visited Imabari Castle, which has spectacular views of the town.
