Travel Insurance Tips: 7 Things to Know Before You Buy

Should you insure your next trip? Do you really need travel insurance? These are questions I’ve been getting more often due to the recent pandemic and I will take some time in this video to answer those questions about travel insurance. The reason to buy travel insurance can be simply put: Travel Insurance minimizes the financial risks associated with travel.

Does it make sense for you?
For some people it makes financial sense. Others it doesn’t.
How willing are you to take risks? How much if peace of mind worth for you?
If your potential loss is a few hundred dollars in airfare, travel insurance is probably not worth the cost or aggravation. On the other hand, a once-in-a-lifetime $20,000 vacation is worth protecting.

Types of Travel Insurance:
Trip cancellation: Refund if you cancel due to a covered reason. CORONAVIRUS TYPICALLY ISN’T ONE.
Trip interruption: Refund for the rest of your trip if you have to return home
Trip delay: Refund for expenses due to a delay. Usually has to be 6 to 12 hours.
Medical: Emergency medical expenses on the trip. Optional: Medical Transport
Death/Dismemberment:
Baggage: Lost, Stolen, Damaged, Delay
Rental Car
Change Fees
=== Less common types:
Political evacuation: Transport to the nearest safe place
Comprehensive insurance covers all of the above (plus expenses incurred if your trip is delayed, if you miss your flight, or if your tour company changes your itinerary).
Reimbursement only -- you pay first… then submit some paperwork to get your money back.
Travel alot? Look in to Annual policies

CUBA TIPS 10 things to know before you travel to Cuba! Tips for Havana, Vinales, Trinidad & Varadero

Welcome to my things to know when travelling to Cuba video. Here are my top 10 tips on what you need to know before and during your trip

1.Visa & documentation
Check to see if you need a visa. UK citizens can apply for a tourist card here This is applied for via post, costs £39 and is payable by postal order. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after you leave Cuba. Another thing you must have is valid travel insurance.

2. Money
There are two currencies in Cuba. CUP which is for the locals and CUC which is used by the tourists. 1 CUC roughly equates to 1 USD.
Don’t bring US dollars as you are charged an extra 10 per cent tax when exchanging. I bought British pounds which are easily exchanged. You could also bring Euros. There are very few places in Cuba that accept payment by cards so I recommend bringing plenty of cash with you.
Booking your accommodation and travel in advance saves you having to pay for it when you are there and carrying the extra cash around.

3. Internet
Access to the internet is limited and slow. You get access to it with the internet cards (NAUTA cards) which you can get from ETECSA offices. You will need a passport to buy an internet card. It costs 1 cuc for 1 hour access. You can also buy these internet cards from hotels , casa's or locals but you may end up paying a bit more. To join the internet you need to select the network you want to connect to and then scratch the back of the card to reveal the password which you type in along with the username when connecting.

4. Accommodation
You can stay in Hotels or casa particulares. The casa owners can help arrange excursions, taxis and onward travel. I booked all the casa particulares I stayed in beforehand via air bnb ( and booking.com. You can message the casa owner beforehand to tell them of your arrival time and any questions you may have.
Keep a picture of the and booking reservation and address on your phone.

The places I stayed at
B&W Chacón (Havana)
Casa Particular Ridel y Claribel (Vinales)
Casa JayFe (Trinidad)
Media Varadero

All the hotels and casa particulares have both 110 and 220 voltage plug sockets. The plug types used in Cuba are A, B, C and L. So bring an adapter if the plug type is different to your own countries

5. Apps
I would recommend you get maps.me and download the map of Cuba as this allows you to navigate offline.
I would also suggest you download google translate and download Spanish
Pocket is useful as you can download webpages that you can view later. This is useful when you are researching restaurants and things to do before you come to Cuba.
The Cuba app is also useful all round app which has accommodation, maps, restaurants and things to do.

6. Travel
Taxis are very expensive in Cuba. I would research in advance how much it should cost so you can negotiate a better price. Also, make sure you confirm the price before you get in. A Taxi from the Havana international airport to old Havana cost 30 CUC.

I used Private taxi when taking a tour of Vinales and Trinidad. I organised it through the casa I was staying at. It is more expensive but you get to tailor it to what you want to see and how long you want to stay at the attraction.

Taxi collectivos are another great way of travelling around. These are shared taxis which is cheaper. I used a taxi collectivo when travelling to Vinales from Havana. This cost 25 CUC per person and I organised this through the casa.

For longer journeys I would recommend using the viazul tourist bus To avoid disappointment I would recommend you book this in advance online. Make sure you print out the reservation confirmation at home and bring this to the viazul office about half an hour before departure to get you tickets and tags for your luggage.
I didn’t rent a car as I heard it was expensive and the roads aren’t generally well maintained.

7. Food and drink
Food quality is mixed in Cuba and I would stick to highly rated restaurants
Breakfast at your casa is normally a good option. The restaurants in Havana I would recommend are El cafe, Lo De Monik, Kilometer zero, 304 O’Reilly, Habana 61, 5 Esquinas Trattoria

In Vinales I would recommend 3 Js (tres Jotas) tapas bar

In Trinidad, I would recommend you visit San Jose which specialises in Seafood.

8. Safety
Like in most places I would recommend you leave your passport locked away in the safe and avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you.

9. Scams
Make sure you carry change with you as some taxi drivers say they don’t have change. Make sure you also negotiate a price.

10. Things to brings
-Comfortable walking shoes
-All your necessities
-Medicine. Painkillers and stomach meds
-Hand sanitizer and tissues/toilet roll for when you are travelling and out and about
-Snacks such as energy bars
-Gifts for locals (optional)

I hope you have an amazing time in Cuba. Any questions please email me or leave a comment.

Cuba, what you need to know before going

CUBA a Revolution Failure. Walking the streets of the real Cuban people, that the tours does not show you. Subscribe and lke.

Top Cuba Travel Tips:

1) Can U.S. Citizens travel to Cuba? Yes.
While flying to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute (hence the title of this video), there are 13 other permitted reasons for travel. The main reason most American visitors should choose is: 'Support for the Cuban people'.

2) Do US Citizens require a Visa? Yes
You can easily purchase the visa at a Cuban visa kiosk at your departure airport. The visa costs $50 - $100 depending on the airline. Just arrive at the airport a little earlier to fill out the form and obtain the visa which gives you 60 days in Cuba (with a possible 30-day extension).

Europeans and Canadians can obtain a Cuba Tourist Card which gives you 90 days in Cuba. You can extend your Cuban tourist visa for an additional 90 days, for a total of 180 days.

3) Do you need Health Insurance to visit Cuba? Yes
U.S. Citizens / Green Card holders who fly to Cuba directly via the U.S. are automatically insured because a $25 fee is added to your ticket price. Keep your boarding pass as proof of health insurance and if you do require medical assistance, you present your boarding pass and passport at the hospital in Cuba.

Everyone else (Canada/UK/Germany/Russia etc) can obtain cheap health insurance at Solways Cuba website.

4) Do US Credit and Debit cards work in Cuba? No.
With very few exceptions, U.S. credit and debit cards do not currently work in Cuba. You should bring U.S. dollars to Cuba and exchange them for Cuban Pesos (CUP). Make sure the US bills do not have any marks or tears as these may not be accepted. In addition, you can check the current informal foreign market rate in Cuba on the ELTOQUE.com website.

European and other debit and credit cards may or may not work in Cuba but you should not rely on this as you will get a very bad exchange rate using your card at the ATM or stores. It is recommended you bring Euros or US dollars.

5) How much cash should I bring? Recommended $50 to $100 a day.
Bring more cash than you will need as it is better to take home the extra dollars you didn't spend than to run out of cash in the middle of your Cuba trip. Many visitors have run out of money in the middle of their trip due to not bringing enough cash.

6) Can I get Internet access on my phone while in Cuba? Yes.
You can purchase a Cuban tourist sim card in advance of your trip and pick it up when you arrive at the airport in Cuba. Visit the SUENA CUBA website to order the SIM card.

7) Do I need a VPN for my trip to Cuba? Yes
Everyone should download a VPN (recommend NordVPN or Express VPN) on both your laptop and mobile phone BEFORE you travel to Cuba. This is because some websites and apps are blocked if you try to access them in Cuba. For example, you cannot book an Airbnb while you are in Cuba without a VPN.

8) How much is a taxi ride from the airport in Havana to the city center? $25
There are taxis outside the airport in Havana into the city and most will charge $25 US dollars. Make sure to ask and confirm the fare.

9) What essential items should i bring with me to Cuba?
Bring all your medication, toiletries (including female hygiene), body spray for mosquitos and sunscreen.

10) Can i stay in a hotel or Airbnb for my trip to Cuba?
Americans can book and stay in an Airbnb in Cuba but are prohibited from staying in certain hotels that are owned entirely or partially by the Cuban government. Choose: 'Support for the Cuban people' when booking your Airbnb. Europeans and everyone else can book both an Airbnb or stay in any hotel you wish.
