Croatia - Our beautiful homeland

A rich culture and the breathtaking landscapes of the Croatian Mediterranean. This has made Croatia one of the most popular holiday regions of Europe, already at times of the United Yugoslavia. In two episodes Hans Jöchler and his team travel the land of the countless islands and historically meaningful places on the mainland. The film shows impressive landscapes on the mainland and the islands. However it delivers an informative insight into the busy history of a multiethnic nation, which became a full member of the European Union in 2014.

This first of two episodes presents well known destinations like Rovinji. Here many traces of the Venetians are to be found which once were rulers of the country. Furthermore the city of Pula and some of the 1242 islands of Croatia stand on the itinerary, such as Cres or Pag. One of the highlights is the visit of the oldest national park of Europe, Paklenica with its impressive gorges and black pine wood. A visit of the former capitol city of Dalmatia, Zadar stands before the boat trip to the Kornati.

On Dugi Otok the team puts the heads and the camera under water briefly, to be astonished about the variety of ocean coral species and molluscs at the up to 90 meters deep steep slopes. Finally the team heads on for Riva, one of the most popular tourist destinations of Croatia. This film gives the audience an impression of a country which suffers often from just being seen as a destination for mass tourism. But hardly many people know about its high cultural status proved for example by old sacred buildings or the Artworks and crafts.

Croatia National Anthem English lyrics

Lijepa nasa domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland) is the national anthem of Croatia. Its opening words, Lijepa nasa (Our Beautiful), are widely used as a metonym for Croatia.
The original lyrics were written by Antun Mihanovic and first published under the title Horvatska domovina (Croatian homeland) in 1835. The music was composed by Josip Runjanin in 1846.
The complete song was reportedly scored and harmonized by Vatroslav Lichtenegger in 1861, and it was first performed as the Croatian anthem in the same year, under the title Lijepa naša. The original anthem has 15 verses. Since then it has come to be known under the slightly longer present title and a few minor adjustments have been made to the lyrics.Between 1918 and 1941, segments of the Croatian national anthem were part of the National Anthem of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The Sava Floodplains - Croatia's secret paradise

Every year, in the middle of Croatia, it's the same story: after the annual snowmelt, a huge flood wave spills out of the Alps toward Zagreb and Belgrade. This leads to an increase in the River Sava's water levels of some ten meters. The contents of more than ten billion bathtubs floods an area the size of Lake Constance, often for months on end, yet still the Croatian and Serbian capital is spared a flood disaster. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the Sava is able to flow unhindered. The annual floods not only create a natural retention reservoir for flood control: alongside the Sava lies a natural paradise, unique in Central Europe. In the species-rich, alluvial flood forests of the last major meadow landscapes of the continent, enormous predatory fish like the catfish lie in wait for prey.

The fertile floodplains of the Sava are an important resting place for more than 240 bird species, including Hoopoe, great crested Grebe, little Egret, common snipe and pied Avocet. Old, domestic livestock breeds like the Turopolje pig and Posavina horse spend almost the entire year in the floodplains. They appreciate the alluvial meadows, keep puddles and mudholes open whilst wallowing and, as living lawnmowers, they ensure that the moist meadows aren't transformed into dense oak forests. Thanks to this traditional pasture farming, more than 700 pairs of white stork alone breed in the Lonjsko Polje National Park. The Sava Floodplains allow us to glance into the past of our continent and at the same time, illustrate just how flood protection for major towns can be perfected.

Croatia is SO underrated!!

We LOVE Croatia! Sailing, Sunsets, Islands and Ajvar :)

It is one of our favourite countries.

We wanted to take some time for ourselves this week by renting out a little cottage on Brač Island to spend some cozy days by the fire followed by a few days sailing across the Adriatic Sea.

We had an amazing time exploring the Islands and eating home cooked meals by the fire place. If you're ever considering a romantic getaway with friends we highly recommend you get in touch with the guys at Orvas Villas and Orvas Yachting (link below) The prices are quite cheap if you travel as a group and the experience is well worth it in our eyes.

Croatia boasts almost 2000km of rocky shore and more than a thousand islands, many blanketed in luxuriant vegetation. Off-the-beaten-track islands, quiet coves and stone-built fishing villages make you feel as if you’re visiting Europe at its most unspoiled. But travel to Croatia and you’ll find the country also has a cool and contemporary sheen – evidenced in its arts attractions and galleries, its swanky hotels and cocktail bars, and flashy yacht-filled harbours. The country also has a growing reputation for niche festivals – not just in the party-the-weekend-away music events held on beaches and in ancient forts up and down the coast, but also in the mushrooming number of arts festivals and small-town cultural shindigs.

A renewed respect for natural ingredients has become the watchword of Croatian cuisine, with locally sourced foodstuffs, wines and olive oils finding their way into some great regional cooking and speciality dishes.

The country has come a long way since the early 1990s, when within the space of half a decade – almost uniquely in contemporary Europe – it experienced the collapse of communism, a war of national survival and the securing of independence. Nearly twenty-five years on, visitors will be struck by the tangible sense of pride that independent statehood has brought. National culture is a far from one-dimensional affair, however, and much of the country’s individuality is due to its geographical position, straddling the point at which the sober Central European virtues of hard work and order collide with the spontaneity and vivacity that characterize the countries of southern Europe. Not only that, but the country also stands on one of the great fault lines of European civilization, where the Catholicism of Central Europe meets the Islam and Orthodox Christianity of the East. Though Croats traditionally see themselves as a Western people, many of the hallmarks of Balkan culture – patriarchal families, hospitality towards strangers and a fondness for grilled food – are as common in Croatia as in any other part of southeastern Europe.

Croatia travel facts
================
Spoken language: Croatian is the official language (spoken by around 95 percent of the population)

Currency: kuna (Kn)

Population: around four million

Tourist numbers: around 20 million in 2018

Politics: a single-chamber parliamentary democracy with a directly elected – though largely ceremonial – president as head of state

Sport: Croatia reached the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup championships in July 2018, the smallest country by population to do so since Uruguay in 1950

Hours of sunshine: 2715 (more than Sydney)

Coffee consumption: over 5kg of coffee a year on average (almost twice as much as the average Brit)

Where to go in Croatia
=================
Choosing where to visit in Croatia can be a tough one, as this is a country that offers it all: crumbling palaces, idyllic islands and beaches, and the best nightlife in the Adriatic.
Croatia’s big cities

If it’s history and culture you’re after, Croatia certainly ticks the boxes. You’ll find medieval remains, Baroque grandeur and Byzantine monuments in towns and cities, such as Poreč, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Šibenik and Split, Venetian architecture in Rovinj, and a two-thousand-year-old Roman amphitheatre at Pula.

But Croatia’s towns and cities aren’t just about ancient monuments. The country’s capital, Zagreb, has a distinctly modern vibe, with its quirky art and alternative music scene. Dubrovnik offers a plethora of eccentric bars, and Hvar Town on the beautiful island of Hvar, a touch of glamour. Several cities also host summer festivals showcasing top-class drama and music.

Croatia’s national parks
==================
If it’s the untamed great outdoors you’re after, Croatia provides an abundance of staggeringly beautiful national parks – such as Paklenica, with its karst wilderness and fir-clad slopes, the breathtaking forest-fringed lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes, and Northern Velebit, a hiker’s paradise.

The Croatian islands
====================
Undeniably though, its Croatia’s beaches and islands that are the country’s top draw. The Elaphite Islands of Kolcep, Lopud and Sipan are among the most beautiful and unspoiled in the Adriatic, and beaches on the Pelješac Peninsula, and on the Dalmatian coast – such as those on the islands of Brac and Susak, are surely the most irresistible.

Beautiful Croatia from Above

As one of the most breathtakingly beautiful destinations on our planet, Croatia deserves to be shown in all of its natural splendour. This drone footage captures some of Croatia's thousand dreamy island getaways, sprawling waterfalls and famed medieval architecture.

This architecture is so unique to Croatia that the walled seaside fortress of Croatia's Dubrovnik has been used to depict 'King's Landing' of Game of Thrones. Unlike other scenic castle towns, Dubrovnik remain one of the last unspoilt by surrounding billboards and hotels.

Continental Croatia is an oasis of tranquility, with gentle hills home to age-old forests, vineyards and the Sava, Drava and Mura rivers sheltering the local towns from the summer heat.

A mere stone’s throw to the north and northeast of capital Zagreb. The region is dotted with romantic medieval towns such as Koprivnica or Varaždin, countryside manors such as Trakošćan Castle and thermal spas perfect for leaving you rejuvenated.

Croatia is also home to the world's biggest truffle and what Alfred Hitchcock claimed to be the world's best sunsets. This sun-drenched coastal paradise is fast becoming the destination of 2016, and with good cause. With a balance of outdoor activities, glorious beaches, delicious food and warm climate, what more could one look for when planning their next holiday?

ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.

We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

Our beautiful homeland,
O so fearless and gracious,
Our fathers' ancient glory,
May you be blessed forever.

Dear, you are our only glory,
Dear, you are our only one,
Dear, we love your plains,
Dear, we love your mountains.

Drava, Sava, keep on flowing,
Danube, do not lose your vigor,
Deep blue sea, tell the world,
That a Croat loves his homeland.

Whilst his fields are kissed by sunshine,
Whilst his oaks are whipped by wild winds,
Whilst his dear ones go to heaven,
Whilst his live heart beats.

Lijepa naša domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland) is the national anthem of Croatia. It was the anthem of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, and became that of the Republic of Croatia upon the declaration of independence in 1991.

The original lyrics were written by Antun Mihanović and first published under the title Horvatska domovina (Croatian homeland) in 1835. The music was composed by Josip Runjanin in 1846.

The complete song was reportedly scored and harmonized by Vatroslav Lichtenegger in 1891, and it was first performed as the Croatian anthem in the same year, under the title Lijepa naša. Since then it has come to be known under the slightly longer present title and a few minor adjustments have been made to the lyrics.

Country in the Balkans

Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it's also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

In the coastal Dalmatia region, the town of Split is centered around the ruins of Diocletian's Palace, a vast 4th-century Roman complex. Croatia’s beaches and islands are busy in summer, and many offer sites for tent or trailer camping. Hvar is a glitzy island with yachts and celebrities, and nearby Korčula is known for pine forests, wine and a medieval walled Old Town. Plitvice Lakes National Park is renowned for turquoise lakes and dramatic waterfalls. Croatian cuisine is diverse, blending hints of Hungarian, Italian, Turkish and Slavic influences.
