5 days in CRETE, GREECE | traveling during OFF-PEAK season to a lesser-known island (skip Mykonos!)

In November, I went on a 5-day girls’ trip to Crete! This was my first time in Greece and I’m so glad we chose Crete out of all the other major islands. We rented a two-bedroom villa with the most beautiful interior, a balcony overlooking fruit trees and old houses, and a private pool. Everything we ate was AMAZING and grown directly on the island - from traditional dishes like bougatsa and various cheese pies, to local greens and hearty mushroom stews. We rented a car and drove around three major cities to explore the charm of each one.

A lot of locals were surprised we were in Crete during November. Everywhere we went, they would remind us that it’s “off-peak” season and that some places were closed. We definitely wished it was warmer, but in the end we realized that there were so many amazing moments we probably wouldn’t have experienced during the peak season. Empty roads, less tourists, quieter streets to stroll on; all of these are reasons why there is never a “perfect” time to travel. At the end of the day, I’m glad I never experienced the picture-perfect ‘Greece’ that tourists usually make up in their head. I got to soak in the charm, the grace, and all the magic that lives on the beautiful island of Crete :)

Greek Food - STREET FOOD TOUR and Amazing Souvlaki in Athens, Greece!

Thank you to Tassos for taking me on this incredible Greek food tour of Athens!
►Subscribe -
►T-shirts -

Athens is a city that I’ve wanted to visit ever since learning so much about it during one of my Western Civilizations classes in High School. Finally, I had a chance to visit, not only for the amazing history, but mainly for the amazing Greek food!

In this video, I’m taking you on a one day, all out Greek food tour of Athens along with Tassos. We ate a combination of classic Greek street food snacks, and a few restaurants, including for dinner some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had.

Here are all the restaurants and places included in this Greek food tour of Athens:

Dexameni Cafe - Our first stop was to drink Greek coffee in this small public square. A great environment, and the coffee was excellent.
Price - 1.80 EUR per cup

Kostarelos Deli - Tassos knows his Greek cheese and he says Kostarelos Deli has some of the best cheese in Athens.
Total price - 14.60 EUR

Mam - Mam is often considered the best Greek cheese pie in Athens, and it’s a perfect street food kind of place. Most people take-away, but they have a standing table as well. The classic Greek cheese pie was my favorite.
Total price - 4.80 EUR

Varvakios Market - This is the Athens central market for meat and seafood. It’s a beautiful market and any lover would enjoy walking around this amazing market.

Miran - Pastourma and Soutzouki - This is a really cool little deli in Athens where you can buy for takeaway or order whatever you see and sit at one of the tables to snack. They are known for their camel pastirma, and it was the best thing we tried - absolutely excellent.
Total price - 4.62 EUR

Bougatsopoleio Thessaloniki - Bougatsa is a famous Greek food pastry. We tried a couple versions, but the best for me was the minced meat filled bougatsa.
Total price - 15.50 EUR

Kostas Soulvaki - Souvlaki, also known as kalamaki is perhaps the best known of all Greek street food or Greek fast food, and Kostas is considered to be one of the best places to eat it in Athens. They grill pork, stuff it into Greek pita, top it with tomatoes, onions, and tomato sauce, and wrap it into a handheld treat. Amazing.
Price - 2.20 EUR per piece

Taverna To Trigono - For dinner, Tassos wanted to take us to one of his favorite restaurants in Athens, a little outside of the city in a place called Kalyvia Thorikou. This is a countryside meat paradise, and they served us some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had in my life. An amazing meal to end an incredible day of Greek food in Athens.
Lamb chops
Total price for everything - 99 EUR

Thank you for watching this Greek food tour of Athens!

Julia visits the island of Crete, intending to step away from the tourist trail and head deep into its heart to explore the Dikti mountains and its striking plateau of windmills. She meets goat shepherd Giannis, who shows her how he makes cheese using traditional methods. Back on the coast at Rethymno, Julia tries the delicacy baklava, meeting filo pastry expert Giorgos, and also meets master artisan Nico, who expertly makes stringed musical instrument, the Cretan lyre. Chania, Crete is an amazing old town, that’s rich with culture, and has some seriously delicious Greek island food to discover. In this video, you’ll find some of the must-eat restaurants and street food stalls to try, if you love to eat, when you’re in Chania, Crete!

Here are all the places featured in this Cretan food tour of Chania:

Μπουγάτσα Χανίων - For breakfast there’s no better place in Chania to get started than this local spot that specializes in bougatsa, and amazing cheese filled pastry. You can eat it with or without sugar, both was delicious, but I liked it without sugar.
Total price - 5.40 EUR for 2

Oasis - For street food, this is about as good as Greek food gets. Oasis is a local gem that serves Cretan Greek gyro pita, a spit of pork that revolves and slow cooks. When you order, you get pita, filled with gyro meat, seasoning and tzatziki to top it off. It’s outstanding.
Gyro pita - 2 EUR each

Old Chania Market (Agora Market) - One of the many best things to do in Chania, Crete, is walk around the Old Chania Market, especially if you love to eat. I chose to eat at a restaurant called Αγαπήνης Οινομαγειρείο, that serves traditional Cretan food. It’s a market atmosphere, and the food is outstanding.
Total price - 21 EUR for everything

Attractions in Chania - Agios Nikolaos, Chania Promenade, Lighthouse - In the afternoon I did some sightseeing in Chania, which is a very charming town. I would highly recommend taking the walk out to the end of the lighthouse. The views are spectacular.

Thalassino Ageri Restaurant - For dinner in Chania, we walked over to a restaurant called Thalassino Ageri Restaurant a legendary Greek seafood restaurant, along the coast, in an area of town with abandoned buildings. The setting is superb, and they offer a variety of seafood, including fresh fish catch of the day. We ordered a bunch of seafood, and enjoyed the gorgeous environment.
Total price - 74.90 EUR

Thank you for joining me on this Greek food tour of Chania, Crete. Hope it gives you some delicious food ideas, and thank you for watching!

Crete: Why is Food in Crete Island of Greece so Tasty and Healthy? #mediterraneanfood

Food in Crete Island (Greece) is so fresh and varied that you'll want to try many traditional dishes before you leave this beautiful island. Its ancient roots are not forgotten here and food is still prepared as their ancestors did.

The land in Crete is extremely fertile and the locals prefer growing their own vegetables, animals and herbs. They use crop rotation and enrich the soil organically. Also, they refrain from feeding concentrated foods to their animals.

They love consuming everything fresh and rarely buy imported food. There are still many taverns, especially in the villages, passed from generation to generation, where tourists can try the original cooking style in Crete.

I was overwhelmed by the taste of this island's dishes, by the variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes and by the warmth of the people. I admire their respect for nature and old traditions!

It was Crete that inspired the researches to find out more about their diet, as Cretans are healthier and live longer lives. They discovered that the freshness of the products they consume, together with the varied types of foods they prepare, make Cretan food so healthy and beneficial.

These studies opened the way for the Mediterranean diet, which includes now dishes from all Mediterranean countries.

At the end of the video, there are some tips that I have for your first visit to Crete ;)

Enjoy your visit to this beautiful island! There are sooooo many amazing dishes to try and beautiful places to visit in Crete.

Traditional Greek Food Hidden in the Mountains of Crete | Greece Travel

Crete makes some of the best Greek food in the Greek Islands and Greece. In this travel vlog, we find a hidden traditional Cretan food restaurant in a small village named Spili. The small taverna To Sideradiko serves up some of the most low-key but authentic and delicious Greek food. The owner takes you inside his restaurant and shows you the dishes he has made fresh that day. We decided on the large Greek beans, Greek spinach pie, beef, and homemade Greek noodles. Some of the other dishes available on the day we visited were chicken with Okra and lamb with beans. We definitely recommend taking a quick stop here if you're in the area.

After eating, we take a stroll through the small town of Spili.

Best Chania Bougatsa in Crete - Greece #Shorts

Want to experience local culture through food? In this YouTube #shorts, discover Bougatsa from Chania made at Iordanis, the oldest and most famous bougatsa shop in town.

???? SUBSCRIBE for more videos here: ????

Bougatsa is a famous breakfast pastry in Greece. It is a Greek breakfast pie made with smooth and crunchy phyllo pastry sheets filled with fresh cheese.

►WATCH HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BOUGATSA:

Unlike other versions of bougatsa across Greece, bougatsa in Chania is made with the local cheese known as mizithra cheese.

Iordanis Akasiadis and his wife, Ioanna, the fourth generation, keep this more than 90-year tradition alive.

The secret to their bougatsa success as Ioanna told us is their use of local ingredients and extremely thin handmade sheets of phyllo.

The local mizithra cheese is the star and what gives bougatsa its particular and unique flavors.

And, the phyllo dough is handmade using flour, water, salt and olive oil for the dough.

Iordanis Bougatsa is famous worldwide and their bougatsa is always made and served fresh.

It is impossible to visit Chania without having one and more likely two servings of bougatsa from Iodanis.

Here is the location of Iordanis in Chania:
