CRETE, GREECE | 7 Places You Should Visit In Crete!
In this video, we highlight 7 places you should visit in Crete Greece in 2021. Crete is the largest island of Greece and has many things to do and see. These are the 7 best things to do in Crete:
7. The 7th best thing to do in Crete is visit Heraklion. This is the largest city on the island and is also the capital of Crete, so it’s the perfect place to start your journey. Heraklion has a long history and has Arab as well as Venetian influences. It’s a great destination for anyone who loves a combination of history, beaches, and food.
6. The 6th best thing to do in Crete is to spend time at Elafonisi Beach. This pristine beach is located on the west coast of the island, about 72 km south-west of Chania. The clear, turquoise waters have brought travellers here for centuries and it was very busy when we were there as well. Not only does the lagoon have crystal blue waters with excellent visibility, but Elafonisi also has very gentle waves and is the perfect place to swim and relax.
5. Heraklion has attracted ever-greater attention as a wine destination in recent years and more than two-thirds of Crete’s vineyards are found here. The region accounts for about 80% of the island’s wine production. We went wine tasting in the nearby town of Dafnes, and highly recommend it. Not only is the setting extremely beautiful, but the wine tastings are also affordable and delicious.
4. The 4th thing you can’t miss in Crete, Greece is Matala beach. This beach is located 68km to the southwest of Heraklion, which is about an hour drive. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and is a true hippie town with some incredible cave and rock formations.
3. At number 3, we have the Knossos ruins, which are widely considered to be Europe’s oldest city. The Palace of Knossos is located just south of modern-day Heraklion, near the north coast of Crete. Built by the old civilization called the Minoans, it covers about 150,000 square feet or 14,000 square meters.

2. Chania was by far our favorite city in Crete. On one hand, it’s beautiful and different from the other cities in Crete, and on the other hand it’s a great base to explore the island’s highlights from. The city itself is located on the northwest coast and known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants.
1. Balos beach is the number one thing to do on Crete in our opinion. The panoramic views from above are some of the best we’ve seen throughout our travels so far. Balos is located in a wild, remote area about 1 hour to the west of Chania. It’s so spectacular that you may want to spend a full day here.

For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. Greece is the cradle of the European civilization, a quarry of mythology and ancient relics. On the Chalkidiki Peninsula we can visit the city of Thessalonica, the beaches of Katerini and Paralia, and from the boat we can take a look at the mystical monastery republic, Athos. Near the legendary Olympus Mountain we can take a look at the ‘rocks of gods’, the Meteora monasteries built on the sky-high cliffs. Athens’s well known building is the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The Agora was the marketplace of the ancient Athens, while the Plaka is a current, full of life eastern bazaar. From the capital the visitors can take journeys to the canal of Corinth and to the beaches of the Attican Riviera. From the dock of Pireus it is easy to take a boat and visit the islands of the Aegean and Ionic Sea. The islands tell us of Romans, Byzantines, pirates and knights. Among the olive tree gardens and orange trees white houses, temples and sunlit ruins are hiding. The sea is blue in the bays surrounded by beaches and on the terrace of a tavern the flavors of the Greek cuisine are always welcome.

The Venetians built massive fortresses to defend the island against the Turks Knossos was the capital of Crete at the time of King Minos, son of the god, Zeus, and the Phoenician princess, Europa. The Knossos Palace was a magnificent building with seven floors and around 1,400 rooms which served as living quarters, administration, storage and for courtly celebration. Most of the ruins are part of the new palace, as the first was built 2000 years before the birth of Christ. The Gortys Ruins are reminders of the moving history of an old town which was prosperous in the 5th century B.C. when Gortys became the most powerful town of the Messara Plain and throughout the olive groves between the hills can be found the scattered remnants of its past cultural riches. With its beautiful sandy beaches, the horseshoe-shaped bay of Matala is a popular coastal resort to which many come simply to experience the glorious sunsets in addition to the rich archaeological revelations of Phaistos Palace. Agia Galini is a quiet fishing village which, during the summer months, is a lively bathing resort on Crete’s south coast. However, it has managed to maintain its original atmosphere with fishing boats in the harbour and crystal clear water lapping the shoreline, plus the allure of its tavernas and restaurants. Agia Roumeli is best reached by boat as it is located on a rocky coast toward the Libyan Sea. Fishing villages are few and far between and most activity takes place in the mountains which rise up majestically from the Aegean. Picturesque harbours, ancient treasures, lost legends and Greek hospitality: who could ask for more?

The surrounding rocks are home to a total of thirty different species of bird among them such endangered species as the eagle, hawk, wild goose and bearded vulture. Kissed by the Greek sunshine beneath a clear blue sky the original beauty of Samaria Canyon is indeed a true natural wonder.
