Episode 8 - Pura Vida on a budget in Caribbean paradise
Our budget challenge is getting harder in this touristy country because this is the MOST expensive country of the trip by far! Enjoying swimming in the blue waters and white beaches in this backpacker hotspot.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica Budget Travel Vlog | Arenal Volcano, Rio Celeste, Hot Springs

La Fortuna offers so much variety when it comes to things to do and see in Costa Rica! We spent four days in La Fortuna and enjoyed every minute of it, especially because everything was so affordable! The local food was so flavorful and being immersed in such lush nature was absolutely breath-taking. If you're lucky, you might catch a view of the Arenal Volcano when it's not hiding behind the clouds. We were able to see the sunset over the volcano and it was a sight like no other! La Fortuna is amazing overall. Don't get us started on the waterfalls and the sky blue waters - watch for yourself! If you enjoy this video, please be sure to SUBSCRIBE for future content; we greatly appreciate it!

The Hertz/Firefly Car Rental in San Jose Costa Rica provided the WORST customer service we have ever experienced from a car rental place (They gave away the automatic car we reserved, only gave us an option to drive a manual car which we were unable to do, and even if we were able to drive manual they increased the daily rental price 10-fold).

We recommend you look elsewhere for a car rental ( or check out our truly AMAZING Uber driver and friend named ALEJANDRO who drove us all over Costa Rica.

Watch this video to see how we spent 4 days in Costa Rica for $439/pp. Prices can of course vary depending on dates, and the number of people you travel with. This is just to give you an idea!

Backpacking Central America Tips and Tricks

For the last two months Nellie and I have been backpacking Central America. We started in Cancun and will finish this week in San Jose.

In this video we wanted to touch on a few of the budgeting tips and tricks we've learned throughout this journey. Specifically Transportation, Accommodation, Food & Drink, and Activities.

All of these things if managed properly can make the journey absolutely amazing and save you a lot of money at the same time.

Nellie has been averaging about $40 per day over all of the expenses including some internal flights, rental car, and activities. I've been a bit higher at about $52 but I put that down to more food and drink than anything else.

It is however possible to backpack Central America at around $30 per day or less if you're really careful.

Hope these tips and info helps and that you are enjoying your journey or getting stoked on the adventure ahead!!

Cheers from Uvita Beach, Costa Rica!!

She Made Me Wanna Extend My Stay in Costa Rica! ???????? (San Jose)

I had limited time to spend in Costa Rica's capital, San Jose. The day was very bad and it rained all the time. However, I decided to go out there and explore the city center. I got food, checked out the local market and even got a haircut. Everything was overall great except for one thing.
I had just met a local Tica (girl) and it made me wanna extend my stay in San Jose just so I can spend more time with her. For some reason she had such a great energy!

What would you do if you were me? haha!!

ABOUT ME ????????‍♀️
Hello, I am Mackenzie Nelson (22 years old) from Southern California, United States. I am solo travel backpacker graduated online college in 2023. I LOVE vlogging and creating these videos for whoever wants to be inspired, learn new places, or binge travel videos.

FAQ’s ❓
-How do you afford to travel?
I have had 2 jobs since I was 15 years old and made sure to save at least 90% of that for travel and school. I always have a temporary job when I am home but hope to be able to travel full time to consistently make videos!
-Is traveling solo safe?
I want to say the answer to YES! With lots of caution to everything you do and following my ‘basic backpacker rules’ you should be able to remain safe!
See here for my backpacker rules:
-What has been your favorite countries?
I LOVED Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ecuador. I know this is a lot but they are all amazing for backpacking throughout the country, meeting international friends, and keeping to a backpacker budget!
