Should You Move To Canada During The Cost Of Living Crisis? | Rent, Transport + Groceries
After being abroad for most of the year, I was SHOCKED when I returned back to Canada and saw just how much prices have rose since I was gone. Real Estate is obviously the worst culprit in the cost of living crisis, but regular expenses like transport, groceries, going out to eat, have all increased substantially in the last couple of years. While Canada's immigration numbers have definitely increased and the countries population is now at 40 million, there is a large group of new immigrants who have chosen not to stay and either return to their home countries or another destination instead. A large reason to this has been the high cost of living, as well as a lack of high paying jobs. So if you are thinking of immigrating to Canada any time soon, I hope you will find this video helpful in going over what might be the best province for you to live in, as well as what you can expect as the average monthly expenses.

In this video I am going to give you an average supermarket tour in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I am going to show you the real food / grocery prices in Canada. Hope you enjoy it and will comment bellow.
Canada's after-tax monthly income is about $3,000 which totals around $36,000 per year. The U.S. sits just below Canada at approximately $2,942 per month, or roughly $35,300 per year. The real difference is seen in the cost of living. ... Finally, clothing is more expensive in Canada than in the United States.
In the U.S. you are only paying about CAD $44. Finally, clothing is more expensive in Canada than in the United States. ... If all the little things are added that cost more in Canada, the total is far more than the CAD $700 salary difference that was originally stated. By this measure, the U.S. is cheaper to live in.
Most people from the UK and Europe find the cost of living in Canada is significantly lower than their home country.
Canadian housing can be cheap compared with other developed nations – the average house price in Canada is around nine times the average annual wage. Though in some provinces, such as New Brunswick, it is as low as four times the annual wage. Prices are highest in Ontario (ten times the average wage) and Vancouver (fourteen times the average wage).
People moving to Canada with the proceeds of house sales from countries with more expensive housing can often buy a house in Canada with a considerably reduced mortgage.
This leaves more of their income for other activities and lowers their cost of living in Canada significantly.
Compared with many other western countries, although not the USA:
›› Food is cheaper in Canada.
›› Dining out and most forms of recreation are cheaper in Canada.
›› Petrol / Gasoline and cars are cheaper in Canada.
›› Power is cheaper, but you use more power to heat your house in a typical Canadian winter.
›› Car insurance is very expensive in Canada.
Mercer carried out an extensive cost of living survey for overseas workers in 2018. The survey covers 209 cities and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
The survey revealed that Toronto and Vancouver (joint 109th) has the highest cost of living in Canada, followed by Montreal (147th), Calgary (154th) and Ottawa (160th).
The survey found that Canadian cities have lower living costs than many other locations in the developed world.
Since the last survey Canada as a whole is becoming slightly more expensive relative to other cities. Toronto (109th), jumped ten places due to an increase in expatriate rental accommodation costs.
The rankings for Canadian cities out of the 209 cities surveyed are:
Vancouver (109th)
Toronto (109th)
Montreal (147th)
Calgary (154th)
Ottawa (160th)
Basic expenses
Food will be a basic expense. Costs will depend on the size of your family. This cost can double if you often eat in restaurants or choose to buy specialty items.
Clothing expenses may be less than 10% of your take-home pay. You may spend a lot more if you buy your clothing at designer stores. Second-hand shops sell used clothing and furniture at very low cost.
Alcohol and cigarettes
Some people include alcohol and cigarettes as part of their budget. Alcohol and cigarettes are expensive in Canada because they are heavily taxed.
Transportation
Many Canadian families have one or more cars. Canadians either buy their cars new or used or they lease them, which is a form of rental.
Make sure you think of all the costs before you decide to buy or lease a car. For example, when you own a car you will have to pay to keep it working well, for gas, monthly loan payments, registration and insurance. When you lease a car you will sign a contract to have the car for a set period of time. You will pay the same costs as you do when you own a car.
Many Canadians use public transportation, walk or bike.

In our neighbourhood there is a local grocery store called Stongs Market. In Stongs you can find lots of different products ranging from diary to produce. Comparing it to Cayman, the prices are a little cheaper, but still the prices have gone up in the few years being away.
