Bats and the novel coronavirus

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China has infected nearly 10,000 people and killed over 200 others. It has been reported that the virus likely originated in bats but no bats were sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market where the outbreak started.
In 2018, Kerala confirmed its first case of Nipah virus. Bats have been on the radar of scientists ever since.
They serve as hosts for numerous viruses including Ebola virus and coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and novel coronavirus. Last year, researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore used Melaka virus, MERS coronavirus and influenza A virus and tested the responses of bats, mice and humans to these viruses.
While inflammation was high in the case of humans and mice, it was significantly reduced in bats' immune cells. The activation of an important protein, NLRP3, reduced inflammation significantly in bats. Emerging zoonotic viruses (bat‐related or not) have often led to extermination of bats. However, they perform several ecosystem services like pollination, seed dispersal agricultural pest suppression, massive mosquito control and guano.

STORYTIME: Traveling to China during the Initial Corona Virus Outbreak January 2020 (Harbin/Nanjing)

It has officially been one full year since I went to China in January 2020. I went to go visit my boyfriend, Steven, who was living in Nanjing, China and teaching English abroad. What was meant to be a 2-week romantic getaway turned into us changing plans and leaving the country early due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In this video, we joined together to do a retelling of this suspenseful story. We take you through the whole trip - starting off with some lighthearted and breathtaking travels throughout Nanjing and Harbin, and ending with us deciding to fly home to the United States due to the growing uncertainty.

This was the *very* beginning of the Corona Virus... before it even hit the news channels back in the United States. The information we knew at the time was very minimal, it was quite confusing, and no one truly knew the severity or potential of the situation quite yet. Reflecting back, I am so grateful for our health and safety, and I continue to wish good health for all of us as time goes on.

This is definitely a segment of life I will never forget as long as I live. We hope you enjoy hearing this story! ♥️

Vietnam Rising: Inside The China Market

From the Delivering Asia Communications and C9 Hotelworks event Vietnam Rising: Inside The China Market

LIVE WEBINAR: Thursday 7th May, 2pm-2:45pm Bangkok Time

With Vietnam on the cusp of their journey back from the disruption of Covid-19, it’s time for the travel and hospitality industry to start planning for what’s next. With long-haul markets not expected to return in the short term, China is both strategically, and by virtue of its proximity, the logical international inbound force to drive the rebound of the tourism industry.

Another focus of the event is to provide an update on the current progress of the reopening of domestic travel within Vietnam and how this will lay the groundwork for the re-entry of overseas tourists. Along those lines a special segment will be a recovery toolkit for hoteliers and what critical processes need to be planned now.

• Will Chinese travel abroad in the remainder of 2020?
• Have they visited Vietnam before?
• Which destination in the country will they travel to?
• What demand generators matter most to Chinese tourists?
• What is the specific preference of China travellers to Vietnam for hotels (budget to five-star)?
• How has the market changed and how do hotels reach it?
• How can hotels leverage the China market for re-openings?
• What is the status of domestic travel in Vietnam today and how lay the stage for the future?
• How can hotels and tourism establishments prepare for a post COVID-19 recovery?

These are some of the big questions which will be answered as C9 Hotelworks unveils its China Vietnam Travel Sentiment Survey 2020, conducted at the end of April in collaboration with Delivering Asia Communications.

Speakers

• David Keen, Chief Executive Officer, QUO

China reopens borders for first time since COVID; Thousands flow in through airports

After nearly three years of closed borders, China has finally reopened it's borders. Families reunite as one of the world's longest border closures comes to an end. Hong Kong resident says he almost forgot there's life without restrictions.
The ability of residents of the semi-autonomous southern Chinese city to cross over is one of the most visible signs of China’s easing of border restrictions imposed almost three years ago, with travelers arriving from abroad no longer required to undergo expensive and time-consuming quarantines.
Those crossing between Hong Kong and mainland China, however, are still required to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within the last 48 hours — a measure China has protested when imposed by other countries.

Hong Kong has been hit hard by the virus, and its land and sea border checkpoints with the mainland have been largely closed for almost three years. Despite the risk of new infections, the reopening that will allow tens of thousands of people who have made prior online bookings to cross each day is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Hong Kong’s tourism and retail sectors.

On a visit to the station Sunday morning, Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee said the sides would continue to expand the number of crossing points from the current seven to the full 14.

“The goal is to get back as quickly as possible to the pre-epidemic normal life, Lee told reporters. “We want to get cooperation between the two sides back on track.

Communist Party newspaper Global Times quoted Tan Luming, a port official in Shenzhen on the border with Hong Kong, saying about 200 passengers were expected to take the ferry to Hong Kong, while another 700 were due to travel in the other direction, on the first day of reopening. Tan said a steady increase in passenger numbers is expected over coming days.

“I stayed up all night and got up at 4 a.m. as I’m so excited to return to the mainland to see my 80-year-old mother, a Hong Kong woman identified only by her surname, Cheung, said on arrival at Shenzhen, where she was presented with “roses and health kits, the paper said.

Hong Kong media reports said around 300,000 travel bookings from the city to mainland China have already been made, with a daily quota of 60,000.

Limited ferry service also was restored from China's Fujian province to the Taiwanese-controlled island of Kinmen just off the Chinese coast.

The border crossing with Russia at Suifenhe in the far northern province of Heilongjiang also resumed normal operations, just in time for the opening of the ice festival in the capital of Harbin, a major tourism draw.

And at Ruili, on the border with Myanmar, normal operations were resumed after 1,012 days of full or partial closure in response to repeated outbreaks blamed partly on visitors from China's neighbor.

So far, only a fraction of the previous number of international flights are arriving at major Chinese airports.

Beijing's main Capital International Airport was expecting eight flights from overseas on Sunday. Shanghai, China's largest city, received its first international flight under the new policy at 6:30 a.m. with only a trickle of others to follow.

Since March 2020, all international passenger flights bound for Beijing have been diverted to designated first points of entry into China. Passengers were required to quarantine up to three weeks.

60: Why China's Aggressive COVID-19 Containment Isolates China Until Vaccine is Produced Dr. Savu

Dr. Michelle Savu, Deputy Chair of Surgery at Beijing United Family Healthcare BJUC, interviews Dr. Babak Javid who is an Infectious Disease Expert at Tsinghua University in Beijing which is considered the Harvard of China.

In this revealing and informative interview which is part one of a multiple-part series, they discuss how China's recent aggressive, protective and draconian COVID-19 pandemic policies of coronavirus containment combined with banning foreign nationals from China for an indefinite period of time are destined to isolate China as an island from the rest of the world until a vaccine is finally developed which could take more than 18 months. This is big news for foreign nationals currently in China and even bigger for those wishing to return, but cannot. The reason for the banning of foreign nationals is because this containment policy has resulted in a relatively low rate of infection of their overall population which has resulted in a lack of acquired herd immunity, leaving them as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to COVID-19 back spreading or reintroduction of the virus by outsiders.

HOW IS IT TO BE IN CHINA DURING THE COVID-19/CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

China is expanding its unprecedented efforts to contain a deadly new coronavirus, imposing travel restrictions on tens of millions of people. The epicenter of the outbreak is the city of Wuhan, in Hubei province but it has now spread to at least 10 cities, all of them on lockdown.

My Chinese friend, Xiao Ya lives in the Anhui province. I wondered how she was doing and if she was willing to tell about her situation to the rest of the world. She agreed. So in this video she will tell you about her life in lockdown, about her perspective upon the whole situation in China regarding the Covid-19/Coronavirus.
