Tourism says hotels ready to open in a month, Asonahores says hotels are Covid-prepared

In the announcement on Sunday, 17 May 2020, about the sectors that are authorized to resume activities in recovery phase one, President Danilo Medina did not include the tourism sector. Earlier in the week, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García had said that the local hotel and travel sector is ready to begin receiving visitors in about a month. He said international travel will move to the countries that have best handled the virus. He said that the tourism industry is already incorporating the health protocols to begin receiving visitors.
He said once the Caribbean opens to international travel, the Dominican Republic will be ready to safely host tourists. He said the country is ready regardless whether this happens in a month, two or three months.

Plans to resume flights July 3
Another article states:
On June 2, just one day after the end of the state of emergency, commercial flights between the United States and the Dominican Republic would begin. At least we know of confirmed reservations with the US airline Delta for the New York-Santo Domingo route.

Update: May 17, 2020 10:30 PM
The Presidency announced phase one of a four-phase plan to take activities to the new normal within the coronavirus epidemic.

The President says the objective is to restore economic activities yet not stimulate a spike in coronavirus spreading.

The government authorized most small businesses to open as of Wednesday, 20 May 2020.

The announcement coincides with the reduction of curfew hours that now will be from 7pm to 5am. In the past, the curfew was from 5pm to 6am. On Sundays, the evening curfew will be from 5pm to 5am.

The government announced new work schedules nationwide as a measure that seeks to reduce the demand for transport. Ordered to open at 7am are: supermarkets, pharmacies, construction and export free zones. Also mining, farming and agro-industry.

Ports and airport services should start at 7am. These are only authorized to handle cargo and humanitarian flight services. The President says that during phase one of the easing of restrictions plan, Dominican borders will continue closed to passengers arriving by sea, land or air.

Government offices are to open as of 8am. The government is authorized to operate with 50% of its staff and to go reinstating staff as needed.

At 9am, hardware stores, vehicle dealerships, workshops, banks, furniture and appliances stores and services sector are ordered to open.

Still to remain closed are schools and entertainment businesses, such as movie houses, theaters, gyms, artistic, sports and cultural activities.

The government bans marches, meetings, caravans, that would have been taking place during these electoral times. The presidential and congressional election is scheduled for 5 July 2020.

Restaurants are authorized to continue offering exclusively delivery services. Gambling and hotel services are still in lockdown.

Micro businesses can operate with a maximum of five workers, or no more than 50% of the employees. Small businesses (those with 10-50 workers) can operate with a minimum of 10 people and no more than 50% of their staff. While medium and large companies can resume work with at most 25% of their workers at the same time on the premises.

The government announced that if all goes well with this phase, as of 3 June 2020, the country will begin Phase 2 of the easing of restrictions, with more businesses and activities authorized to return to work.

Covid 19 Update May 17 Dominican Republic

State of emergency extended to June 1
DR1 News for Friday, 15 May 2020
The Chamber of Deputies has given the Medina administration an extension of 15 days on the National State of Emergency. The government had requested an extension from 18 May to 11 June. The extension will now be from 18 May to 1 June 2020 once approved in the Senate and signed by the President.

The resolution returns to the Senate for passing. The Senate had previously approved the bill for the 18 May to 11 June period requested by President Danilo Medina.

The National State of Emergency enables the government to carry out fast-tracked financial and procurement operations. Muckracking journalists and political opposition have produced substantial evidence of major irregularities in government procurement for the health crisis. The independent investigations have resulted in the cancelation of 4 major contracts.

Getting Tested for COVID-19 in the Dominican Republic

Hello! Today I'm taking you along with me on my journey to get tested for COVID-19. Dominicans can now get tested for free, but that's not the case for most visitors. Thankfully, I have insurance provided by my job, or else I would have had to pay for the test. The testing center I went to was called Samaritan Salud Solidaria.
