How Scientists Are Restoring The Great Barrier Reef | Travel + Leisure

Despite mass coral bleaching events in the summers of 2016 and 2017 that badly damaged parts of the reef, much of the marine park — roughly the size of Japan — continues to thrive. A visit to the largest living structure on Earth remains an experience of a lifetime.

Over the past couple of years, coral has regenerated and local scientists have developed innovative ways to foster coral growth both in and out of the water.

Johnny Gaskell and his team have been propagating coral in nurseries built within the marine park, and also in custom-built tanks where the corals spend four to five months growing before being planted back into damaged reef sites.

Red Coral from Corsica documentary of Patrick Voillot

English :
Deutsch :
French :

This film will take you into the world of silence or the big blue like a virus which drives men to risk their lives every day, diving to dangerous depths searching for the “blood of the sea”, an incomparable jewel: the red coral.

In the south of the island of Corsica in France, at the mouths of Bonifacio, the red blood coral grows, the most beautiful in the world and the most crystalline.

It has fascinated men for centuries. Because of its red colour and its mineral skeleton it was for long compared to the blood of the mythological gorgon killed by Perseus.

In this film you will dive with a real coral fisherman, who risks his life every day by descending to depths of more than 80 metres.

You will participate live in the gathering of red coral from Corsica.

You will be as near the coral fishermen as you ever could be. They live daily with anguish, disappointment and fear, but also passion and joy which they experience when they find these marvels of nature.

This is a veritable adventure on land and in the depth of the sea, which takes you to Italy, to Torre del Greco near Naples, where the red branches are cut, carved and sculptured. Thereafter they are exported to the rest of the world for making jewelry.

You will then discover the secrets of jeweler FRED and his creations.

Four Years For the Reef by Coral Gardeners

In 2017, we founded Coral Gardeners on a shared dream, and we allowed ourselves to dream big. Today, we are revolutionizing ocean conservation with a worldwide movement.

We created this video to celebrate what Coral Gardeners is today, and what it will become tomorrow. This is a special tour to see how our project has grown in the last few years.

Cheers to everyone who joined our journey along the way and those to come!

You can adopt a coral on our website to help us keep going:

THE CORAL GARDENERS

Local Tahitian youth in Moorea have seen the coral reef start to bleach over the last few years and they've decided to take action.

They've banded together to form a NGO group called 'The Coral Gardeners' which has 2 goals.

The first goal is to raise awareness & hopefully change the mindset of people around the world. They've done this through going to school classrooms, holding conferences and bringing awareness to the issues online.

The second goal is coral restoration which is where the gardening comes in. Check out the video above to see how it's all done.

Coral Gardening at Barefoot Manta | Drawaqa Island, Fiji

The coral reef next to Barefoot Manta in Fiji's Yasawa Islands is one of the most amazing reefs I have ever seen. And the reason behind this is the work of the on-site team of Marine Biologists who replant coral by hand every day.
I had an awesome 2 days at Barefoot Manta, learning all about coral gardening, enjoying the amazing beaches, and chilling out at my beachfront glamping bure.

Let's Save The Reef // Zimy Da Kid X Coral Gardeners

Coral reefs are home to one quarter of marine life. To many people living on islands, they provide a natural protection against storms as well as a fundamental source of food. We are all connected to the ocean because it provides us more oxygen than trees and forests.

However, due to global warming, pollution and other human activities, coral reefs are dying all over the world. According to scientists, they’ll be all gone within just a few decades. Some even say that there won’t be any corals left by 2050. We have to act while we still can !

On a tiny island lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there’s a group of young and passionate people that are trying to fight this war. They are called the Coral Gardeners.

When corals break and then lay on the ocean floor, they are attacked by bacteries living in the sand and they die soon afterwards. The coral gardeners pick these broken pieces of corals before they die. They, then, leave them on resting tables for a few weeks until they are strong enough to be planted back in the reef. Once done, modern day pirates like @tehaps pick them up and plant them back to restore the reef. Then, they slowly start growing again and give hope for the future of our oceans !

If you want to fight this war with us, share this video and go to to adopt your own coral !

Maoritai, The Coral Gardener - Free Range Humans Episode by Corona

One of our original gardeners, Maoritai, is featured in the Free Range Humans series, which highlights individuals who have left behind a conventional life indoors to preserve nature in unprecedented ways.

In this episode, Maoritai explores his connection to the ocean as an islander and how his whole life has been dependent on a healthy reef, leading to his mission with us to save what remains of the ocean’s coral life.

Solomons - Walande Island - The Final Story

Walande was an artificial island - a rock platform made from lumps of coral gathered from the reef over several hundred years. In 1966 it had 200 inhabitants and the houses were built flat on the rock surface. In 2002, when visited by BBC Blue Peter presenter, Simon Thomas, the houses were built on tall stilts and there were 1,200 inhabitants. In recent years climate change has caused the sea level to rise and turbulence has all but destroyed the island. In 2016 there were only 4 inhabitants. Dr Ivan Haigh, Associate Professor at the National Oceanography Centre, assesses the impacts of Climate Change.

Coral Garden

First Dive Since COVID-19 Lockdown - Coral Nursery Maintenance - 22 May 2020

On Friday 22nd May 2020 a team of six divers completed 3 dives on our East End nursery and out-plant sites to conduct inspections, maintenance and collect data.

This video is for the purpose of a project record rather than a promotional piece. So, it is rather long at 8 minutes, but provides great insight in to what happens on a coral nursery maintenance dive. Think about if you would like to volunteer or take a class from our resident marine biologist on your next visit to Cayman, or just like the zen of a 'wax-on-wax-off' kind of dive.
If you watch until the end, you'll get a little sharky treat too. This guy hung out with us the entire first dive.

Nine weeks without any care, reminds us why coral nurseries work and how they can fail. Hanging corals high in the water column accelerates their growth, but also speeds up one of their biggest enemies- algae. Without cleaning, the corals will die.

We are very pleased to report that some of the trees were in pristine condition and only needed minor care. The majority of most corals trees remain viable with only one in particular needing extensive work and another that was totally overcome by algae with a 95% loss.

A more detailed report is being prepared for the Department of Environment.
We need to get in one more dive at each site urgently and then we can revert to a monthly maintenance cycle until the lockdown is lifted.
