How Sikh Chefs Feed 100,000 People At The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Temple In New Delhi, India

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib temple in New Delhi, India, feeds 30,000 to 40,000 people every day for free. And during religious holidays, that number can swell to well over 100,000. To keep up with demand, the kitchen uses machines to help cook a majority of its food.

We visited the temple during the birth anniversary of the 10th guru, Gobind Singh, to see how it prepares a celebratory feast in such big batches.

How 5 Tonnes Of Sweet Rice (Zarda) Is Cooked In The World's Largest Cauldron In India | Big Batches

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan, India, is one of the holiest Sufi sites in the world. There, devotees cook a sweet rice dish in a deg, or cauldron, for the thousands of pilgrims who visit the shrine each day. The cauldron is one of the largest in the world, measuring 37 feet wide and 15 feet deep, with a capacity to cook 4,800 kilograms. We visited the shrine to see how these devotees prepare their prasad, or religious offering, in such big batches.

How 150,000 People Are Fed For Onam In Kerala, India | Big Batches | Insider Food

Onam is a 10-day harvest festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It marks the first month of the Malayalam calendar and commemorates the return of the mythical King Mahabali from the underworld to his home in Kerala.Mahabali's return and the harvest are celebrated with floral artwork, traditional dances, boat races, and a traditional feast known as the Onam sadya.

The feast has 15 to 20 distinct dishes, but in some cases, it can have as many as 40. All of the dishes are served on banana leaves and eaten by hand. Eaters use rice as the vehicle for forming the perfect bite. While the traditions of Onam are rooted in Hinduism, Keralites across the state, regardless of religion and caste, enjoy the festivities and a traditional meal.

We visited Vinayaka Caterers in Kerala, India, to see how it prepares sadyas for 150,000 people.

How 70,000 Bowls Of Haleem Are Made Daily During Ramadan In India | Big Batches

During the month of Ramadan, the most popular restaurant in Hyderabad, India, is Pista House, which builds a massive makeshift kitchen that can cook 200,000 bowls of haleem every day.

In Hyderabad, haleem is the go-to meal for Suhoor, the morning meal before the day's fast, and Iftar, the evening meal that breaks the fast.

This thick and creamy stew arrived in Hyderabad from Arabia in the 17th century. In Arabic, it's referred to as harees, which means to squash and accurately describes this hearty dish that is pounded by wooden mallets until it achieves its rich and gooey consistency.

Since its introduction to Hyderabad in the 17th century, the dish has steadily evolved into something distinctly Hyderabadi. While it is still made with traditional ingredients like goat and wheat, and pounded with traditional wooden paddles, Hyderabadi haleem has a distinct flavor that combines ample amounts of ginger, garlic, masala, and ghee.

In 2010, Hyderabad haleem was added to India’s geographical indication status list, a list that both acknowledges and protects the provenance of haleem and prohibits the sale of products labeled Hyderabad haleem if they're not made in Hyderabad.

To find out how Pista House makes enough haleem to feed 70,000 people, we visited its central kitchen in Hyderabad, India.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! The street food culture in India is one of the most vibrant and unique scenes you can find in the world. But beyond street food, you can learn about the people and culture through other means, like we did in this video. Join us for a special episode where we introduce one of the most prominent Gurudwara’s in India, and learn about Sikhism and the importance of langar in Indian communities.

Gurudwara’s are places of worship for Sikhs, however anyone is welcome to the Gurudwara regardless of their religion, ethnicity, gender, etc… The Darbar Sahib (scriptures) is the centrepiece in every Gurudwara, and the scriptures are sung and explained inside the Gurudwara, so that everyone can learn. At Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the main hall is beautifully decorated and the music is fantastic.

Another essential component of Gurudwaras, is the langar. Langar is a community kitchen and meal. The meal is always vegetarian and is always free. Members of the community from different backgrounds join together in the langar hall to eat the same meal together. The Gurudwara may see between 10,000 or 100,000 people in a day. In this video, we show you the hard work that is put in by the Sikh community every single day to feed those coming into the Gurudwara. This experience was humbling and wonderful, and we are so thankful for this opportunity. We would like to extend our thanks to the members of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib for welcoming us in and teaching about Sikhism, Gurudwara and langar. We would also like to give a huge thank you to Gaurav for making this happen and sharing this experience with us!

We hope you learned something new and enjoyed coming on this journey with us! If you enjoyed it, please let us know in the comments!
