We’ve been feeling seasick but, in a homesick kind of way. Like a fish out of water, we start drying out and struggle to breathe if we’ve been away too long. So, to say this past year has left us parched would be an understatement.
Our boat is still a couple of months away from us being able to move aboard and sail away. Patience has never been my virtue.
And, it's our 17th wedding anniversary celebration! So, we decided to quench our thirst and do something we have never done before. Charter a boat.
Which is funny because the first thing we tell people when they ask us for advice on how to get into sailing is: Look for a sailing club near you, take a sailing course and/or charter a boat.
If you’ve been following along for a while, then you already know we didn’t do any of this when we started. We bought a boat, then learned how to sail and only joined in our first sailing club race last year. We’ve also been known to roll boulders uphill, but we don’t advise it. It’s our public service, we do things the hard way, so you don’t have to.
Typically, we don’t recommend anything we haven’t personally experienced. Yet we’ve been encouraging people to charter a boat for years. In theory it’s a good idea but what is the reality? What is the cost? Is it worth the cost?
We’re about to find out. Join us in Phuket, Thailand as we set sail for a week on our first sailing charter.

After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.

In 2016 we set off to explore the world on a sailboat with absolutely no previous experience. We didn’t know what to expect or how to budget for such an unknown lifestyle.
Sure, we had done several google searches on “how much does it cost to sail around the world” but we couldn’t find anything all that helpful (sooo much more info out now). It was mostly a bunch of hypotheticals or listicles of what to consider.
Some things were easier to guess at, like how much we would spend on food (because we’re still going to eat). But we had no idea what we would be spending on things like fuel, repairs, and maintenance.
Over the past four years, we’ve sailed to seven countries and put over 13,000 nautical miles under our hulls.
We’ve learned a lot in that time and learned a lot about our spending habits in this new salty life.
Everyone always says BOAT is just an acronym for Bust Out Another Thousand. And in the beginning, it felt that way. The first year was buying and outfitting for off the grid and it was a total wallet buster!
But since then, we’ve been able to stick to our budget pretty closely and we’ve been pleasantly surprised.
So, what does it cost to sail around the world?
Not many people are willing to share their personal expenses or talk about money (so please be kind). But it’s hard to plan a big life change on hypotheticals. So, here is what it costs us to live and travel full time on a sailboat.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
Because... Life is an adventure!
Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A debate as old as time itself! Which is better, a catamaran or a monohull? I'll give away the answer here: like all boats, both are a compromise. However, they each are better for different missions. In fact while we love our Leopard 46, we will own monohulls in the future.

This is the kind of project I would take on if time and money were no object. This is not your average charter catamaran conversion. We deep-dive into the details of the Voyage 580, Top Secret.
Four electric motors, the biggest solar array I've ever seen, a massive lithium battery bank, and a million dollar investment, the boat is remarkable and so is the owner Rean Snyman, who along with friends and a couple laborers, completely rebuilt the boat in two years. It's an amazing boat.
I learned a lot talking to Rean about Top Secret. We get into the nitty-gritty in this walk through, talking details about carpentry, paint, gelcoat, wiring, A/C, electric drives from OceanVolt, sail handling, etc., etc. Prepare to geek out a bit on boats and systems!
