Rwanda: A Travel Story

This is a very short chronicle of my recent 6 day media trip to Rwanda, courtesy RwandAir & the Rwandan Development Board (RDB), in which I went around the country and learned a lot about Rwandan Culture and Tourism.

Rwanda has come a long way from its history of Genocide, turning what could have been the most crippling part of its' story into a triumphant one, with developments in Agriculture, Infrastructure, and of course, Tourism, which has become a big revenue source for the nation. It's impossible to show the true beauty of Rwanda, I hope my small story encourages you to visit and see more.

Activities (In no particular order)
Umuganda (Community Service - Yes, I helped clear roads and build a house).
King's Palace Museum & the Ethnographic Museum,
Musanze Caves
Kivu
'Kwitizina' (naming ceremony) of almost 20 newborn Mountain Gorillas
Genocide Memorial Center

All photos and videos were shot with my Nokia Lumia 1520, edited separately with Nokia Storyteller, and merged with Windows Movie Maker.

Rwanda - Back to the Garden

Rwanda is one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth - it's home to some amazing biodiversity, and its ecosystems are important far beyond its boundaries. This beauty is also functional - Rwanda's biodiversity, water and soil fertility nourish the wildlife and the people living in the area. An ambitious initiative aims to restore the country and reduce poverty in the region by actively improving the environment.

Colectivo Coffee Roasters // Rwanda 2019: TUK

A short doc piece shot and produced in 2019, edited in 2021 for Colectivo Coffee Roasters.
Telling the story of a small, women-led coffee co-op in Eastern Province Rwanda. Three small farmer groups came together to form Twongere Umusaruro, a group of what used to be only 60 women farming in Kayonza District. An NGO formed by Sustainable Harvest Coffee Importers and Bloomberg Philanthropies called Sustainable Growers
sought out TUK to be a part of their agricultural training program focusing on educating and empowering women farmers. They have grown to over 160 members, only 3 of which are men and in 2017 won one of the 30th best coffees rated by Coffee Review. They have built their own processing station, cupping lab and have started their own tourism program to educate customers on where their coffee is grown (on 10x the hectares than before their coming together). They are truly exemplary of what the future of women-led coffee can and should be and are role models for their nation and for coffee growing regions around the world. Seek out women-produced coffee!
“Women of the world take over, cause if you don’t the world will come to an end.” - someone other than Jim O’Rourke but that’s the only version of the song I know.
As always, thanks a million to Smayah Uwajuneza, Marc Minani for translation and transcription, Ben Miller for his production assistance, and to everyone else who helped along the way!

ORGANIC TOURISM: Tourism as a tool for sustainable development
Our goal towards a more sustainable food system needs collaboration from everyone, especially from consumer. As a restaurant, we do our part by sourcing organic produce directly from farmers and promote consumer’s understanding about farmers’ livelihood.
