Seyitdzhemaliddin Mosque, Ashgabat
This medieval mosque was built in the XV century. Unfortunately the building was almost completely destroyed by the Ashgabat earthquake, and today it comes in front of the tourist in a renovated version. The mosque consists of 17 rooms, including a square hall covered with a dome supported by for large arches. The hall walls are divided into three floors. Two wide and deep niches lead to the terrace. Spiral stairs located in the corner of the hall lead to the galleries on the first and third floors and also to the roof. In the yard, from northern side there stands a large ayvan (trestle-bed).

The mosque singularity is in its ornamental finishing. The mosque façade is engraved with an inscription saying that this building was erected under Abul-Kasim Babur, Temurid prince who was ruling in Khorasan (1447- 1457). The main portal arch is decorated with figures of fabulous dragons. According to historians these dragons are painted there as magic creatures, allegedly preserving Dzemal’s House from evil.

Turkmenistan Culture
Turkmenistan culture is slightly different from the cultural traditions of the neighboring Muslim states of Central Asia. The reason to this is that the ancestors of the Turkmen were nomadic tribes whereas the lands of modern Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were populated by settled tribes of farmers. This particular fact reflected on such aspect as cultural development of the Turkmen people. The basic milestones of Turkmenistan culture formation and development are related to the traditions of Turkic-speaking oguzs. The latter go back to the pre-Islamic period. The oguzs' traditions found their reflection in literature, music, folklore of the Turkmen.

The most known source of that period is the national oguz epos Oguz-nameh also belonging to the cultural legacy of the Turkmen, Azerbaijanis and Turks. It was passed orally from generation to generation and was written down in the mid-16th century. Another epic monument is the poem Kitabi Dede Korkud which reflected pre-Islamic tribal culture of the oguzs and the influence of Islam in the 11th - 12th centuries. Epic poems were performed by national singers-storytellers.
Turkmen Language

Turkmen spoken language developed on the basis of dialects of Turkic tongues, western oguz dialects in particular. It was also influenced by kipchak and old Uzbek (chagatai) languages. In 1928 Arabian alphabet was replaced by Latin, in 1940 Latin alphabet was replaced by Russian. Literary Turkmen language formed in the 20th century under the influence of tekhin tribal dialect. Modern Turkmen writing is based on Cyrillic, but in the 21st century it is going to be replaced Latin.

Turkmenistan (Traditions of Hospitality) Part 8

Welcome to my travelchannel. ☛☛☞☛
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Traditions of Hospitality:
Hospitality is a distinguishing feature of these friendly people and old well respected Turkmen traditions. Turkmen often judge a person by the way he treats his guests. A guest is greeted by phrase Khosh geldiniz! and besides that such ritual phrases as: How happy we are to see you! What an honor you have rendered to us! are a must.

The cloth with food on it is considered sacred and it is a sin to step on them. Before eating everyone according to tradition should praise the Lord. They say in the Orient: Every guest is sent by the Allah!”. It means that hospitality is not only the host's duty but also his sanctity. This tradition was born in the ancient times and has rooted in modern Turkmen lifestyle. In those days it was a simple form of security. People could not survive the hardships experienced in the desert without each other's support. Therefore, if somebody had been inhospitable to a traveler, even the relatives of such a person would have despised him. Turkmen have always considered bread and salt sacred. Stepping on them was a sign of misfortune.
Traditional Respect of Seniors

The respectful attitude toward seniors is also based on ancient traditions. It is considered as acceptable not to help them, to argue with them, to look at them frowningly or to show discontent, to wait for their gratitude for the rendered service or to remind of it. The customs demand honoring parents and seniors. Turkmen saying runs: Gold and silver do not grow old, the father and mother are priceless. The father as the family head has the right to evaluate his children's behavior and is obliged to protect them. Children should worship their mothers and respect them. The slightest display of disrespect or inattention to mother is not only denounced by people but also should be stopped on the spot.
Traditions of Morality

Turkmen are highly moral people. In the attitude toward life they cultivate hospitality, honoring of seniors, modesty, nobleness, truthfulness, honesty, boldness, sincere generosity. They say Only a noble person can keep his word.

Turkmen highly value the idea of honor. My honor is the honor of my family, my nation, my people, - they like to repeat now and then. Turkmen possess a strongly developed spirit of kinship.

Turkmen have always appreciated sincerity. Tell the truth even if it is against thee. Duty and obligation are honored, light-mindedness and garrulity are denounced.

Turkmen society has always negatively treated malignant gossip, saying that “the one who gossips with thee, can gossip about thee too. And such unworthy features as cowardice and ingratitude were also despised.

Turkmen value friendship and love, maintain friendly relations with neighbors. There is a number of national by-words about this: Before building a home find out who thy neighbor is, If your neighbor is happy you will be happy too, First of all take care of your neighbor, A neighbor next door is better than a brother far way.

Akhal-Teke Horses:
The Akhal-Teke from Turkmen Ahalteke, is a horse breed from Turkmenistan, where they are a national emblem. They have a reputation for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of palominos and buckskins led to their nickname Golden Horses. These horses are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are thought to be one of the oldest existing horse breeds. There are currently about 6,600 Akhal-Tekes in the world, mostly in Turkmenistan and Russia, although they are also found throughout Europe and North America. Akhal was the name of the line of oases along the north slope of the Kopet Dag mountains. It was inhabited by the Tekke tribe of Turkomans. The Akhal-Teke typically stands between 14.2 and 16 hands (58 and 64 inches, 147 and 163 cm). These horses are well known for those individuals who have a golden buckskin or palomino color, a result of the cream gene, a dilution gene that also produces the perlino and cremello colors. A number of other colors are recognized, including bay, black, chestnut, and grey. Aficionados of the breed claim that the color pattern served as camouflage in the desert. Many Akhal-Tekes have a natural metallic sheen to their coat, particularly noticeable in those with cream gene colors.

Experience the Beauty and Rich Traditions of a Turkmen Wedding in Ashgabat

The Turkmen wedding is a beautiful widespread holiday with centuries-old traditions, a special role of older relatives, a feast for the whole world, an impressive number of guests and celebrations for more than one, and sometimes three or four days in a row. For Turkmens, a wedding is a very important stage in life. Since ancient times, the Turkmens have honored the traditions of their ancestors; therefore, the ceremonies of the Turkmen wedding, in many ways, have remained unchanged today, although the new realities of the time, of course, have made certain adjustments to this celebration.

It takes at least three days to have a wedding in accordance with both − old and new rites. And taking into account the observance of all preliminary ceremonies - at least five. Weddings can now be held at any time of the year, whereas before the wedding season was highly dependent on the agricultural life of the population. The wedding is played as a well-rehearsed festive performance; it concentrates on the experience of the people, the experience of everyday life, moral and spiritual.

Preparing for a wedding requires some effort, both physical, moral and material. Young people mostly marry for love. Sometimes it happens that a distant relative is taken as a bride. Previously, the bride was not asked whether she wants to get married or not. Now parents, of course, match their son or daughter, asking their permission to see each other, agreeing on a future wedding and about the time.
Pause

The day before the wedding, a ceremony called atgulak takes place in the groom's house. The literal translation of the word Atgulak from Turkmen language means horse ear. Previously, these were scarves, now the gifts of the groom's mother to her new relatives (the bride's family), which are collected by the females of the family. In the courtyard, in big cauldrons, they cook traditional Turkmen dishes - pilaf, dograma, yarma, bake katlama, chelpek, and pisme.

As a gift, women bring wedding gifts, sweets in bundles of scarves of various sizes, fabric cuts, carpets, rugs. When they leave, they receive gifts that are equivalent to what they brought. The guest, touching their gifts, says the words: Bizede hudai etersin which means: «May we also have weddings in our house». This scarf or piece of fabric is a sign of celebration and prosperity. Sweets, small coins and toys, gifts for relatives and wedding guests are everywhere. The ceremony lasts about 3-4 hours, and then the guests go home.
Pause

The next day of the morning, the bride is dressed up and prepared for the arrival of the groom. Despite its extreme conservatism, a wedding dress is always distinguished by rich ornamentation and decorations.

Previously, certain days were chosen for cutting and sewing a wedding dress which was considered successful among Muslims. The well-being of the bride depended on this. The dress was cut and sewn in the bride's house from fabric obtained from the groom's house. On this occasion, her close friends gathered in the house. This dress was cut by a woman respected in the village, a mother of many children, starting with a blessing.

Today we have told you only about some of the wedding traditions of the Turkmen people, but even based on this, we can confidently say that Turkmen weddings are the most colorful, the most sincere and the warmest.

We wish you all the best. See you on the next releases. Bye Bye

Turkmenistan-Ashgabat Nisa fortress Part 19

Welcome to my travelchannel. ☛☛☞☛
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Nisa:
18 km to the west from Ashgabat there overlook the ruins of Nisa, the capital of ancient Parthia, existed at the turn of the I millennium BC and I millennium AD. In the III century BC New Nisa was the capital of Parthia and the Old Nisa fortress was an imperial residence at that time.Old Nisa was the place where palace and temple buildings were concentrated. There also located a treasury, huge wine warehouse and storerooms with numerous stocks. The fortress walls were 8-9 m thick in their base and were strengthened with 43 rectangular towers. In the period when Parthian Empire was a world power, Old Nisa was called as Mitridatkert after the name of king Mitridate I (171-138 BC) who ordered to build this city. Later on, the capital was transferred to Asia Minor, but a special attitude to Old Nisa was retained: there located tombs of the ruling Arsacids dynasty members, the kings came to Nisa to have big festivals and arrange offering sacrifices.
n 225 the Parthian Empire ceased to exist and Artashir, the former Arsacid governor, founded a new state ruled by Sassanid dynasty. With the purpose to expunge from the people’s memory everything that was connected with the Parthian rulers, he ordered to destroy Old Nisa. The Arsacid entailed estate was plundered and practically turned into ruins. The life there was restored only several centuries later, when Nisa became a part of the Arab Caliphate; however the fortress never gained its past might. Nowadays the former majesty of Mitridatokert can be seen in the archeologists’ finds – beautiful ivory horn-like pots (rythons), unique documents of the II-I centuries BC, written with a brush on potsherd pieces, amazing sculptures made of white marble and so on.The latest find in Old Nisa, a unique fresco fragment is a genuine masterpiece of Parthian pictorial art.
The fortress at Nisa was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007.

Colorful Culture of Turkmenistan Part 5

Welcome to my travelchannel. ☛☛☞☛
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Turkmenistan Culture:
urkmenistan culture is slightly different from the cultural traditions of the neighboring Muslim states of Central Asia.
