TOP 5 PLACES TO VISIT IN COLOMBIA | BEST CITIES IN COLOMBIA

FREEDOM:

Facebook:
Twitter:
Site:
Instagram: @noregretslifestyle
Huffington Post:

The country of Colombia has seen a massive increase in tourism and travellers in the past 10 years making it one of the best, most affordable and exciting places in the world, to travel to.

The north of Colombia, on the north side of the arm which connects Colombia with Panama, is situated on the Caribbean. Here you will find cities and towns like Cartagena de Indias, as well as Santa Marta, Barranquilla and more. South of the Caribbean is lush jungle, temperate rainforest and the big cities of Medellin, Bucaramanga, and the capital of Bogota.

So, prior to your travels to Colombia, you need to learn which cities and towns to spend time in, and which you can avoid. Here, I run down my top 5 places, cities and towns to visit when you travel Colombia.
I advise you to watch the video of top 5 places to visit in colombia, and the best cities in Colombia, instead of reading the description as the video outlines and shows images and video clips of the places in Colombia that I have visited to give you an idea of what to expect when you visit.

Starting at my 5th favourite place in Colombia, Santa Fe de Antioquia just outside Medellin. Incredible Colombian town on the opposite side of the valley from the touristy Guatape, Santa Fe is a beautiful escape from the growing Colombian tourism.

Santa Fe de Antioquia:

Number 4, is the tiny town of Salento. Nestled in the hills of the Colombian coffee region, Salento is a sleepy, classic Colombian town that even though it is becoming more and more popular, it still remains a little town that functions around coffee production and tourists visiting the Cocora Valley.

Click below to see the video of my top 5 things to do in Salento, Colombia.

I also have a few videos of my time in Salento, and the Cocora Valley.

Salento, Colombia Coffee Tour:
Cocora Valley, Colombia:

Number 3, best place in Colombia, are the twin towns of Santa Marta, and Taganga. Seperated only by a small hill, the coastal city of Santa Marta and Taganga are twin towns. Santa Marta is a big city catering to all your needs, and Taganga is a sleepy fishing village which acts as a perfect escape from the busy city.

Tour of the city of Santa Marta.

Walking through Taganga, Colombia:

Number 2 and number 1, favourite place or city to go to in Colombia has come in as a tie. I could not decide between Cartagena and Medellin so they have tied for the number 1 spot. Cartagena is the definition of enchanting, where simply walking the tight cobblestone streets feels special, with the only downside being the humidity.

Cartagena, Colombia |

Medellin is one of the most fun, characterfilled cities I have ever visited and I have only good memories from there. The beautiful greenery spread throughout the valley, the fast paced way of life, happy people, and again, only one downside which is the fact that its not on the ocean.

Parque Lleras, Medellin, Colombia:

Those are my 5 favourite places to visit in Colombia. I hope this helps when selecting the locations where to travel in Colombia and remember to subscribe and go through my channel for more first hand videos of each of these places mentioned in this top 5 list.

Travel Medical Insurance I use:
Get 5% OFF Hey Mondo:

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*

In today's travel vlog, we discuss the 10 Things You Should Never Do in Colombia and the Don'ts of Colombia. I really enjoy making these lists about the things not to do in Colombia or wherever.

Just like any where else you might have some Colombian culture shock and learning a little about Colombian culture can go a long way. There are some social rules in Colombian that every tourist and expat in Colombian should be aware of so you know what not to do in Colombia. This living in Colombia vlog applies to and covers Colombian culture shock, Colombian culture, Colombia, social rules in Colombia, expat in Colombia,What not to do in Colombia, Etiquette in Colombia, What not to do in Medellin, what not to do in Bogota, how to be polite in Colombia, visiting Colombia, tourism Colombia, life in Colombia vs usa, life in Colombia, living in Colombia, living in Colombia vs usa, expat living in Colombia, Colombia revealed, Colombia rules, Colombia travel guide, culture shocks in Colombia, Colombian food, moving to Colombia, and Colombia culture shocks.

After showing your the area in and around Cali in the previous episode it is now time for another tourist hotspot. In this last episode from Colombia my buddy Stefan and I are going to take you with us as we explore the most beautiful beaches in Colombia at the Tayrona National Park, do another tubing session in Palomino and hike through the green mountains around Minca where we check out waterfalls and learn more about Colombian coffee.

Starting in Santa Marta we explore the whole area - despite the fact that there are not so many things to do in Santa Marta itself there are numerous picturesque destinations all around, therefore we used the city as our transportation hub between the beaches in the east and the mountain village of Mince

In the next episode I show you how to prepare your own trip to Colombia by sharing my best Colombia travel tips followed by a packing list video.

Best Beaches in Colombia & Things to do in Santa Marta as shown in this episode:
Rodadero & Taganga
Costeno Beach & Tayrona Tented Lodge

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

COMUNA 13 - MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA | Eileen Aldis

In this vlog we visit Comuna 13 in Medellín, Colombia. This neighbourhood of over 156,000 people was once considered the most dangerous place in South America. It has been transforming since 2002 and is symbolic of the broader transformation of Medellín and Colombia. In 2015, the Colombian government installed escalators that allow people to travel up and down the steep hills quickly and easily. The installation of a metro cable as part of the public transportation has also played a role in increasing the accessibility of this part of the city. Our guide, Walter, told us about the history of the neighbourhood and how an art school called Casa Kolacho has been, and continues to be, instrumental in keeping children and teenagers away from gangs by teaching them how to paint graffiti, breakdance, and rap. For this reason, hip-hop culture is extremely important to the people here. The colourful graffiti tells the stories of Medellín's violent past, particularly in Comuna 13. A football pitch that was once the site of public executions is now a space for children to play. Images of elephants are prevalent as they represent long memory. Colombians want to remember what has happened here so that some things will not be repeated in the future. There are many other social programs and supports that continue to help Comuna 13 revitalize and renew. It now stands as an example for other parts of the world that massive change is possible. This was my favourite part of Medellín and the best day we spent exploring the city.

I highly recommend taking the tour we did, which you can learn more about here:

INTRO MUSIC - Spinning by Alex Britt

The rest of our music comes from Epidemic Sound.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia.

Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

Explore Cartagena Colombia. We're in love ????

We spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Cartagena and have come up with a list of things for you to do!

Cartagena is on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and therefore has lots of amazing beaches but also tonnes of culture. We start the day at the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas exploring the old fortress (castle) with it’s amazing views and old tunnels.

We then make our way into the up and coming and gentrifying area of Getsemani. It’s a vibrant area full of street art, many restaurants and squares that come alive at night. While here we explore the streets and also grab a bite to eat while having a Colombian beer.

Later we head to the old walled city of Cartagena to see what it has to offer. We buy some bracelets and then discover some music and dancers performing in a square. We also grab a Colombian coffee at the the coolest little coffee shop/book store in Cartagena called Abaco Libros Y Cafe.

Lastly we try to find the best views over the city to watch the sunset. Unfortunately the rooftop at the Movich is closed for a private event so we end up across the street at the Sofia Hotel.

Cartagena, Colombia is the sum of its incredible parts; its colonial, republican and modern architecture, the temptation of its vibrant nightlife, its cultural festivals, exuberant landscapes, magnificent beaches, outstanding gastronomic offerings and its important hotel and tourism infrastructure. It is a fantastic city that guards the secrets of its history in its walls and balconies, its buildings and its narrow, cobbled streets.
Framed by its beautiful bay, Cartagena de Indias is one of the best preserved and most enchanting cities in the Americas.

Cartagena de Indias, one of the most popular destinations on the rise in the world according to TripAdvisor

Cartagena began as a small fishing town that was colonised by Spanish, British, and French. One of the original towns sharing a rich history of pirates, independence, and worldwide importance in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cartagena has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in South America. Cartagena is full of beautiful beaches and natural places all around. The city is famous for its many historical sites, and incredible architecture. Cartagena gathers the best of a calm Caribbean town, with an artsy scene, and many things to do.

Castillo San Felipe De Barajas (San Felipe Castle), Cartagena:

The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is a fortress in the city of Cartagena, Colombia. The castle is located on the Hill of San Lázaro in a strategic location, dominating approaches to the city by land or sea. It was built by the Spanish during the colonial era. Construction began in the year 1536, and it was originally known as the Castillo de San Lázaro, It was expanded in 1657.

Wander through the tunnels of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle to discover the interior of the “guardian of Cartagena.” The Spaniards sought to fend off British attacks, and in 1657 they finished building this fortress on the hill of San Lazaro, thus taking control of the only access point to the city from the mainland. Great pictures of the bay can be taken from the castle.

Getsemani, Cartagena:

Getsemaní, the outer walled town, is less obviously impressive than Cartagena's old city but has some charming parts and is well worth exploring. In recent years it has been the focus of Cartagena's exploding gentrification and growing hotel industry, and boasts excellent bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as some superb street art on its derelict buildings.

The plaza in front of the Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad is a massive draw for locals and travelers alike come sundown, when street food vendors set up their stalls and a crowd of revelers sticks around until well after midnight.

Old Town, Cartagena:

Without doubt, Cartagena's old city is its principal attraction, particularly the inner walled town, consisting of the historical districts of El Centro and San Diego. It is a real gem of colonial architecture, packed with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces and mansions with their famous overhanging balconies and shady patios.

The best approach to experiencing the Old Town is to wander leisurely, savoring the architectural details, street life and local snacks along the way.
