Coimbra is historic, alluring, enigmatic and even monumental, as this city was once a capital of medieval Portugal, when it was newly born nation-state during the early 12th century. It is also often overlooked by visitors, cast under the shadows of the more popular cities of Lisbon and Porto. But when you do make a proper visit and get to know the city better, you'll be enamoured, like the way Coimbra cast its spell on me.
This is a city where king, queens and the royal court used to rule the kingdom of Portugal, where great poets, writers and academics create masterpieces, where architects and artists built monuments, with the crowning glory that is the Coimbra University, Portugal's oldest academic institution and one of Europe's (and the world's) oldest universities.
Come and join me as I show you beautiful Coimbra, and learn about its significance in Portuguese (and European) history and culture.

Enjoy a breathtaking virtual tour of the Portuguese city of Coimbra, the historic capital of Portugal (1131-1255) and famous for its university, one of the oldest universities in the world. The Coimbra University was created in 1290 by King D. Dinis in Lisbon and moved back and forth between Lisbon and Coimbra, until it was definitely established in Coimbra in 1537, by royal decision of King D. João III.
In this virtual tour, Zen Walks shows you several historic and contemporary features of the city, like the old convent of Convento de Santa Clara a Velha, the theme park of Portugal dos Pequenitos, and many narrow alleys and streets, while climbing all the way up to the University Campus, passing by some stunning viewing points overlooking the city of Coimbra below.
Along the way, you will see some university students in their traditional costumes, usually featuring a black cape.
We will also cross the Mondego river, and admire Coimbra's beautiful 12th century cathedral.

Walking in COIMBRA / Portugal ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Coimbra, in central Portugal is the country’s former capital. The city sees fewer tourists than the Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve. Visitor will see a medieval old town and historic University of Coimbra.
We also start our walk on the bank of the Mondego River. From there we enter the inner city with the garden Largo da Portagem and R. Ferreira Borges walking street with cafés and shops. We make a little detour via the Praça do Comércio before returning via the Igreja de São Tiago and seeing the main church Igreja de Santa Cruz.
The tour continues as we explore the narrow streets of the historic centre and eventually end up at the Botanical gardens.
We head further uphill and turn around after the prison to get back in to the city centre. The steeply stacked historic centre dates to Moorish times and is one highlight of Coimbra. We end up at the University of Coimbra at last enjoying the view over this city.
Note: there is a cut at 1:05:00 before going into the old town and up to the university
