Acatenango volcano is near the city of Antigua in Guatemala. Nearby is Fuego volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Watching Fuego volcano explode from Acatenango volcano is a highlight of the trek. The is great camping on Acatenango. Hiking with active volcanoes is a highlight for anyone interested in nature.

I have climbed the Fuego volcano (close to Antigua Guatemala) about 2 weeks before the big eruption. I was actually thinking of doing the hike once again, since my camera run out of battery and the only footage I could take with my phone...
It is not the usual hike that is offered by the tour agencies, but the guides - depending on the weather conditions - can lead you there. We were lucky, that our guides did.
If those were the normal eruptions of Fuego, I cannot image how it looked like when there is the big eruption.
I wasn't planning to publish this video since later on, but I just want my friend to see and understand how close to the elements and danger one lives here in Guatemala, especially close to the volcanos.

Climbing up on the majestic volcano Acatenango is far away from being easy... It requires strong physical and mental pace. Oh, it also includes plenty of pain! But I guarantee you that reaching up there is gonna be one of the best things you've done in your whole life! The eruptions of Fuego at night, will make all that pain go away :)

Camping on a Volcano-Fastpacking Guatemala-Episode 3
I love Guatemala and I love Volcanoes! This was my first fast-packing adventure, which means running or hiking as quickly as possible with everything on your back. Our team of 4 (Ali, Robin, me and our guide David) set out from Antigua and made our way through the beautiful Guatemalan countryside. The mission was to help Ali film a short VR180 film, I'll link to that here when it's done. In this episode, we trek up the saddle of Volcán Fuego (very active) and camp on Volcán Acatenango. All night we were treating to huge booms and eruptions from Fuego...the eve of my 40th birthday!

Volcano Acatenango and Vúlcan El Fuego..definitely one of the top things to do & see in Guatemala! This natural wonder is one of the main attractions of Guatemala, situated near Antigua. We did the famous 2 day hike with a tour and climbed the inactive Volcano Acatenango with a group of 15 people. We camped that night and were very lucky to see volcano El Fuego erupt in the distance with lava flowing down the rims. The next morning we woke up at 4am and climbed to the very peak of the volcano to see the sunrise next to Vúlcan Agua. It was absolutely stunning and one of the best things and experiences I have ever done in my whole life. If you are in Guatemala, I highly recommend doing this volcano tour!

Hiking and Camping on Acatenango Volcano-Guatemala
Hiking Acatenango is an epic 24 hour adventure. It's a beautiful hike through cloud forests, 360 degree views of every volcano in the area, a 'melt your face off' sunset, bright full moon and oh yeah, Volcan Fuego put on quite the firework show when we reached the summit.

Guatemala, oh how I love you! The Acatenango volcano hike in Antigua Guatemala is a once in a lifetime bucket list activity. Unless of course you're me and decide to do it again. And if I'm honest, I won't rule out a third time.
Hiking Acatenango in Guatemala is one of the most intense, crazy, exhausting things I've EVER done.
And I loved every minute of it, both times, well maybe haha.

We made a 2 day tour up the Volcan Acatenango from Sunday 18th till Monday 19th of November 2018. While staying in the base camp we witnessed the impressive eruption of the Volvan de Fuego. Seeing volcanic eruption so close was an unbelievable experience and one of the best adventures of my life.

Acatenango Volcano Hike Guatemala: Things Other YouTubers Won't Tell You | Hiking Without a Tour
This video documents my second experience at Acatenango Volcano, a much more successful trip than my first experience where we almost died in 2013.
In 2013, I lived in Guatemala for 6 months and made friends. We hiked with locals and police escorts a SECRET route and nearly died. It was too foggy to see anything, all of our gear was wet and improper and two of our group mates got lost for over an hour. I didn't sleep all night. And it was my very first experience camping! In 2020, my friend and I decided to hike alone since we both have backpacking experience. This video covers documentation of the hike in and the views we got at the top (and the wind!). You can also read about the full experience in this blog post here ____________________________
As you will see in my blogs, it IS possible to hike without a tour group, but you MUST have a working knowledge of Spanish and also have a good amount of backpacking experience (and by backpacking, I mean over night hikes- not the travel backpackers who have never camped)
EVEN SO, I personally recommend taking a tour either way. In fact, I would hope no one without experience would be dumb enough to attempt this alone. Acatenango is very challenging. It's not bad for the experienced backpacker, but you do need to carry in all your water and steep sandy climbing makes the 9 miles round trip feel like double.
Even if you do have experience, we learned that not taking the tour is probably not really worth the money savings, as you will read in my blog post. I highly recommend going with a tour group just to make it easier and to have a group of people to share the experience with and get to know.

A couple of last tidbits I want to share to negate any other youtubers who are misinformed:
1. Acatenango is NOT pronounce Ah-kih-ten-AYNGO. Please. Don't disrespect Spanish like that. It's Ah-kah-ten-AHNGO. You will hear me pronounce it properly in the video.
2. Acatenango is NOT an active Volcano. Fuego is active. It's next door. Fuego is the one that you watch from your campsite or the top of Acatenango. I mentioned this in the video, but my information source may have been inaccurate. I have since done some research because I'm seeing mixed info all over the internet.
As always, practice Leave No Trace principles when hiking! Even in Foreign Countries!

Acatenango Vulkan Wanderung und Höhenkrankheit in Antigua - GUATEMALA ????????
In Antigua Guatemala hatten wir auf unserer Weltreise die Chance einen Vulkan zu besteigen. Auf den Vulkan Acatenango werden unterschiedlichen Touren angeboten.
Vom Acatenango kann man direkt auf den Fuego blicken. Der Vulkan Fuego (Krater) ist nur etwa 3 Kilometer von unserem Basis Camp entfernt gewesen.
Leider konnten wir aber nicht über Nacht bleiben da Max ziemlich schlecht auf die Höhe reagiert hatte und Höhenkrank wurde. So mussten wir bei totaler Finsternis den Rückweg von 1.500 m ins Tal antreten.

ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE in Antigua Guatemala with OX Expeditions
In 2018, Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala killed hundreds of people.
Today, we're doing the Acatenango volcano hike to see it ourselves.
I'm not sure I accurately captured how insanely difficult this hike was. I quit at least 4-5 times on the way up. For the first hour or two, you are on a constant hike up in sand deeper than your ankles carrying a pack that's 30-40 pounds.
When I say (many times) that it was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done, I mean it.
But it's worth it. If you do this hike and decide, like me, that you want to quit, I hope you also do what I did and continue.
As you'll see in this video, you're going to be treated to some of the most incredible sights you'll ever see.
Oh, and forget about sleeping. Volcan Acatenango will keep you awake all night! ????

Volcán Acatenango in Guatemala - Volcano Hike, March 2018
A two day hike on and around Volcan Acatenago (13044ft / 3976m) and Volcán Fuego, near Antigua, Guatemala. Acatenago is the second largest Volcano in Guatemala, and has excellent views of the active Volcano, Fuego. The basic trip was 8 miles/5000’ of elevation gain, but we opted for an additional excursion which brought us to the ridge of Fuego to get close to the lava. We spent the night on Acatenango and then hiked to the peak before dawn to watch the sun rise from the top.
Seeing the active volcano Fuego erupting at night was one of the coolest and most surreal experiences of my life, and the sunrise atop Acatenango was stunning.
I edited all of this on my phone, using iMovie, while on airplanes. Pretty amazing what we can do with our phones these days.
