Although only a couple of decades old, it seems like Mahesh Prasad has been a part of Mysore's culinary scene forever. Hugely popular with locals for its all day vegetarian offerings, and I suspect, also for its cosy, homely setting that conveys to diners the comforting, gold ole vibes of yesteryear, I stopped by to savour a wholesome vegetarian thali, that finds its culinary roots in South Canara albeit in a flavour tone that is suited to local preferences, a delicious bonda soup, a dish that doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves, and some more. I got a chance to taste a simple but nutritious and satisfying vegetarian meals at Mahesh Prasad veg restaurant which is one of the popular restaurants in Mysuru, Karnataka. The vegetarian thali or the meal costs INR 90 and is to be paid upfront and coupon has to be taken before having the meal. Overall, a nice experience and the dishes were hot, flavorful and not spicy.

Ask any denizen of Mysuru for the ‘tuppada dosae’ hotel and chances are you will be directed to this quaint shop that has stood the test of time for over eight decades in the bylanes of Ramachandra Agrahara. Begun by Mr Hollappa in the 1940s, this breakfast-only eatery is now run by his son, 86-year old Mahadevappa, and grandson, Mahesh. The must-try (actually one of only three items on the menu) here is the scrumptious Tuppa Dosae, roasted with liberal lashings of ‘vanaspati’ ghee, to accommodate “taste and budget” as pointed out by Mahesh. I dropped in for a quick chat and breakfast during a recent drive through the city.

An eatery that began the Kamat Yatriniwas group’s foray into highway restaurants twenty seven years ago, Kamat Lokaruchi in Ramanagara serves the nourishing fare of rural Karnataka in an earthy atmosphere that seeks to connect diners to the land. Traditional staples are cooked over old fashioned stoves fuelled by wood to recreate authentic flavours of yore, the culinary philosophy employed here also shuns the use of artificial color and additives. Since they first opened doors, numerous eateries have mushroomed on the Mysuru highway, but even today, over quarter of a century later, Kamat Lokaruchi reigns supreme as one of the most popular eateries on the route. I caught up with Narayan Kamat, son of the late A. S. Kamat who established the Kamat Yatriniwas group, and also explored the kitchens and some wholesome dishes here. Every city has its popular morning traditions, Mysuru too has its share of them. A delicious one though seems to be that of going for a long walk around Kukkarahalli lake followed by a steaming, hot breakfast at a food rickshaw, Upahara Darshini, popularly known as Deepu Gaadi. The popular draw here is the set masala, smaller than your usual dosa, perhaps to let its fans indulge in more than one of these scrumptious beauties. On a recent dash into Mysuru, I took time out to experience half of this popular tradition, no points for guessing which half, followed by a delicious cup of filter kaapi. Breakfast At Upahara Darshini (Deepu Gaadi)
I paid Rs. 70 (usd 1) for a single thatte idli with a vade, and a plate of set masala dose. The thatte idli is soft, a bit pasty, but goes well with the chutney. The set masala dosa though is the dish to try here. The dose is well roasted, crisp and translucent in the centre, revealing flecks of a spicy red chutney smeared within.

Tasting Popular South Bengaluru Special Banana Leaf Meal At UDUPI SRI KRISHNA BHAVAN | 20 VEG Dishes

When it comes to festive vegetarian indulgence here in Namma Bengaluru, one looks forward to a good baale ele oota, a meal that is served on a banana leaf. And a popular one at that is the 20-dish special lunch served at the Gandhi Bazaar, Basavanagudi outpost of Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan, a vegetarian eatery that first opened doors in 1926. In this episode, I not only savour this special lunch but also step into their kitchen to catch the making of a steamed ‘kadubu’ and the South Canara style rasam, known as the Tilli Saaru, by Ganesh, their ‘adige bhatru’, or chief cook, who has been cooking here for over 40 years. There is something truly auspicious about eating off a banana leaf. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Special Banana Leaf Lunch
This is an indulgent lunch affair representative of the flavours of the Udupi-Kundapura region in most of the 20-dishes that make for a typical baale ele oota offering here. The food is served hot and fresh, and conveys a wholesomeness that is pleasing and satisfying. One begins with a traditional grape juice and mosaru vade, menasinkai bhajji, kosambari, kadubu-chutney, couple of coconut-rich vegetables before proceeding to the substantial mains of poori-saagu, anna (rice) served with tilli saaru and sambar. Servings are unlimited, and the servers are quick and efficient in dispensing refills. Make sure you save space for the desserts, a payasa and hollige, before you close with curd rice, banana and beeda, in true South Canara style.

Say the word, ‘Pabba’s’ to anyone in Mangalore, or someone who has had the opportunity to visit this port city, and one is most likely to be met with a smile or in the very least, warming thoughts of wistfulness. For very few, if at all any, in Kudla may have escaped to the alluring charm of the gadbad, tiramisu, parfait, bella candy and scores of other delicious ice cream creations concocted by S. Prabhakar Kamath, affectionately known as Pabba to family and friends, over half a century at his now iconic Mangalorean institution, Pabba’s and Ideal Ice Creams. On my visit to kudla nearly a couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to sit with him (after nearly 20 years), his son, Mukund, and grandson, Mohith, to taste their latest creation, the I. Thali, a tantalising ice cream take on the South Indian thali, at their newest parlour, Pabba’s Ideal Café, Bharath Mall, that seems to have taken Mangalore by storm going by the sheer numbers that queue outside this large restaurant. However little did I know then, that this would be my last meeting with him! This episode was conceived as a review of the I Thali, but is now in some ways a tribute to the man who put Mangalore and his legendary ice creams on the culinary map.
