VADUZ, LIECHTENSTEIN: I made it to one of Europe’s smallest countries where I took a tour on the city train, walked to Switzerland via the Old Rhine Bridge & enjoyed the epic views from Vaduz Castle.

Some of the microstates of Europe are a challenge to get to and Liechtenstein is no exception. It doesn’t have an international airport so to get there you’ve got to travel across its land border through either Austria or Switzerland. As it happens I was visiting Zurich just a couple of hours away and sensed an opportunity. Determined to grab it with both hands I caught a train to Sargans and then a LIEmobil bus onto Liechtenstein’s capital Vaduz.
I arrived just in time to join a City Train tour around some of the city’s most recognisable attractions. These included Liechtenstein’s government headquarters (Regierungsgebäude des Fürstentums Liechtenstein), the Rheinpark Stadium (home of FC Vaduz & the national team) and the charming Red House (Das Rote Haus).
After the tour I checked into the Hotel Landhaus am Giessen and walked across a wooden footbridge called the Old Rhine Bridge (Alte Rheinbrücke) that connects Liechtenstein to Switzerland. In fact the exact border marking post can be found half way across it.
Back in Liechtenstein I sat and listened to some street performers playing the Alphorn - a traditional musical instrument popular in the region, and then headed up towards Vaduz Castle positioned romantically on the mountainside and overlooking the entire city.
My day in Vaduz concluded with a walk around the city centre in search of life. Spoiler alert: I didn’t find any! Everything was closed and I got the distinct impression all the day tourists had left and all the locals had gone home. Still, all in all an enjoyable day in Vaduz, Liechtenstein.

Vaduz, Liechtenstein in 3 minutes - Travel Cubed [4K]
Vaduz - is the capital of Liechtenstein and also the seat of the national parliament. The city, which is located along the Rhine River, has 5,696 residents. The most prominent landmark of Vaduz is Vaduz Castle, being perched atop a steep hill in the middle of the city. It is home to the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein and the Liechtenstein princely family. The city's distinctive architecture is also displayed in landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Florin, Government House, City Hall, the National Art Gallery, as well as the National Museum. Although Vaduz is the best-known town in the principality internationally, it is not the largest; neighboring Schaan has a larger population.

The beautiful small principality in the heart of Europe.
The Principality of Liechtenstein is the sixth-smallest country in the world. It lies in the heart of the Alps between Switzerland and Austria. A pipsqueak of a country, Liechtenstein snuggles between Switzerland and Austria, among mountain ranges that rise steep and rugged above the Rhine. Besides the sheer novelty value of visiting one of the world's tiniest and richest countries, Liechtenstein is pure fairy-tale stuff – a mountain principality governed by an iron-willed monarch, embedded deep in the Alps and crowned by turreted castles.
Only 25km long by 12km wide (at its broadest point), Liechtenstein doesn’t have an international airport, and access from Switzerland or Austria is by local bus. The western, more populated side of the country is in the Rhine Valley and relatively flat; the east is mountainous.
Outdoor enthusiasts are in their element here, with a remarkable number of trails to hike and slopes to ski given the country's size. Strike out into the Alpine wilderness beyond Vaduz and, suddenly, this landlocked sliver of a micronation no longer seems quite so small.

Das Fürstentum Liechtenstein liegt in der Ostschweiz am Rhein an der Grenze zu Österreich. Wir machen einen Rundgang durch den Hauptort Vaduz. Wir starten an der Kathedrale St. Florin und gehen über den Platz Städtle zum Liechtensteinischen Landesmuseum. Von dort geht es geradeaus weiter bis zum zentralen Kreisverkehr am Restaurant Adler in Vaduz. Von dort geht es über die Hauptverkehrsstraße 28 zurück zum Ausgangspunkt der Sightseeing Tour. Bei der Kathedrale gibt es einen großzügigen Parkplatz und die erste Stunde Parkzeit ist kostenlos.

Vaduz Drone Flight: Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, sits on the Rhine River near the Swiss border. On a hillside overlooking the town, Vaduz Castle dates back to the 12th century and is a royal family residence. Citytrain Tour of Vaduz, Liechtenstein
Vaduz is the capital of the principality of Liechtenstein and the seat of the national parliament. The town, located along the Rhine, has about 5,100 inhabitants (as of 2009), most of whom are Roman Catholic. Its cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vaduz.
Vaduz is said to be mentioned in historic 12th-century manuscripts as Farduzes. It is, however, commonly believed to have been founded circa 1322 by the Counts of Werdenberg. In 1322 a mention of the castle is made, which was sacked by the Swiss in 1499 during the Swabian War. The entire town was also destroyed.
In the 17th century the Liechtenstein family was seeking a seat in the Imperial diet, the Reichstag. However, since they did not hold any territory that was directly under the Imperial throne, they were unable to meet the primary requirement to qualify.
The family yearned for the added power a seat in the Imperial government would bring, and therefore sought to acquire lands that would be Reichsunmittelbar, or held without any feudal personage other than the Holy Roman Emperor himself having rights on the land. After some time, the family was able to arrange the purchase of the minuscule Herrschaft (Lordship) of Schellenberg and countship of Vaduz (in 1699 and 1712 respectively) from the Hohenems. Tiny Schellenberg and Vaduz possessed exactly the political status required: no feudal lord other than their comital sovereign and the suzerain Emperor.
Thereby, on January 23, 1719, after purchase had been duly made, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, decreed Vaduz and Schellenberg were united, and raised to the dignity of Fürstentum (principality) with the name Liechtenstein in honour of [his] true servant, Anton Florian of Liechtenstein. It is on this date that Liechtenstein became a sovereign member state of the Holy Roman Empire. As a testament to the pure political expediency of the purchases, the Princes of Liechtenstein did not set foot in their new principality for over 120 years.
The most prominent landmark of Vaduz is Vaduz Castle, the home of the reigning prince of Liechtenstein and the Liechtenstein princely family. The castle is visible from almost any location in Vaduz, being perched atop a steep hill in the middle of the city. The Cathedral of St. Florin, Government House and City Hall are also well-known landmarks, displaying the various styles and periods of architecture that the city is known for.

1:03 - The Red House: a gabled stairs structure with a large tower containing living quarters, is located in the Mitteldorf area of Vaduz.The house gets its name from the dark-red colour the building has had since the middle of the 19th century. Documents show that work began on another construction on the same site several centuries earlier, before being abandoned in the 15th century. The Red House's many owners over the years include the St. Johann Monastery. Since 1807 the building has been in the possession of the Rheinberger family. Egon Rheinberger - a famous painter, sculptor and architect from Liechtenstein - extended the Red House between 1902 and 1905.
