Day In Riyadh (We Expected Skyscrapers and Got Something Else) الرياض
I heard many people say that Riyadh is boring. Just another middle eastern hypermodern crazy megacity with a lot of skyscrapers and no soul at all.
But is it true?
We took an hour long flight from Medina and ended up at the Riyadh International Airport (which is an experience on its own... The Airport is huge and running around the kilometer long building and trying to locate the car rental office is something I will remember for a long time.
But then we finally made it out and started to explore Riyadh.
And what a treat it was. We explored the ancient archeological site of Diriyah and At-Turaif which honestly is a lot more fun than I expected (I crashed a horse :D ).
Then we moved along to the Al Masmak Palace and Alsafat square (also known Chop-Chop Square - guess why).
And don worry, we also got a glimpse of downtown Riyadh and its most famous landmark - the Kingdom Center.

Deera Square (Arabic: ساحة الديرة) is a public space in Deera, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is also known as Justice Square and derisively as Chop Chop Square by Western visitors. It is a former site of public executions, where those sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia were publicly beheaded.
At unannounced times, Saudi security forces and other officials cleared the area to make way for the execution to take place. After the beheading of the condemned, the head is stitched to the body, which is wrapped up and taken away for the final rites. It is a crime to record, with photos or videos, the executions, despite the number of attendees witnessing such public events.
Them days are gone and Riyadh has created a cultural exhibition in the centre of the square which teaches visitors about the history and culture of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The exhibition was extremely interesting and I found out a lot about the dress and history of Saudi Arabia.

A vast clay and mud-brick citadel that witnessed the birth of a kingdom, Al Masmak — the word means a high, strong, and thick building — serves as a proud reminder of Saudi Arabia’s storied history. In 1902, King Abdulaziz captured the fortress and took control of Riyadh (his ancestral home) after having lived in exile in Kuwait. From this fortress, Abdulaziz Al Saud conquered and united the different kingdoms and provinces that make up the Saudi nation as we know it today.
Built-in 1865, the fortress has served many purposes. Although originally used to house the garrisons who protected the city, it later was an ammunition warehouse after the raid by King Abdulaziz and, later still, a prison

Deera Square (Arabic: ساحة الديرة), also known as Justice Square (Arabic: ميدان العدل) or Safa Square (Arabic: ساحة الصفاة)and infamously as Chop-Chop Square, is a public space in the ad-Dirah neighborhood of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, located adjacent to the al-Hukm Palace compound and Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque in the Qasr al-Hukm District. It is known as the historic site of public executions, where those sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia are publicly beheaded.
Saudi Arabia remains the only country with legal capital punishment by decapitation (beheading) in 2022, recorded executions in Saudi Arabia reached 196, the highest number recorded in the country in 30 years –, but beheading are no longer carried out in public, with no public executions having been recorded in the country in 2022.
In 2015, it was reported that filming the public beheadings in Saudi Arabia had been forbidden. There was speculation that this was due to the international repercussion of public beheadings then carried out by the Islamic State.
