Chios is the capital of the province and has about 25,000 inhabitants. The city is a bustling port and commercial center. In the center of town stands the Byzantine museum with a variety of historical artifacts from the island's past. Modern Chios has been built on the site of the ancient city from which there exist a few survived findings – in particular the walls and the theater. The Castle is quite impressive. Originally built by the Byzantines as a fortress, it was significantly extended by the Genovese in the 14th century.

Emporios (Vault), is a semicircular cove stretching 6 km from Pyrgi on the island of Chios. Emporio was excavated by the British Archaeological School in Athens in 1953. The excavations revealed a city that had been founded, as noted recently in the last centuries of the Modern era and began to flourish with the oldest civilizations of Troy. The Mavra Volia beach or black sand is covered with black pebbles, which have come from the lava of the now dormant volcano Psaronas.

The village of Vrontados is known for its significant maritime tradition. It is situated 4 km north of Chios Town, on the western coast of the island. The windmills of the village, the churches of Agios Stefanos, Panagia Erithiani and Saint Mark, and the tomb of the Greek writer, Yannis Psycharis, are worth a visit. The Monastery of Saint Stefan lies on the top of the hill in a verdant surrounding, and is ideal for those seeking fresh air and relaxation. Accommodation, cafes, bars and taverns are available at Vrodados, as well as some beautiful beaches.

Mesta is the most remote of the medieval villages, but also the most well-preserved. The appearance of the village and its architecture is unique in Greece. The houses are built side by side without gaps, leaving only two gate entrances to the village. The streets are narrow and most are covered with arches upon which houses are built. The whole village has been designed and built as a maze in order to prevent pirates from easily reaching the center of the village where the most important buildings are located. The oldest monument of Mesta is the church of the Old Taxiarch.

Pitios is located in north central Chios, among pine forests (after which it was named). There is a recently restored Medieval tower at the top of the village, with Agios Dimitrios church right next to it. The buildings and houses are built of stone, and the streets are narrow with arches. There are many beautiful churches in this mountain village, as well as restaurants and cafes. There are festivals in Pitios on the 14th and 15th of August.

Pyrgi lies 25 km from the city of Chios, is one of the villages maintained as it was built. Features that make the village unique are the narrow streets, numerous churches and the 13th century Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles. Pyrgi has become a preserved monument. The houses are tightly bound to each other to form a compact structure, built that way as protection from the frequent raids by pirates and the Turks. Residents could enter and leave the village only through a door which is currently located at Kato Porta (Lower Door).

Located 16 kilometers from the city of Chios, on a rocky hill is the picturesque village of Avgonyma. The houses are built of stone and there are very few local residents. During the sunset, the view of the Aegean Sea and Psara, the medieval observatory location and the clean beach at Elinda provide unique images for travelers.

Anavatos is an imposing medieval village, located in the center of the island of Chios. It lies 20 km from the town of Chios and is built at an altitude of 400 meters on a hill with steep slopes. Most of the residents of Anavatos were massacred in 1822 by the Turks, and the great earthquake of 1881 brought significant damage to the buildings. The village is now almost deserted, with few permanent residents in the winter. Near the only gate in the wall is an imposing building, called the three-storey. In the summer, Anavatos is ideal for walks in the picturesque cobblestone streets or for coffee and food in the village square.
