China Tourism - Ancient Fenghuang town

Ancient Fenghuang, a village in central China, used to be a frontier town, separating the Han civilization from the Miao and Dong minorities. It was an important regional center for trade and cultural exchange.

The riverside setting of the village, with its wooden stilt houses and narrow mysterious back alleys, makes it one of the most attractive places in the region.

These days, it has become a major tourist destination. While some traditions remain, much of the town has been set up to cater for the influx of new visitors, in some ways changing the face of the village beyond recognition.

Either way, Fenghuang provides an interesting glimpse of the many challenges and contrasts that exist in China today.

Fenghuang (Phoenix) Ancient Town, Most Beautiful Town in China | 4K HDR

Two years ago, I made my first video in the ancient city of Phoenix:

Two years later, I came to this beautiful ancient city again and recorded a new video from a different perspective.
Hope you enjoy this special edition of Fenghuang old town.

--------------------⭐⭐
Fenghuang Ancient Town Facts
---------------------⭐⭐
Situated in Hunan province, Fenghuang Ancient Town is one of the most famous old towns in China.

You can appreciate the antique flavor of this 300-year old town, feel the rich culture of the 28 minority ethnic groups, and explore the remaining traces of the famous historical figures and great writers.

Type: Ancient Town, Historical & Cultural Site, Ethnic Minority Place

Best Seasons: All Seasons

Recommended Visiting Time: 1-2 days

Opening Hours: all day long
--------------------⭐⭐
Why Visit Fenghuang Ancient Town?
--------------------⭐⭐
Located in the southwest of Tujia-miao Autonomous Prefecture of Xiangxi in Hunan province, Fenghuang Ancient Town or Phoenix Ancient Town is reputed as “the most beautiful town in China” and “Town in a Picture”.

Built in 1704, this old town was given the title of the “National AAAA Tourist Attraction” for its charming scenery of multiple ancient sites of towers, brides, streets, and other buildings as well as the rich culture of Miao, Tujia and other 26 minority ethnic groups.

You may be attracted by the simple but charming customs which are written in The Border Town to come to visit the place. But once you get here, you will find her charm is not limited to this. You can stroll on the bluestone paved lanes after the rain; take a boat to cruise on the Tuojiang River and appreciate the 100-year-old stilted building; climb on the ancient gate towers of the city and feel all the vicissitudes of the ancient city; watch the old woman washing clothes on the river banks calmly; or sit alone near the window in a coffee bar silently enjoying the exquisite scenery and letting your thoughts drift...... These may be the secrets of the charms of the ancient town.

It used to be a gathering place for politicians, warlords, chieftains, Miao minorities and bandits, which can be considered as a standard barbarian place.

Visiting this about 10 square kilometers wide ancient town, you will love it immediately and discover the mystery of its profound culture.

The ancient town of Fenghuang also means the Phoenix Town in China; it was described as the most beautiful town in China by the Zelanian writer Louis Aileen. The town is the only path between Huahua, Jishou (Hunan province) and Tongren (Guizhou province) and a must-visit place to enjoy the real amorous feelings of the west part of Hunan province.

The town is very small with only a main street; however, it is a green corridor and charming place. It is located on the river bank of Tuojiang River (Tuojiang, 沱江), the small town was once the rallying point for politicos, warlords, bandits, and the local Miao minority people, we should say it was once a standard barbarian land.

--------------------⭐⭐

Ranking as the top ancient town in China, Fenghuang Ancient Town is a guidebook for people to know the past life in the pre-modernization period.

The wooden houses and stone roads are the typical scenes here. When sightseeing in this town in a misty day, you will really find why it is so famous and popular all the time. The scenery after rain or in the misty morning is more like a Chinese traditional painting rather than a real world.

--------------------⭐⭐
Fenghuang Ancient Town, aka Phoenix Ancient Town and Feng Huang Gu Cheng in Chinese, is situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province in an area of outstanding natural beauty where mountains, water and blue skies prevail. 'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames.

Fenghuang Ancient Town is so called as legend has it that two of these fabulous birds flew over it and found the Fenghuang Town so beautiful that they hovered there, reluctant to leave.

To donate to this channel, please use the link below, thank you.

Fenghuang County (simplified Chinese: 凤凰县; traditional Chinese: 鳳凰縣; pinyin: Fènghuáng Xiàn; literally: phoenix county) is under the administration of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan province, China, bordering the prefecture-level cities of Huaihua to the southeast and Tongren (Guizhou) to the west. It has an exceptionally well-preserved ancient town that harbors unique ethnic languages, customs, arts as well as many distinctive architectural remains of Ming and Qing styles. The town is placed in a mountain setting, incorporating the natural flow of water into city layout. Over half of the city's population belong to the Miao or Tujia minorities. It was the centre of the unsuccessful Miao Rebellion (1854–73), which created a Miao diaspora in Southeast Asia during the last two centuries. The city is revered in Miao traditions and funeral rites and is the location of the Southern China Great Wall (中国南方长城; 中國南方長城; Zhōngguó Nánfāng Chángchéng; Miao: Suav Tuam Choj), a fortification built by the Ming dynasty to protect the local Han Chinese from Miao attacks. The Town Hanging On The Waterfall, Furong Ancient Town | Hunan, China | 4K HDR | 芙蓉镇

Furong Ancient Town: The Magical Waterfall Village of Hunan, China
--------------------------
A short bus ride away from Zhangjiajie you’ll find a beautiful little village that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting.

Welcome to the Furong Ancient Town.

Waterfalls? Caves? Traditional Chinese architecture? How about all three in the same scene? Furong Ancient Town, located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, is undoubtedly one of China’s most unique historical towns. For whatever reason, though, it’s often overlooked by tourists – both international and domestic.

And that’s all the more reason to come see Furong’s fairytale-like scenery for yourself.

Formerly known as Wangcun, the town has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its population is largely comprised of Tujia people, China’s eighth largest ethnic minority. As such, a visit to Furong is also a great opportunity to learn about Tujia customs, architecture and folk beliefs.

Furong Ancient Town is more than 2000 years old and home to the Tujia minority people. Located in the Hunan Province between the Avatar Mountains in Zhangjiajie and the Ancient Phoenix Village of Fenghuang, Furong is one of those villages in China that keeps the charm of older times and remains a largely unknown treasure.

Once you get a glimpse of the waterfalls and beautiful mountain scenery you’ll wonder why it’s not more popular!

Spend the night here if you can! It’s stunning at night and there are lots of hotels nearby the waterfalls.
--------------------------
Halfway between the popular tourist destinations of Fenghuang County and Zhangjiajie in central China's Hunan Province lies a small town that has been standing there for over 2,000 years.

People usually call an ancient town hanging on the waterfall.

Furong Town is also known as Hibiscus Town. As its nickname suggests, the most impressive sight here is the 40-meter-wide and 60-meter-high waterfall as well as the ancient buildings constructed above the cliff, a scene rarely seen in the cities. Visitors can even hear the soothing waterfall sound from 10 miles away.
--------------------------

Location: Yongshun County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (western part of Hunan province)
Best season to visit Furong Ancient Town: all year round
--------------------------

Formerly known as Wang Village, Furong Ancient Town has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is called the Ancient Town Hanging on the Waterfall because of the magnificent waterfall passing through the town. The movie Hibiscus Town, starring well-known actress Liu Xiaoqing and actor Jiang Wen, was shot here.

Furong Ancient Town is not only a place with a long history, but also a tourist resort that combines natural scenery with primitive ethnic customs. Surrounded by green mountains and clear water, the town is full of winding alleys, the Tujia stilted wooden houses, and streets paved with flagstones, which reflect simple folk customs of the local Tujia people.
--------------------------
Furong Waterfall:
--------------------------
the waterfall is the premier natural beauty and a must-see in Furong Ancient Town. Furong town is surrounded by water on three sides, the magnificent waterfall passes through the town. This is the largest and most spectacular waterfall in western Hunan province, with a height of 60 meters and a width of 40 meters. The two levels of water pour down from cliff, and the momentum is quite huge.

The two-thousand-year old ancient town is also an attraction that integrates natural scenery with primitive simplicity. In addition, it is the portal to the Mengdong River Scenic Area, a charming place of karst landforms.

As is described in the novel ‘Furong Town’, by Chen Yunhe, the pack basket is swinging on the back of the girl who speaks a Xiangxi dialect, and the life in the Mengdong River Scenic Area has many tales to tell. Located deeply in the mountains and waters, zigzag lanes can be even found in the downtown area.

Houses built on stilts are on the waterside. Green flagstones pave the five-mile street. Tourists find the place unforgettable.

At the entrance of the waterfall, there is a rock cave – the relic site of early Tujia people who arrived here to escape the war. Though the cave is now much eroded by water, visitors are still amazed by how big the cave was to hold thousands of people back then.
-------------------------------
WHO ARE THE TUJIA?
-------------------------------
The Tujia, China’s eighth largest ethnic minority, is a group consisting of around 8 million people. They can be found in Hunan as well as neighboring provinces like Hubei and Guizhou.

Fenghuang: An Ancient Chinese City Destroyed by Tourism

Read more at Fenghuang is a county in western Hunan province of China that was a virtual backwater up until 2001 when the management rights of ten tourist sites -- including the old city of Fenghuang -- were purchased by the Yellow Dragon Cave Corporation. They have since turned the place into the epitome of unchecked tourism exploitation, extracting most of the profits out of the area. Whether this good or bad is debatable, this video just intends to show just how rampant tourism has become there.

A Warm Welcome to Ancient Fenghuang (Phoenix Town), China

Not happy about the rat in the dinner restaurant last night, Travels With Sheila's spirits perked up the minute we stepped foot into Ancient Fenghuang. The word Fenghuang in Chinese means Phoenix. A big square with a bronze phoenix in the center and throngs of Chinese and Korean groups running to and fro, paying 10 Yuan to dress in a Miao outfit and pose for photos.

In seconds, ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I were mobbed by groups of high school students who were very excited about our foreign appearance (hope that was a good thing) and wanted to take pictures with us and ask questions. Most Chinese have never seen or met a foreigner and only know what they see on television or in the movies. Such fun and the interaction is priceless....
