The 34-mile-long Zhuhai-Macau bridge opens in Hong Kong

The world's longest sea-crossing bridge connecting Hong Kong and Macau to Zhuhai, south-east China is set to finally open this week, nine years after construction began. The much anticipated Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will open to traffic on Wednesday 9am local time. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend an opening ceremony on Tuesday in Zhuhai. Construction started in 2009 on the 55-kilometre (34-mile) crossing, which includes a snaking road bridge and underwater tunnel, linking Hong Kong's Lantau island to the southern mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. Stretching across 55 kilometres (34 miles), it is 14 miles longer than the width of the English Channel from Dover in the United Kingdom to Calais in France.

China's longest underwater highway tunnel opens the Taihu tunnel

After nearly four years of construction, China's longest underwater highway tunnel is now open to vehicle traffic.

At a length of 10.79 kilometers (6.65 miles), the Taihu tunnel stretches under Lake Taihu in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, about 50 kilometers east of Shanghai.

According to government officials in Jiangsu, the tunnel was built at a cost 9.9 billion yuan (about $1.56 billion). Construction began on January 9, 2018.

Over 2 million cubic meters of concrete were used to build the two-way tunnel, which has six lanes and is 17.45 meters wide, reports China's official news agency, Xinhua.

The ceiling of the tunnel has been outfitted with colorful LED lights, designed to prevent driver fatigue.

The tunnel is part of the 43.9-kilometer Changzhou-Wuxi Highway, which opened to the public on December 30, 2021. It provides an alternative expressway for travelers journeying between Shanghai and Nanjing, Jiangsu's capital.

Connecting the expressways of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou, it was built to alleviate traffic pressure on the cities next to Lake Taihu while promoting the economic development of the cities in Yangtze River Delta area.

So how does the Taihu tunnel stack up against its global counterparts? The world's longest underway highway tunnel is Norway's 14.3-kilometer twin-road Ryfast tunnel, which runs between the city of Stavanger and the municipality of Strand.

The underwater tunnel portion of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a vehicle highway that travels under Tokyo Bay, is 9.6 kilometers.

In terms of underwater tunnels in general, though, the top honor goes to the Channel Tunnel, which connects England and France by rail. Its submerged portion runs for 37.9 kilometers, the longest of any underwater tunnel in the world.

President Xi announces opening of Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

China's President Xi Jinping officially launched the world's longest sea bridge connecting Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China today. The 55-kilometre (34-mile) crossing, which includes a snaking road bridge and underwater tunnel, will open to traffic tomorrow at 9am local time, linking Hong Kong with the southern mainland city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. The 40-metre-deep submerged tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is connected by two artificial islands, creating a gap in the bridge that will allow cargo ships to pass through the busy delta. Xi presided over an inauguration ceremony attended by Hong Kong's and Macau's city leaders at a new port terminal in Zhuhai.

China is opening the world’s longest sea bridge

China is opening the worlds longest sea bridge
Fifteen years ago, China began working on an ambitious project that will ultimately become the world's longest sea bridge ever built. Now this bridge, which connects the mainland with both special administrative regions of the country, Hong Kong and Macau, is finally ready. After the opening ceremony in the mainland city of Zhuhai, chaired by Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Tuesday (October 23) with a firework, the bridge will open for traffic at 9:00 on Wednesday.

55 kilometers (34.2 miles) in length — one part of the sea crossing shorter — is part of Beijing’s efforts to unify Hong Kong, Macau and the southern part of the mainland into the so-called Big Bay to compete with San Francisco Bay as a technical center. The project follows the logic that China has used for many years to guide economic development - if you want to get rich, pave the way first

World's longest sea crossing: Hong Kong-Zhuhai bridge opens

Chinese President Xi Jinping has officially opened the world's longest sea crossing bridge, nine years after construction first began.

Including its access roads, the bridge spans 55km (34 miles) and connects Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.

The bridge has cost about $20bn (£15.3bn) and seen several delays.

Construction has been dogged by safety issues - at least 18 workers have died on the project, officials say.

Mr Xi attended the opening ceremony of the bridge, which took place in Zhuhai, along with the leaders of Hong Kong and Macau.

The bridge will open to regular traffic on Wednesday.

#China is opening the world’s longest sea bridge — and it contains enough steel to build 60 Eiffel Towers

*-Called the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the project is expected to cut travel time in half.
*-Commuters will be able to travel across the Pearl River Estuary from Macau to Hong Kong in about an hour.
*-The bridge features six lanes and four tunnels, one of which is underwater.
*-China also built four artificial islands to support the structure
*-Touted as an engineering wonder, the bridge is made of 420,000 tons of steel — enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers.
*-Some 40,000 vehicles are expected to use the bridge daily, including shuttle buses running at 10-minute intervals.
*-Pedestrians will not be able to cross the bridge, nor will bicyclists; it's just for cars.
*-Officials say the bridge will be up and running for 120 years.
*-The price is unclear; local outlets report its construction will cost $15 billion.
*-The project has faced controversy because of its expensive price, construction delays, alleged corruption, and worker-safety concerns. Two workers died and 19 more were charged with faking concrete-test reports.
*-Construction lasted seven years. The 2012 photo below shows artificial islands China built for the bridge near Lantau Island, in Hong Kong.
*-China is already home to (now the second) longest sea bridge, which spans 26.3 miles. Completed in 2011, the $1.5 billion structure links the eastern coastal city of Qingdao to the suburb of Huangdao.
*-The new bridge is one of two big transportation projects that will open in the region this year. By 2019, China's high-speed rail system is set to grow by 2,180 miles.

China Unveils World’s Longest Sea Bridge

The world’s longest sea bridge has officially opened to traffic, connecting Hong Kong and Macau to the Chinese mainland. The 34-mile (55-kilometer) “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge” features a range of unusual features, with The Guardian reporting “cameras to detect yawning, drivers forced to wear heart monitors and access restricted to the political elite and charity donors.”

Opened by Chinese president Xi Jinping, the $20billion bridge was constructed of 400,000 tonnes of steel, the equivalent of 60 Eiffel Towers. The bridge has been designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons of up to 340 kilometers per hour.

The span between Hong Kong, Macau, and the Chinese mainland is composed of three elements, with a main 30-kilometer span from the mainland landing on an artificial island. The land then linked to a sister island via a 7-kilometer-long, 44-meter-deep tunnel, which allows for shipping to continue.

The tunnel meets a further link bridge to Hong Kong via the International Airport and a border crossing, where cars switch from the right-hand side of the road (typical on the Chinese mainland) to the left-hand side (typical in Hong Kong) at a specifically-built “merge point.”

Save this picture!
As drivers cross the bridge, heart rate and blood pressure is monitored, with information sent to the bridge’s control center. As reported by The Guardian, if a driver yawns three or more times in 20 seconds, a “yawn cam” will the raise an alert.

The bridge is not just a mega transport infrastructure jointly built by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. The collaboration between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao in terms of trade, finance, logistics and tourism will be strengthened. Hong Kong will assume a more proactive role in the development of the Greater Bay Area.
-Frank Chan Fan, Secretary and Transport and Housing, Hong Kong

Although hailed as a feat of engineering, the bridge has not been without criticism. People from Hong Kong will require special permits to use the bridge, despite the project being part-funded by Hong Kong taxpayers, as reported by the South China Morning Post. Meanwhile, environmental groups such as the WWF have raised concerns over the bridge’s impact and potential harm to the critically rare Chinese white dolphin.

China also holds the record for the world's highest bridge, which was opened to traffic in the southwest of the country in 2016.
