Feminism – The Global View

Gender equality and feminism have become increasingly central to the discourses shaping contemporary culture. This panel examines the impact of two major traveling exhibitions related to the topic: ‘Radical Women’, originated by the Hammer Museum, LA; and ‘We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85’, originated by the California African American Museum, LA. Both shows have been on view in multiple institutions worldwide and have received a great amount of media coverage. But how have these exhibitions affected individuals from the communities of the various locations they took place, and has their impact led to any positive developments?

Val McDermid & Jo Sharp: Shaping a Better Future

At last year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival, bestselling author Val McDermid and professor of geography Jo Sharp were inspired by the festival theme, We Need New Stories. So inspired, in fact, that they turned to a loveable rogues gallery of Scottish cultural folk to submit a piece of writing about their dreams for a better future. Imagine A Country is the resulting book edited by McDermid and Sharp: fascinating, eclectic and inspiring. In this 2020 Edinburgh International Book Festival Online event, Val McDermid and Jo Sharp get together to host acclaimed Scottish writers Doug Johnstone, Jo Clifford and Leila Aboulela, who read their contributions and discuss how we might create a better future for the greatest number of people.

Lola Olufemi & Minna Salami: Critical Reflections on Feminism

Since 2010, the award-winning blog MsAfropolitan has connected feminism with critical reflections on contemporary culture from an Africa-centred perspective. Its founder is Nigerian-Finnish writer and lecturer Minna Salami, a powerhouse of feminist thinking and organising whose first book of essays is Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone. Salami joins this event with writer and activist Lola Olufemi, author of Feminism, Interrupted. Olufemi is an organiser with the London Feminist Library and co-founder of FLY, Cambridge University’s network for women and non-binary people of colour.
The two writers appear in conversation with feminist historian Jade Bentil, for a discussion on the big ideas around empowerment, inclusion and activism and how (in Salami’s words) ‘we see ourselves, our history, and our world’.

Guide to Getting Lost

“Not to find one's way in a city means little…But to lose one- self in a city as one loses oneself in a forest requires practice…Then the street names must call out to the lost wanderer like the snap- ping of dry twigs, and the small streets of the city-centre must reflect the time of day as clearly as the mountain hollow.”

About ????????????????????????????????????????????
Our mission is to work with the most in-demand and interesting speakers in Europe and send them to companies and conferences from Lisbon to Istanbul. The ambition remains the same, though our geographical reach has expanded.

We were founded in 2005 in London as a Professional Speakers Agency by Jonathan Curran who leads the business today. Jonathan started the speaker’s agency to inspire the motivational speaking career of a close friend who had suffered significant adversity. Using his own network he has built Promotivate into Europe’s leading speakers agency specialising in motivational speakers.

That close friend, Mark Pollock has continued to inspire organisations around the world with his incredible story. Find out more about our motivational speakers and who they are.

Today Promotivate represents the cream of Europe’s conference speakers who appear daily at conferences and inspire organisations wherever they appear. We have expanded into Latin America with an office in Lima, Peru and our main European office is located in Barcelona with London covering the UK and Ireland.

The agency is renowned for managing fresh speakers who have cutting-edge ideas. Meticulous planning, great service, and fair pricing enable Promotivate’s clients to get who they need on time and ensure their corporate objectives are communicated effectively.
